TheToday He/him Posted July 8 Posted July 8 (edited) Well, hello there! General Kenobi!  What can I say? I'm a nerd of SO many things and I have SO many guilty pleasures. And I don't even know which is which! From Marvel to Star Wars to LOTR to The Mummy movies to Shrek to whatever. I could say that I don't dislike pineaple on pizza, but I don't wanna start a war either. Too late Eloy, too late damn!  So yeah, that's my name, Eloy. I'm a Spaniard -which is not a great country to be currently from, but hey, I love our food!- and my nickname here is a little joke of sorts. So in Spanish the masculine translation of the would be el, and the translation of today would be hoy. You put them together and remove the "h" letter, and... Voilà ! That's my nickname, Eloy -> TheToday. So yeah, I also have a pretty weird sense of humor. Sorry not sorry!  And well, lol. After all this nonsense mumbo jumbo I'm pretty sure you're thinking my my, where is this weirdo coming from? right now. I've just told you, from Spain! Lol. Jokes aside. There's not a lot I can think of, but I'm from Spain (have I told you that already?), so English is not my mother tongue. I try my best to comply though. I've known about Sanderson's work for years now (I can still hear my former friends asking me a million times to read the Mistborn trilogy, and me refusing because I was too lazy to keep reading books by then. Stupid me!), but I just started reading his books by a year ago. I've started through Elantris, I've read a fair amount of the Arcanum Unbound novellas and I've been following my own Cosmere-Reading-Order handcrafter by my wisdomous-y and the fact that I've been checking and asking for SO MANY reading orders and I've just decided to follow this one. Which, to be fair, may suffer from more changes in the future. Who knows. I'm a crazy person, in case you haven't found out yet for yourself! So I know the introduction topics are not about book questions and debates, but for the sake of introducing myself, I'm at this point now:  COMPLETED: 1. Elantris (★★★☆☆) 2. (AU) Hope of Elantris (★★☆☆☆) 3. (AU) Soul of the Emperor (★★★★☆) 4. White Sand (★★☆☆☆) 5. (Mistborn) The Final Empire (★★★★★) 6. (Mistborn) The Well of Ascension (★★★★☆) 7. (Mistborn) Hero of Ages (★★★★★) 8. (AU) The Eleventh Metal (★★☆☆☆) 9. (AU) Sixth of the Dusk (★★★★☆) 10. (AU) Shadows for Silence (★★★☆☆) 11. (AU) Mistborn: Secret History (★★★☆☆) 12. Warbreaker (★★★★☆) 13. (SA) The Way of Kings (★★★★★) 14. (SA) Words of Radiance (★★★★★) 15. (AU) Edgedancer (★★★☆☆) IN PROGRESS: 16. (SA) Oathbringer INCOMING: 17. Dawnshard 18. (SA) Rythm of War 19. (W&W) Alloy of Law 20. (AU) Allomancer Jak 21. (W&W) Shadows of Self 22. (W&W) The Bands of Mourning 23. (W&W) The Lost Metal 24. (SA) Wind and Truth 25. (HT) Tress of the Emerald Sea 26. (HT) Yumi and the Nightmare Painter 27. The Sunlit Man 28. Isles of the Emberdark 29. (HT) The Fires of December*  And heck. I've loved (and I mean LOVED) the Mistborn trilogy, but the Stormlight Archive has become the owner of my soul. I just can't keep reading, and I'm still half way there! I wanna finish it and I don't wanna finish it at the same time. Does that make any sense? Anyway, see you/read you around! Looking forward to becoming a nice member of this community -or whatever you choose to call it) and get to know some or a lot of you. Cheers! And... Life before destination! No, wait. That wasn't it. Edited July 8 by TheToday I wrote "book" instead of "books" lol. 4
NeverTrustAesSedai He/Him Posted July 8 Posted July 8 Welcome to the 17th Shard! From what I've seen, everything that makes you weird to other people will make you a great addition to the community here, so that's no problem. However, before officially joining our ranks, you must face the interrogation. 1) What is your opinion of Kelsier? 2) Have you been keeping up with the World Cup? If so, who are some favorite teams/players? 3) What roles should Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston play in the upcoming Cosmere adaptations? 1

And since I'm that weird, I'll go backwards with it. Just because why not. 3) Hiddleston is my Hoid, I've been sure of it for a long time. Maybe he's a bit older now? But still. He's too much of a good Marvel version of Loki and that's what makes him such a good Hoid, I guess. Cumberbatch! Not sure lol. And there are many books of the Cosmere I haven't read yet so maybe he truly fits a Mistborn Era 2 character and I have no clue about it. What a shame! But as far as I've read... Uhm. You've got me there. Maybe the main prince of Elantris? I forgot his name. Or one of those high princes of Roshar that Dalinar is trying to unite. 2) Well, I'm from Spain so I'm going for Spain I guess! Although and if I'm being 100% honest I find our team kind of weak this time despite the luck we've had so far. Maybe France? Norway is doing great, but their game feels boring (they've been playing kind of like Spain, but they have something we lack: the Viking Targaryen). Not rooting for Argenfifa though! (Yeah, I'm one of those) 1) Well... Kelsier was a great leader and friend imo! Always rooting for the people. Spoiler Well, his 100% hate for the nobility was a bit crazy. I do like him to be fair, and I've enjoyed his journey through Shadesmar or however you wanna call it in Secret History. I've also accidentally spoiled myself a bit about his... Future? But I can't tell you what I think of it until I actually read it lol. Have I passed? Edited July 8 by TheToday I've called Haland a Lannister instead of a Targaryen! Shame on my cow. And then due to a typo I've claimed that Kelsier hated mobility. Is that a word? Can he hate a table?

