Midas, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

Midas sat the first group of detainees down in the aluminum-lined concrete box of a room. Unlike the rest of New Hallandren, this room was dull and brutalistic, built purely for function and not for beauty. Still, Midas' biochromatic aura managed to create color from the drab beiges of the prison-like box. There were small variations in the makeup of the concrete, with different thicknesses of when the beige coating was applied. The door was a dark grey steel, yet it still had ever slight color differences between the different welded plates. The biochroma heightened this contrast, making the room look speckled and intentional. Midas wondered what such a power would do to his homeland, if the individual flecks of ash had differing hues. He supposed he would never know.

"So," Midas said, addressing the trio. "Why were you at the site of the explosion?" Midas had his own suspicions, of course. They were Radiants, and Radiants came to help. The blast was seen in the entirety of New Hallandren, as well as in neighboring districts. With something like that, it would be anomalous to not have Radiants on the scene. But still, policy demanded he question them. And though he doubted they had anything to do with the events that occurred in the southern part of the district, their knowledge would help the garrison get to the bottom of what did happen.

Starseeker, New Hallandren, New Hallandred Garrison

If Midas' BioChroma made colour, Starseeker's created even more.

"I came to check if anyone was hurt by the blast," Starseeker said, keeping his voice level. He'd never been questioned like this, not on Nalthis nor Roshar.

“Are you going soft on me, Ebon?”

Ebon paused. Was that what mercy was? Softness? On Roshar, Ebon had never known mercy. On Roshar, he had been the villain. Yet Ebon knew everything Perses said was right.

”Look at him,” he gestured, more hopeful performance than anything. “Perses, he’s just a kid.” An idea popped into Ebon’s head. “What if… we take him with us?”

Limel, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

Limel was already racing down the garrison corridors as Midas arrived with the witnesses. Papers flew in his wake, and his coat waved behind him as he took a turn after another, startling resting workers. He clutched his binder to his chest, carrying all the information he had.

Limel’s attention was first caught, naturally, by the explosion. But when the first witnesses began to pile in, he had begun to listen. A crater. Radiants. And a Fused.

Could he be the one? Limel didn’t know. But as he raced down the garrison corridors. Limel was intent on finding out.

Genali'poonulah'likum'kai, New Hallandren, crater

Two lashings got him there in a reasonable time. He looks around in amazement as he finds a crater of enormous proportions.

"Wow" he breathes out as he lands "the amount of gunpowder needed for this" It didn't smell like gunpowder, but it took him a while to get here, so maybe it was gone.

Spoiler

Is everyone still here?

Cayansa, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

Midas led Cayansa into a cell-like room. The sudden lack of colour felt a little like how they would imagine dying; grey and black and iridescent all at once. They were relieved to be unbound once more; doubly so when Midas gestured for all three of them to be questioned together.

"So, why were you at the explosion?"

Cayansa wriggled in their seat, then stopped in case it made them look suspicious. Reyx, on the other hand, was glittering so frantically that only the natural shimmering of the room prevented them being instantly visible - even then, they weren't exactly inconspicuous.

Calm down, Cayansa thought to them. We haven't done anything wrong. Yet.

That's not reassuring! Reyx hissed, almost audibly.

"I came to check if anyone was hurt in the blast," Starseeker said, seeming calm but irritated. Well, if he was divinity as the guards had claimed, he probably wasn't arrested very often. Probably.

"So did we," Cayansa added, words stumbling over each other in a nervous stampede. "We heard the explosion, and Kai was in Urithiru and so were we, and we came to help because there were people. I don't know much else."

Kaiden, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison.

Kai had to admit that the vibrancy of biochroma was beautiful. If unfortunately could be obtained by any who wanted it, regardless of intent. In his opinion, it was the cruelest form of investiture, with its history of torture to gain it. Though not as dark as hemalurgy.

Anyway, what had Midas said? Oh right!

"I was with Cayansa, in the Sphere. We heard and saw the explosion, and went to try to help any injured and do damage control or stop a fight if there was one." he answered, somewhat stiffly. "The usual stuff Radiants do."

"Hey Jerrin..." Skye grinned a little apologetically. "Didn't want to bug you while running, did you see where that Fused went? Kai is worried about him."

