**** To sign up for The Great Reread, just go here! ****

To keep things nice and orderly, I decided we should have separate threads for the sign-up, for the discussion, and for individual book discussion, just so things don't get too confusing. Too keep things from getting too cluttered, please keep all posts relating to your reread in one of these threads, preferably the thread it belongs in.

This thread, as you may have guessed, is specifically for discussion pertaining to the reread. Any thoughts, decisions, insights, revelations, questions, debates, idle speculation, predictions, insane rambling, sane rambling, inane rambling, foretellings, dreamings, viewings, tomfoolery, Thomfoolery, Mat-love, Matt-love, or general hobnobbery is welcome here, as long as it relates to the noble endeavor of rereading the entire saga of The Wheel of Time.

This thread is intended as a spoiler-free thread. Please, for the sake of new readers who do not wish to be spoiled, put all spoilers within spoiler tags.

The individual threads, linked below, are going to be full of SPOILERS. New readers, much like General Theories, enter them at your own risk. :)

Turns out all I have to do is read 1/4 of a book a day to finish on time. Easily accomplished :D.

I should think so. :D

I should have the starting award made by this weekend at the latest. I hope everyone has had the chance to begin, or know when they might. 5 months might seem like a lot of time, but they'll go by quickly.

@Shiver: Hear hear! I'm still trying to figure out where the last almost 14 months have gone since my son was born. Feels like only a couple months, but it's been much longer than that. Makes me definetley regret my young years when I thought I had all the time in the world, but not enough to do, as to now, never having enough time and way too much to do.

I have very little clue as to how you guys do some of the things you do in your posts, like the spoiler button, and I "think" I figured out how to do the quote one, but I'll find out for sure after I post if it actually worked or not. ^_^ LOL

I hear you there, about younger years. I'm only 26, I shouldn't be feeling this old. xD

The spoiler tag is pretty easy. Take what you want to keep behind the spoiler, and in front of that type [spo iler], but without the space. At the end what you are trying to hide, type [/spo iler], again without the space. Hope that helps. :)

Some of you should come on the IRC; we have some spiffing chats about WoT quite often. Most often it's about new ways to hate Egwene but other discussions are more favourable

ATTENTION!

*grabs Oath Rod, channels Spirit*

Under the Light of Jesus Christ, I vow that I will write no word in this post that is not true.

I have finished The Great Reread, reading each book, and each chapter, page, and paragraph thereof, reading them in the correct order and in the correct timespan.

You shortened your lifespan by roughly half what it ought to be in order to make that declaration. It must have been very important to you.

Forum badges are to be taken very seriously. Wouldn't you shorten your lifespan just so that you could get one of those awesome badges?

I know I would.

Right... I should get on making those now...

You need at least three Oaths to cut the lifespan, and temporary or removed Oaths don't have that effect. This is only one and expired after I finished the post.

Putting this behind a spoiler tag, 'cause it is one.

As I can remember, there is no such thing a "temporary oath" when using a binder. The oaths are permanent unless released, which is a very painful process. Additionally, any use of a binding rod will shorten ones lifespan, although I don't know if this increases with the number of oaths sworn.

I'd have to agree. Semirhage (I believe) was thinking about not wanting to 'do something' that would stop her from torturing her patients, and that something would also shorten her life. She'd "be able to see the end of her life" or something. I don't know if it actually says oath rod or something like it, but I know for guaranteed that that's what i decided she was talking about. When she was torturing an Aes Sedai in (what I believe to be) a prologue.

Well, then what happens when an Oath is predicant on conditions that no longer exist?

An oath like, "I will no longer kill with my hands"? And then you cut your hands off?

I haven't yet started my TGR, and I know how fast I devour them, so I might wait till Octish, but as I recall the oath process was intense, settling into ones very bones.

You've still had the ter'angreal's effect you, and would still be "bound".

As I understand it, when using a binder, there is no such Oath. Anything you swear is ingrained into you completely, and only a binder can be used to undo it.

I made it to The Gathering Storm. I highly doubt that I'll be allowed to finish the books while I'm on my mission, so I guess I didn't finish on time :(.

There's at least one example of an Oath breaking when conditions changed

Verin swore to "serve the Great Lord until the hour of her death." One hour before dying, the Oath broke and she could tell Egwene everything.

On a related note, what do you think happens when an Oath requires you to do something impossible. For example, if Thevara had commanded Lina to fly, what would have happened?

As I can figure, one of two things would happen. Either a) Lina would try to fly and fail, and keep trying until Therava ordered her to stop, or B) The Oath would work on her body to force her to try/send her into fits of pain.

I could easily be wrong, though.

There was a good example of the oaths in the first scenes with the Seanchan and damane. If I remember right, one of the captured Aes Sedai was commanded to say a dress was a wrong color but was unable to do so. I don't recall her body forcing her to keep trying to say the false word, she just tried and was unable to do so.

I don't think the binders will compell you to keep trying to do something if you fail at it. It will just keep you from doing it, or will make you try to do it that time.

Also, remember that the agelessness comes from the oath's settling down onto the skin.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't have to do with what I mean. The orders the Seanchan gave were regular orders. As you may recall, an order from someone you've sworn on the Oath Rod to obey has the same force as the Oaths themselves.
