You deserve a break from being a unpaid therapist/counseler/all the things. ughhhhh this computers noninterfering autocorrect is so annoying *tangent* Anyways, need to sleep now. Goodnight! The most difficult part is spotting when to support someone. Some people have very direct social cues, others more indirect. But that's a skill I can't teach. There are, from my model of understanding, three main kinds of support you can give: advice, affirmation, and absence. Determining which one to use is very much situational, but I'm sure you'll figure it out one day. You can give multiple at once, or none. Once again, depends greatly on the situation. Starting with the easiest one, absence. Sometimes a person will need you simply not to be there, and that is the best thing you can do to support them. Silence helps some people better than words, especially if they're unlikely to listen anyways. Remember this is always an option. Option two is to affirm them, give them motivation, or words that don't expand their knowledge but rather lift their spirit, reinvigorate them and make them have more faith in themselves or others. Things like seconding what someone else says is a good example. You're affirming what the first person said and showing that you believe in it, offering support to that initial statement. Option three is advice. This is the hardest one to give, because it requires authority in the relevant topic, but it can also be immensely helpful too. This is in fact, what I am doing right now. By expanding your learning, your knowledge, I am supporting your ability to give support. (I'm so meta even this acronym) But in all honesty like a lot of understanding how to use this comes from experience, which I have unfortunate possession of. Experience involves both success and failure. Over time, you will learn things that work and things that don't work, and you will pivot from there. I believe you will. (Also I get breaks all the time; whenever I need one I just step away from the shard for a bit) 1