She sat down and stretched, tho not quite right for how a human should stretch. "And hows Thav doing? You guys still buddies?"

Jerrin, Smokestack, Hideout

"Thav and I are fine," Jerrin said, curtly. "We're still working together. Just...separately. He's spent his whole life following orders. I need to give him some autonomy right now."

"Anyway," he continued, grabbing notepad from one of his desk drawers, "That Fused escape through an Alley. The same one you sent me to investigate. Whoever went through there before him must be an accomplice. But there was someone else. That kid--I don't know if he's a Radiant, or an Allomancer, or something else--was there too. He went through the Alley just before the Fused arrived. I don't know how or if he's involved, but I have my suspicions about who that other person was..."

Midas, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison.

Midas gazed intently at each person in turn, looking for any potential tells of deception. Slight discoloration in their face, moistening of the skin, or subtle alterations of pitch. He did admit that the additional heightenings granted by his status as squad captain did a lot to help his interrogation skills. Thus far, nothing appeared to be amiss. One of the radiants was clearly nervous, but that was evidently more due to being detained rather than trying to cover up a lie.

“I was with Cayansa, in the Sphere. We heard and saw the explosion, and went to try to help any injured and do damage control or stop a fight if there was one,” answered the Radiant who appeared to be the most seasoned of the three. "The usual stuff Radiants do."

Midas nearly rolled his eyes at the remark. He was beginning to understand his people’s hatred of Radiants in the future. They always talked as if they were above all those without a bond, as if it was their fault they didn’t have a bond. Always so arrogant.

”Alright. And when you three got there, after the explosion, what did you see? What information did you gather while you were helping those affected?”

Limel burst through the interrogation rooms, the suddenly felt self-conscious as everyone turned to look at him. Sheepishly, he carefully closed the entry behind him, and walked over to a seat next to Midas, having to catch his binder falling on the way. The entire room waited silently throughout his entire process, and he felt his cheeks turn red.

But he had to do this.

So he sat down next to Midas, pulled out a pile of crumpled note paper and a pen, and stood at the ready.

When nothing happened, he tried to give the witnesses a confident nod. It came out doubtful, and Limel looked down again.

Waiting for answers.

Midas was continuing the interrogation when another person ran into the room. Red-faced, they stumbled, nearly dropped the piles of paper in their arms, and sat down sheepishly. They pulled out a pen and gave a nervous grin to the rest of the room. Cayansa liked them already.

Cayansa cleared their throat, then began to recount what had happened - that they knew of, at least. "The blast range seemed large; the only things I know with that range are the antilight explosions. Kai and I arrived and Starseeker was already there, as well as a few other people..."

They trailed off, uncertain of how accurate their account was. Nothing in this place had been as simple as it seemed at first glance - if it seemed comprehensible to begin with, that was.

If left to their own devices, Cayansa would truthfully recount everything as accurately as they could (and they'll probably try to unless really confused). If Kai or Starseeker wants to lie, they might want to next?

"Starseeker, Lux, and one other with a Nahel bond arrived at about the same time, the other other person got there a bit before me. He seemed to be having a bad response to the area, and since he could use Transportation, I got him to go somewhere safe, though I'm not sure where. There were various injured civilians that Cayansa and I started getting out of the rubble and trying to help with an improvised healing fabrial. Some highly invested individual showed up at the edges of it at some point and I had a friend look into who it was, and my spren is currently attempting to get that information." He hoped that his leaving out Ebon's name and species would clue the others in to be vague about him, and keep him safe.

"Lux." Lux said, standing up. "And i'll do what it takes to survive."

Perses, Alleys, Belias' Domain

Perses let out a deep breath and put his hand to his head, gun still in hand. "I don't have a use for someone like that, but if you do, he's all yours" I can't believe I'm doing this. "But if he runs and word gets out about all of this," Perses said, "Its on you."

With that, Perses walked into the haze and disappeared.

Lux looked over to where the man disappeared, then looked back to Ebon. What did I get myself wrapped in with?

"The kid is a radiant, a Lightweaver named Lux." Skye frowned. "I don't like that he went in there, but he might be more capable than he looks. Who do you think the other one was?" She had her suspicions, but hoped she was wrong. She really didn't want to tangle with Perses right now.