ParaTulip fae/faer (declines as she/her) Posted July 8 Posted July 8 Hey, welcome to the shard! Since you like both and are pretty deep into the Cosmere stuff: Any feelings on how it compares to Lotr and star wars? 1
Moongrace Posted July 9 Posted July 9  Hola mi amigo! I am from Germany or is it Scadrial-Threnody? If Spain is the Roshar then the people of South and Latin America where the Parshendi and Dawnsingers.  While I love Spain and obviously spanish-american culture is great we can never forgive the end of the Aztecs 1

My grammar gets completely messed up Is it? My English-Spanish switching system is working nice enough, although I've been living in Ireland for a few years. Maybe that's also why sometimes while speaking Spanish I can't remember how a word is said in that language, but I do remember the English word lol. It's crazy.  10 hours ago, ParaTulip said: Hey, welcome to the shard! Well, I can see the huge interconected universe similarity with Star Wars, and LOTR is definitely epic fantasy at its highest, but besides that... Kindly enlighten me!   3 hours ago, Moongrace said:  Hola mi amigo! I am from Germany or is it Scadrial-Threnody? (I totally HAVEN'T used Google or anything to translate it to the German) Well, if you think about it... I mean, I can't forgive it either. But you're aware that we the 21st century Spaniards have nothing to do with the Aztecs, right? 1

Don't take it seriously haha. I mean we Germans are experts in bringing The Desolations over Europe Though I don't feel responsible. I am not from Earth. I am a proud native of First of the Sun. Obviously a Forger from Sel messed with my memory and made me think I am from here lol. I absolutely love Barcelona and would love to see more Spain on day btw. 3 hours ago, TheToday said: Is it? Star Wars exists for the People. Harry Potter is Tolkien for the People. GoT killed Fantasy for the People. And the Cosmere will bring about a Golden Age of Fantasy for the World when the Mistborn Movies and Stormlight Show come out. Also LotR shows what English can do. Harry Potter shows what English is. 1

I'm coming from a land disk-shaped carried through space over some elephants walking on tha back of a turtle. You can't go better than that! About Barcelona, I find it so interesting that we Spaniards tend to think it way overrated and people abroad tend to think it's a wonder. Don't get me wrong, the city design is a masterpiece and some buildings are beyond magnificent, but in my opinion there are soooo many Spanish cities that are more beautiful- and where you can eat way better  (also, the fact that Barcelona is SO massively overfilled with tourists and immigrants doesn't help our point of view). I usually like to say... If you want nature and food go North (sea-side areas), if you want architecture go South (mainly Andalusia). But in the end it's a matter of taste I guess!  15 minutes ago, Moongrace said: About Star Wars and LotR I actually worked on a Theory of Fantasy:  LotR exists for Tolkien. This is just wonderful, thanks for that. I needed that. Also, Brandon usually refers to him as Grandpa Tolkien, so he's some sort of an Allfather of fantasy in general, even more so than Odin if you ask me.
ParaTulip fae/faer (declines as she/her) Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I do not actually care for the great interconnection of Star Wars, and so that was certainly not what I expected you, @TheToday, to see as the relationship. I also heavily disagree that LotR was written by Tolkien for Tolkien, @Moongrace. I see those two older stories are trying to explain a universal truth in the context of a fantastical world. While the Cosmere is simply set "elsewhere", both LotR and Star Wars set themselves in the distant past so as to imply there notions are those carried forward through time by fate. I think the Cosmere offers this import by suggesting its stories are carried across vast space and told across vast times. Now that I have offered something of a framework, I would care to hear what you think the big time truths of the various works are and maybe how they compare. If you don't care to think about such, that is fine.

I don't think I would fit there very well because their colour of magic is Octarine while I know for a face the colour of magic is chlorata achromata. I find Tolkien interesting to study but don't really love Middleearth that much. But idk I keep it to myself, work on it and don't talk much about it with humans Â

If you don't care to think about such, that is fine. Uhm, that's an interesting approach indeed, but I'd argue that this is what makes the Cosmere different from the worlds of LOTR or Star Wars, and not a similarity between them. My meaning here? The Cosmere is a different universe/galaxy with nothing to do with Earth. Star Wars gives us a expanded approach to a way bigger universe than the planet we live in, which actually is a part of said universe. Middle-Earth -and Arda itself- were originally created by Tolkien as a fantastic, deeper and mythological background to England. So yeah, I see that as a difference more than a similarity, if you ask me  giving Earth/England a deeper fantastic/fake universe or background vs creating a completely different universe/world from ours.  19 hours ago, Moongrace said: Oh!
