I personally think that was incredibly clever. Don't be a spoil-sport.

I like that people latched onto my theory so well about him being bonded to a Sorenson well!

As for the mother, what if she was part of the people who followed The Diagram? That would make sense as to why she would want to kill Shallan.

It's been talked about before on the threads. King Taravangian mentions the brother training Shallan Mraize hints he's a Skybreaker, which would imply a spren bond anyways.

I feel like we should start a betting pool as to which Rosharan faction Shallan's mother was a part of.

It would be interesting if she was a member of a group totally opposed to the Ghostbloods, and she and her husband both thought they were manipulating the other.

Lin Davar only became a Ghostblood just at the end, didn't he? When he took on Luesh as Steward? Years after his wife stopped being a member of any organization, up to and including "united brotherhood of living people."

I don't know. I'm not up on my Davar family. Could be though.

Anyway, that wasn't a serious remark.

Just to add to this discussion.

From TWoK, Ch.2, towards the end, when Helaran attacks Kaladin's squad, Cenn, lying on the ground sees him coming towards him

Galloping directly toward them was a massive black horse bearing a rider in gleaming armor that seemed to radiate light.

My opinion is that Helaran was not a proto-Radiant, because of the evidence of his killing indiscriminantly (as described in Kaladin's flashback in TWoK - nonchalant was the word), but he may have had a spren/nahel bond. Not all people with a Nahel bond have to be on their way to Radiant status.

We still don't know what happened to spren that had bonded people pre-radiant times when the person died/was killed. Remember, as per WoB (which i can't locate at the moment), spren chose to resemble honorblades from the beginning, where as Ishar only put his restrictions on the nahel bond a few desolations after spren had started bonding humans.

The question is, are all spren still bound by what Ishar had done, or can they choose to disobey and create nahel bonds without adhering to the Radiant oaths?

I'm inclined to think that Cenn, being inexperienced and naive, just perceived Helaran's armor that way. Brandon is a fan of keeping viewpoints true to themselves.

I hope so. Shallan seems to have put him on a pedestal but i'll always remember him as slaughtering Kals team. ~call me bias

I asked Brandon what would happen to a spren if it's bonded died at the WoR Chicago signing. He said it would be an emotionally traumatizing event, but not shattering. I then asked if that meant Helaran wasn't a surgebinder, and he asked why I said that. I mentioned the gem on Helaran's blade being a hint, and he said it was a huge hint. I took that to mean if Helaran had been bonding a spren, it wasn't at the point he could manifest it as a shardblade.

Is there a way to force Spren to bond? The Parshendi used to hum/sing to attract the right spren to change their form during a Highstorm but now they capture the Spren in Gem Stones. Do you think the Son's of Honor or the Ghostbloods are going to make a type of Surgebinder?

During the highstorm, the writing seemed to imply that the spren was the one forcing the form upon Eshonai.

That says to me that there is choice involved for both parties.

I'm going to try to find WoB on this.
