Vision he/him
Spren are just an awesome idea, and Axies the Collector is easily one of my favorite single-chapter-characters ever. And I can't help thinking that creating different 'species' of spren has got to be an incredibly enjoyable task for Brandon. So, since Brandon has so thoughtfully laid the groundwork for these creatures (they almost always correlate to the presence of emotions and phenomena), I thought it'd be a shame if we sharders didn't take advantage of that fact and try to attract some creationspren of our own. Now for a short list of rules and guidance: Rules: 1) Only include three spren per post, maximum. However, feel free to describe these spren as deeply and intimately as you wish. 2) Physical descriptions and the conditions for appearance are required. Be short/blunt if you wish, but at least share that much detail in addition to the name. Reasoning for these two rules? Well, they keep creativity up and 'spamming' down. In other words, they enforce Sanderson's Third Law: "Expand what you already have before you add something new." And I'm sure that's a law all of you can respect Guidance: While it'd be nice if your creations followed the general trend of sincerity in worldbuilding set by Branderson, you are free to create more 'wacky' spren if you follow the rules. For example: Cookiespren. Little brown lumps of varying size and lumpitude that roll lethargically around gatherings of quality-made cookies. Can be fooled into rolling around hemalurgic spikes disguised as cookies. While creating the cookispren, I realized another somewhat important guideline. A cookie is a very specific object, and spren don't form around such specified objects. A cookie is not an emotion, phenomenon, or concept (Please don't argue this point. While this argument would be hilarious, it is absolutely derailment material.), and so a spren for it does not fit Branderson's pattern. However, create as you see fit. The following should be a very useful tool in both reminding yourself of typical spren patterns and in making sure you're not creating a spren that already exists. Because that's redundant and creationspren will shun you forever. http://coppermind.net/wiki/Spren Note that there are potential spoilers for Words of Radiance (and, I suppose, Way of Kings, but... yeah). And without further ado, I'll kick off the sprenception with three of my own creations: Techspren - Copper-colored, wiry, overlapping squares. Occasionally appear around electronic devices, but swarm when an electronic is malfunctioning, making the issue somewhat more difficult to view and assess. Stinkspren - Waving, sickly green patches of transparent air. It's not known whether stinkspren cause bad smells or are attracted by them. Either way, their presence indicates a need for pure air. Quickly. Lovespren - Subtly pulsating, deep red cardioids. Only found in the presence of couples who have honestly proclaimed love for each other. Refuse to appear to falsely proclaimed or unrequited love. Considered to be a sign of good fortune, but in reality are just confirming the result of hard work already accomplished. Unfortunately, they are not prophetic of future happiness.
A Joe in the Bush
Theoryspren: Pale pink patterns, thought to be stylized organs. They are attracted to people who attempt to convince people to accept their unprovable Conjectures. SubtextSpren: 'Heavy' greyish fog. Attracted to people who say in a word one most say in ten. ReligionSpren: Bright Yellow Patterns. Thought to be stylized Stars. They are attracted to people who attempt to convince people to accept their unprovable Conjectures. Oudeis he/him
Hatspren. The spren of hats. They are not, in fact, attracted to anything, but are generated in the cognitive realm every time a hat is made. They look like floating auroras; the specific color depends on the hat whose creation spawned them (Though they are not simply the same color as the hat. The rules are esoteric and poorly understood). Do not appear naturally in the physical realm, instead requiring a Radiant to travel at least partially into Shadesmar to retrieve the hat. May be worn by other spren, which means they meld with the substance of that spren and grant it a halo's light, as though a tiny invisible spotlight were shining on the spren from above. ((Yes, it's a silly one, I add it because I just read the scene where Lopen suggests that Kaladin buy Syl the spren of a hat in an attempt to un-kill her, because it would probably be pretty cheap.))