Kaiden, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison.

Uhh so I need to clear up something first

@Hoid Slayer, when Starseeker first arrived after the explosion, he went to the CR quickly since I hadn't known that Ebon would still be there

Was Ebon there the whole time (and we can say Starseeker didn't see him) or did he only appear after Starseeker went into the CR?

Two things:

One, if you tag someone in a quote box it won't send them a notif.

Two, Ebon had popped into a different shell right before the explosion and when all of us arrived he was just standing there in the PR when you went to the CR.

Jerrin, Smokestack, Hideout

"Normal people don't go in Alleys," Jerrin said. "Even to avoid being captured by the police. It's far too dangerous. Unless...you're the so-called 'Prince of the Alleys'..." He stood up and started pacing. "It all seems so random," he continued. "A Fused, an anti-Investiture explosion, Perses. I don't know why they would be connected, but I have a feeling they are. And whatever is happening, it isn't good."

Aradan Liese, Underground, Sewers

Following closely behind Thav, Aradan kept his eyes open for anything that might signal a trap. When they arrived at the cavern, unsure what to do, he just stayed silent and close behind Thav.

Thav, Underground, Meeting Cavern

Thav turned his steel on, tracking pieces of metal around him. He couldn't tell for sure who might be Metalborn, but he could tell who wasn't. Unfortunately, most people in the cave had some metal on them, and it was difficult to tell if it was in the form of metal vial or metalminds, or mundane accessories. He kept his steel on to alert him of any sudden movements.

A man wearing a brown suit stepped up to the raised platform at one end of the cavern. Immediately, voices quieted down, and people began finding seats. Thav sat down in one of the rows near the back. "Welcome, friends," the man said, smiling broadly. "I hope that you have enjoyed this gathering so far." His eyes swept the room. "But I imagine, you all would like to know why you were invited here." He paused, letting the anticipation build.

Clearly a gifted speaker, Thav thought. But I don't think he's in charge of all of this. Just a spokesman.

"Allow me to introduce myself," continued the speaker. "You may call me Cuvel. You may not feel it yet, but I can see that there is great kinship between all of us in this room. I may not know you, but I know why you came. You were drawn by the rumors you've heard whispered about us. About what we are doing. All of us are here because of weakness."

There were some confused murmurs throughout the cavern, but Cuvel only grinned wider. "I do not say this to insult you, friends. We are all weak to begin with. Some of you may think you have power: perhaps you are an Allomancer, or a noble lord. Some of you know you have nothing. In our own ways, we are weak. We are here because we need more."

Many in the crowd were nodding, and Thav himself found himself considering what was being said. "We need more," Cuvel repeated. "to protect our friends; to provide for our families; to stand up for our own dignity. We need more!"

Thav found himself being swayed by the argument. He remembered the bodies of his allies--dead because he was too weak. Useless. Come on, keep it together, he told himself. He's just trying to manipulate us.

Fenna, Underground, Meeting Cavern

Fenna still leaned against the wall near the cavern exit. Cuvel's words seemed to be resonating with his audience. She found herself agreeing. He certainly-- Wait...

Fenna smiled. She could feel a faint touch on her emotions. An old strategy, but undoubtedly effective.

Ah okay.

Starseeker, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

One other with a Nahel bond, Kaiden had said... who was he talking about? There weren't any other Radiants, and Starseeker did not see any reason one would lie about there being an extra Radiant. And one with Transportation, too. Starseeker also noticed that Kaiden had left out the Fused, and so he decided to do the same.

"I arrived first," Starseeker said. "And I began Soulcasting away the fires around the rim of the crater. When I returned from the Cognitive Realm, Kaiden and Cayasana were here. Fortunately, the explosion wasn't in a populated area."

Aradan Liese, Underground, Meeting Place

Clasping his hands behind his back, Aradan scanned the room. Then someone walked onto a wooden platform—almost a stage, instantly drawing his attention. The man, wearing a shabby, brown suit, had a black goatee and thick eyebrows. Thinking for a second, Aradan stood still for a second, not noticing everyone moving to sit down. For a second, he met eyes with the man, who frowned for an instant—so rapid that Aradan wasn’t even sure that it had occured. Blinking, he noticed everyone sitting in the rows of chairs; he then went to sit in a chair next to Thav. Have I seen him before? This man reminds me of—after saying something, probably irrelevant, the man gazed around the room, and stared at Aradan for a half-second.

