New here, just finished the Mistborn trilogy

Wound up finding Alloy of Law on sale somewhere and went for that first, and also bought Way of Kings on a whim, but I was wondering for any further book suggestions. Preferably the Cosmere stuff, since I'm pretty much buying Firefight for sure anyway (Steelheart was actually my first :P).

Which Cosmere entry would be more similar in the high-fantasy tone to the Mistborn trilogy? I don't normally do much retroactive book-purchasing, but this is some good stuff we have here and I'd prefer to jump into something more similar before potentially easing myself off into a different genre outright (at least AOL shares a setting to make it more fun to get into. Well, they all do in the grand scheme of things, but you know, on the scale of planets they don't).

Welcome to the forums!

The most similar in tone is probably Way of Kings, though they're not quiiiiiite the same genre or style.

A list of the Cosmere books you haven't read and my thoughts:

  • The Emperor's Soul. Novella set on Sel (same world as Elantris, though you'd never guess - different continents, different people, etc.) Fantastic novel, definitely among my favorites of Brandon's.
  • Stormlight Archive. Epic fantasy set on Roshar. I'm torn - I want to say they're my favorite books of Brandon's (and I think by most measures they're his best works), but I have some issues with them stemming from the fact that I don't like the majority of cast. I'd highly recommend them.
  • Warbreaker. Set on Nalthis, has a fabulous magic system. I was never too thrilled with the plot of this book (something fell flat for me), but I'd recommend reading it before you touch Stormlight. Or, at least, book 2 of Stormlight. Still quite fun.
  • Elantris. Set on Sel, initially seems like it'll be a zombie story which has a fabulous premise, but turns much more political. My least favorite of Brandon's, and it's also his first published book (and you can notice - his writing ability has improved tremendously over time).

There are other short stories I haven't listed. You can find a full list of Cosmere books here. You can also email Brandon directly and ask for Aether of the Night and White Sand, both of which I recommend (though they're not very polished and were not published for a reason).

What was it that you liked most about the Mistborn books? I can probably recommend a book if you can be more specific about what you liked.

Disclaimer: My thoughts definitely do not represent the majority's on this forum here.

Way of Kings definitely has that same high-fantasy tone as Mistborn. Besides that, though, the closest to me would be Warbreaker; it's always kind of struck me as Brandon's take on that classic swords-and-sorcery, Conan the Barbiarian, Ffhard and the Grey mouser type story.

Remind me to have words with you.