Voidus
RAFOspren: These spren are attracted onlyto a very select few people, primarily Brandon Sanderson at any point that their subject is asked a question they don't intend to answer these spren will materialize.Appearance: All attempts to describe these spren have failed, one must simply Read and Find Out for themselves to identify them. Vision he/him
Nerpspren - Mysterious spren that are only visible when viewed with a reflective surface. Looking in a mirror, at polished steel, or at a calm body of water will allow you to see them for example, but these spren are otherwise invisible. Their reflections indicate that they are multicolored streams of light that slowly stream through the air. It is unknown what attracts them, but it it hypothesized that they appear slightly more often near reflective surfaces on purpose. Fatespren - Enigmatic spren that appear during moments when critical choices are made. Although 'critical' is a subjective descriptor, fatespren usually choose to appear during choices that will dramatically alter the final destinations of the person or people involved. Fatespren appear as thin grey loops floating as halos above the person(s) making the decision. They will hang in the air until a permanent decision is made, and then burst into either gold or black fireworks, depending on which option was chosen. The fatespren seem to correlate a gold explosion with a morally wise or tactically sound choice, while a black explosion denotes a 'poor' choice. After exploding, the spren dissolve into the air. Sorrowspren - Spren visible around those who have suffered a great loss of something, such as a friend, trust, or belief. These spren sprout out of the ground as colorful flowers and then wilt quickly, drooping across the body of the depressed individual if they're stationary. If the individual is moving, the sorrowspren will droop towards the person, leaving a trail of 'wilted' brown sorrowspren.
Fatebreaker he/him
Sprog of Fatebreaker the Defiant Entry 7 (sprog = Spren Log) Destruction Spren - Only appear around truly great works of destruction. Generally appear around explosions. They various forms of fire, be it flames, sparks, or embers. They form a wake along the ground of the one who caused the destruction, leaving a path of flames or coals, depending on the magnitude of the act. Too familiar with these. I don't try to, but it just seems to happen. Enigma Spren - Spren that appear when there is a mystery or a particularly difficult riddle. Will sometimes appear around riddle contests, but only for extremely hard riddles. They appear as floating balls of fog. Will sometimes hang around for days or even weeks. Frequently seen at crime scenes. One can become easily disheartened when seeing these, for you know the problem is a complex one that will not be easily solved. I take their presence as a challenge. Madness Spren - Only attracted to the truly insane. They swirl around the person like leaves in a wind and are always laughing softly. Always visible to the one they are following, but they increase in volume and become visible to others when the individual manifests his madness or is about to do something completely nuts. They appear as small, grey, ghostly figures whose legs trail off into smoke. Way too familiar with these. Can be bothersome when you're trying to have a conversation. Can sometimes be calmed by eating a sandwich, but they never seem to truly leave. Will I ever be rid of them? Curiosity he/him
Sneezespren- Long, white and bright, these spren are extremely fast and are seen flashing towards people who stare at the sun after coming out of a dark building. It is thought that these spren may be a subset of surprisespren or ticklespren, but as no one has been able to study them enough during their short period of expression to draw any definite conclusions as to what they are related to.
Vision he/him
Thankspren - Appears as a tan blob vaguely shaped in the image of the rare chicken from Shinovar, strutting happily around in looping patterns. Appear in the presence of sincere feelings or expressions of gratitude. There is a certain holiday celebrated by some western countries dedicated to declarations of thankfulness that attract large numbers of thankspren. Birthspren - Spren attracted to the successful creation of new life, whether plant or animal. Appear as golden, glowing, miniature versions of the new life. A newborn child, for example, will attract birthspren that take the form of miniature golden babies. Birthspren remain in the presence of new life for a varying, seemingly random amount of time, and leave when they are most likely to go unnoticed. Their presence is generally viewed as an indication of a healthy birth. Isospren - Appear around those who are a large distance away from any other individuals of their species. The greater the distance and sense of isolation felt, the larger and more apparently corporeal the isospren will appear. Isospren appear to enjoy keeping individuals company and prevent them from going mad, but can occasionally exacerbate the issue. Never appear in groups of any size. Isospren begin as small gray cubes, and become more structured and intricately detailed as they grow in size. Eventually they will resemble this image in form and appearance:
