High prince of geeks he/him Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I'm not asking how it was first found out (that likely involved slight Shardic influence as I suspect happened with all other magic systems) but forgery and Aondor are so complex. Both of them involve an entire new language and complete understanding of what you are doing. With the other magic I can easily sea being learnt through experimentation. Once the original parts of the magic are found out people learn (gullible the five scholars of Nathalie) but how did people figure out the aons and how to do forgery? Small mistakes can lead to failures in both magic systems, and it is stated even simple versions of beach are incredibly difficult. Did the local shards influence the opulence more then usual, or does it have to do with our view of the magic system. Please help 1
king of nowhere Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 well, aons can be understood; probably people always transformed, and after the transformation they discovered that by wiggling a finger in the air they produced a line. lots of experimentation brought them where they are. forging is more difficult to justify. there is also the possibility that the magic systems were completely different before devotion and dominion were shattered, and so the inhabitants of sel didn't learn it from scratch, but they could use the imput of their previous magic systems to figure out the new ones.
High prince of geeks he/him Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Okay but with the Aons how did they not come up with more stuff like dialogs wife. If it was just figured out by squigling in the air wouldn't cases like her be much more common and not found in some rare book? My new theory is that they originally knew about the connection to the land places and started working off of that. And it slowly faded out of general knowledge until it was only used by spokespeople to help teach aons
lol_king he/him Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=768 This link has Brandons description of Aons and how they were discovered and used. 1
WeiryWriter he/him Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=768 This link has Brandons description of Aons and how they were discovered and used. To be fair that only talks about three of the Aons, and only gives an origin for one (and even that is somewhat apocryphal). Some Aons do have such discovery stories but for the most part it was trial and error over who knows how many years.

Voidus Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Seons have Aons at their centre, so the trial and error wouldn't necessarily have been about coming up with each Aon in turn, just discovering what they do. 1

That implies that Seons were around when they were doing this, which is not a definite thing. We know they were created at the time of the Splintering of Devotion and Dominion but not how.

Well for the current Aonic populations I think they were around when they first settled the region and became Elantrians, although I can't recall any precise WoB, I'll have a quick hunt.

Lord Tavash Shar Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 We do how ever know that the City of Elantris itself Existed before the first settlers arrived based on brandons description here: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=768 Who knows what they would have found in the city or even where it came from.
