Albacore
I was just wondering is anyone knew if magnets existed in the world of Mistborn. Certain allomantic powers certainly appear to be magnetic or at least parallel to magnetism in nature, but do magnets or "lodestones" exist in the world?

Magnetism is a pretty fundamental phenomenon. In fact I'm pretty sure the ash is somewhat ferro-magnetic in that it that it interacts with Scadrial's magnetic field. Oudeis he/him
I've been searching but I cannot find the WoB... I know I've read somewhere that all compasses point to Kredik Shaw, which is magnetic north on Scadrial, and that the Lord Ruler uses that as more proof of his own divinity. If compasses exist, perforce magnets must.

It's in the annotations, which haven't entirely been added to the interview database (I should get back on that).
Oudeis he/him
How many years until I remember to start checking the annotations when I can't find a quote I know I remember?
Guest
How many years until I remember to start checking the annotations when I can't find a quote I know I remember? I had the exact same reaction. Edited January 15, 2015 by inexorablePanda

Cam
Since electricity is a thing in Alloy of Law, they probably have magnets.
skaa he/him
Wax talks about magnetic metals and their alloys in Alloy of Law: Alloys are remarkable things, Lady Marasi. Did you realize you can make an alloy with a metal that reacts to magnetism, but end up with one that doesn’t? Mix it with an equal part of something else, and you don’t get something that’s half as magnetically reactive—you get something that’s not reactive at all. When you make an alloy, you don’t just mix two metals. You make a new one. Edited January 17, 2015 by skaa
Dunkum he/him
Wax talks about magnetic metals and their alloys in Alloy of Law: I thought I remembered that happening, but was worried it was just something from a WoB or annotation or something, comparing the magnetic/nonmagnetic alloys to alloys of aluminum. natc
They kind of have to exist. Physics is largely identical to real life save for when investiture is mucking up the works with its awesomeness, and the elements are the same. Quotes and annotations aside there is no logical reason magnets don't exist, especially on a planet abundant in metal.