Who is this man? Either he recognizes me, or he knows I don’t belong here. I might just be acting paranoid, but… “But I imagine, you all would like to know why you were invited here.” I would. I still don’t know anything about this group. I’ve trusted Thav so far, but I need more information. “…call me Cuvel,” the man continued, “You may not feel it yet, but I can see that there is great kinship between all of us in this room. I may not know you, but I know why you came. ou were drawn by the rumors you've heard whispered about us. About what we are doing. All of us are here because of weakness.” Aradan sat up in his seat. Something else is happening. Either Thav, this man, or both, I’m not being told something.

This time, Aradan didn’t notice Cuvel’s gaze. “We are all weak to begin with. Some of you may think you have power: perhaps you are an Allomancer, or a noble lord. Some of you know you have nothing. In our own ways, we are weak. We are here because we need more.” I…failed. I do need more power for justice. This group…perhaps I can take it over. “We need more to protect our friends; to provide for our families; to stand up for our own dignity. We need more!” Something is very wrong. Perhaps…I do need power. Maybe he is right. My parents, possibly criminals, died. Surely they couldn’t have been the worst kind. Or that person was lying. I should have protected them.

Attention wandering for a second, he noticed two people whispering to each other near the entrance. One of them pointed at him. Aradan frowned, then realized he had been subconsciously lightly burning pewter. Aradan’s blood went cold. There could easily be a Seeker in the audience, or anywhere in the cavern. He quickly extinquished his pewter, but if anyone was watching, it may be too late.

Thav, Underground, Meeting Cavern

"But there are those who would stand in our way," Cuvel continued, and Thav's skin crawled as he realized the man was looking straight at him. "Tell me, Thavel Talin, why are you here? Why do you seek us?" Heads turned in confusion before eventually finding Thav, who now sat with the room's full attention on him. "Do you not see the truth we stand for?" Cuvel demanded, raising his voice. "Why would you oppose us?"

Heart racing, Thav tapped zinc considering the speaker's words. He still found it hard to dispute what he had said. "I have one good reason," Thav said, standing. "I'm not hear because of your ideology. I'm here because you sent an Inquisitor to kill me and my friends!" The people around him began whispering loudly, their voices echoing in the cavern. Cuvel smiled. Rusts, Thav cursed. He wanted me to say that.

This wasn't going well. Thav took a deep breath, then drew his guns.

A strong arm grabbed him from behind and flung him to the side. The air was knocked from his lungs as he slammed into the stone wall and slumped to the ground. He looked up dazed as a man bulging with muscles stepped towards him. A Brute.

Thav tapped zinc trying to clear his head. He needed to take out the Smokers so he could use his bronzesense. He quickly identified a pair of guards hanging back in the corners of the room and lined up his shots. Just as he fired, however, the air shimmered and everything began moving at blurring speed, except the musclebound man striding towards him. Rusts.

Fenna, Underground, Meeting Cavern

Fenna turned in confusion with the rest of the crowd as Cuvel turned his attention to one man in the middle of the crowd. She recognized him as one of the last people to arrive at the meeting. Glancing around, she took a step closer, in case this was something she was supposed to intervene in.

Fenna tensed as the man stood, then reached for his guns. Before she could react, however, Bairn--who had apparently been hiding with the rest of the crowd--flung the man across the room and strode towards him. The air shimmered as a cadmium bubble popped up, slowing both Bairn and his opponent to a crawl relative to the rest of the cave.

Aradan Liese, Underground, Meeting Place

Knocked to the side by the Brute, Aradan was dazed for a second. Quickly tapping gold to heal his bruise, he jumped up and pulled out a quarterstaff. It’s been a while since I’ve had to use this. Burning pewter and iron, he pulled on Cuvel’s belt buckle, causing him to stumble and pulling Cuvel towards Aradan. As a guard jumped on Aradan, he flared pewter and struck him, hard. Ribs cracked and dazed, the guard slammed into the wall. He then jumped while pulling on a light fixture in the ceiling. Landing right in front of Cuvel, he pointed a pistol at him.
