BenevolentTyrant he/him Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Public transportation is a joke throughout most of the United States. And not a particularly funny joke. This makes me sad. I live in Sydney (Australia) and public transport is my friend. In fact, twice a week I walk to a bus stop to catch a bus to a train station to catch a train to another station to change trains to catch a train to my university's dedicated train station. And Lark, I'm really sorry for what you're going through right now. You're awesome.
Kaymyth she/her Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 This makes me sad. I live in Sydney (Australia) and public transport is my friend. In fact, twice a week I walk to a bus stop to catch a bus to a train station to catch a train to another station to change trains to catch a train to my university's dedicated train station. Le-sigh. That sounds lovely. There are some major metropolitan areas that have good public transport, but for the most part, they are on the east coast. My area is particularly insane. See, the Kansas City Metro squarely straddles the state line between Missouri and Kansas, and also covers multiple counties. Each state has their own bus system. Kansas's bus system makes no attempt to match up with any of the stops along the state line as Missouri's bus system and vice versa, so making it across the state line takes learning two completely unsychronized bus tables and the likelihood of having to walk a mile between stops. In fact, whenever any piece of any government tries to bring about public support for anything that transits the state line via light rail, it is met with suspicion and fear couched in nobody wants to pay for it. The reality is that there are some really stupid stereotypes about people in the each other's county that means that Certain People don't want those Other People to have easy access to their neighborhoods. And the metro area sprawls - we have patches of forest in the middle of densely populated neighborhoods. We have miles and miles of bike trails that all have wooded areas surrounding them. When I still lived in Kansas City proper, we would occasionally see deer in our backyard because we were so close to one of those trails. The weird upshot of all of this is that we have the most highway lane-miles per capita of any metropolitan area in the U.S. I've long maintained that if random crazy fate ever dropped a billion dollars at my doorstep, I'd start a nonprofit light rail company to make decent public transit a reality in my city. 2
Guest Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Here in D.C., we have oodles and oodles of public transport. It's all the money flowing through the Corruption Capitol, I suppose.

Kobold King he/him Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 (edited) Oh. My. Gallifrey. Since I watch Doctor Who on Netflix, I apparently missed out on a scene that's only included on television and on DVD. It involves John Simm as the Master from the Series 3 finale, singing a song that fits him so well it could almost have been written for him. How did I never know about this until today? It only reaffirms my conviction that John Simm, however awesome his successor may be, is still my favorite Master. Edited June 5, 2015 by Kobold King 5

Scissor sisters' I can't decide, not including that song is almost a crime for Netflix. (Just wait until you hear track one. ) 3
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 WHY WAS THIS NOT ON NETFLIX .... I'm off to declare war on the BBC. Anyone with me? 5
ThirdGen Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 It used to be. It was probably cheaper to not re-license(err, UK, so licence) the song. To me, that scene is what makes John Simm's Master really worth something. It tells you more about where he's coming from than anything else. A spoiled child torturing his pets. Still doesn't make up for us getting so little of the Derek Jacobi Master. 1

We will take our army of Toclafane and fly for the heavens. We will chase the BBC from Mutter's Spiral to the Medusa Cascade if we must. They will pay. I adored Simm!Master already, but you're right. This really illustrates his level of narcissistic sadism. Though I've often wondered how much of the Master's insanity was truly pointless and how much was meant to prove some kind of point. After all, the Doctor has often resorted to silliness to comfort his companions or deceive them into thinking he's not troubled by something; could the Master, as a sort of dark reflection of the Doctor, also put up a facade of silliness to mask his ingenious psychological manipulation? Also, Death in Heaven spoilers: The lines 'Oh, you'll probably go to Heaven / Please don't hang your head and cry' take on a whole new meaning after you see the Master's plan in Season 8. They will pay to license the song. Seriously, they make enough money off Hot Topic merchandise sales alone to cover the cost of one measly song. Just when you think the Master can't become any more amazingly disturbing….he regenerates into Missy. 1

+Slowswift Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I was about ready to declare war on BBC America anyways, as they marathon Top Gear and Kitchen Nightmares all the time... but not Doctor Who. WHY. 2
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I was about ready to declare war on BBC America anyways, as they marathon Top Gear and Kitchen Nightmares all the time... but not Doctor Who. WHY. I KNOW! It's a travesty, I tell you! One day, shortly before the 50th anniversary special, BBC America was playing Fantastic Four. And not Doctor Who. Not even Torchwood. Fantastic Four. It's not even a British movie! I mean, yes, it stars a Welsh actor….playing an American, in a movie based on American material, that most Americans don't even like all that much. WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY 1

Yeah, and they did another marathon the day before the 50th, but c'mon. They'll do Top Gear marathons at the drop of a hat. Doctor Who >>>>>>>>>>>>Top Gear. 1

Kestrel she/her Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Cabin in the mountains. We have owned this place for six or seven years as a rental property. Its pretty nice. I'll probably just go hide in the woods or something. I want to go horseback riding but none of my family is interested in actually learning, just trail rides, so its pointless. I'm going to get back with kayaking, though. Should be interesting. Also rafting. I need to get back on the river. 1

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 If anyone finds themselves aghast at the poor grammar on places like YouTube and other sites that aren't 17th Shard (seriously, why does everyone here have such good spelling and grammar? I'm not complaining, but it's still a little spooky when you think about it) Hyperbole and a Half has a few coping mechanisms for you to try. Alot of coping mechanisms. 4
Guest Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 (edited) Thank you so much, Twi. If it wasn't 4 minutes until I clock in, I would obsessively devour every single post on that blog. But now I can't until later . I don't have a bow, axe, or sword, so you can have my jellybeans. Edited June 6, 2015 by Guest
