I put much effort into trying to keep Sam from becoming a Sympathetic Sue. Wes, should he ever be released from Lightwards' control, would become a stunning example of The Dog Bites Back. (Why don't we have a TV Tropes page already? :P)

I'd say go for it. :)

She doesn't seem Sueish to me. And if Wes bit back, that would be not only stunning, but beautiful. Because it's a dinosaur. Biting Lightwards. If anyone deserves to be bitten by a dinosaur, it's him. :P

I think it's a good thing this RP is set in Oregon instead of Newcago. Some of Nathan's more Woobie-inclined moments back at the casino might wind up reading like a Doofenshmirtz backstory if such a thing were ever Played For Drama. (Though some of Backtrack's whinier moments sound like a Doofenshmirtz backstory Played For Laughs in the grand tradition of Doofenshmirtz backstories. When he tells his story to Lightwards, I will have a very hard time not reading it in a Drusselsteinian accent. :P "And then, just when I thought I had crawled to safety from the terrible darkness of Koschei's mind, who should be standing before me but Lieutenant Mitchins of The Dalles City Guard. He has some problem with bikinis. I mentioned them and he got all serious when he said 'NO BIKINIS ON MY WATCH.' Seriously, who does that?" :P )

Remington has shades of the Stoic Woobie. Epic!Sam would become Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.

Also, Ari is incredibly awesome. :D Who's going to do the honors of ponifying her?

It seems essentially impossible to be a Vanilla in this game and not a Woobie as well or being in the presence of Nighthound that alone is enough to make everyone a woobie. :(

The golden rule seems to be first comes first served.

Let's all take a moment to thank the MEE for playing the role of Portlands Mooks.

Their sacrifice shall not be in vain and their deaths shall be glorious!

Idea: If Firefight punches minivan-sized holes in this RP, I vote we soothe our sorrow by having our characters do something so ridiculously non-canon Brandon Sanderson will laugh without knowing what he's laughing at. Like all beating up on Calamity, who is actually Santa Claus. :P

Why not? Go big or go home, right?

(Does second or third week of January sound okay to everyone?)

Sounds great to me. :)

Feel free to make any ponies you want. I look forward to the end product.

And thanks for the compliment on Ari, Kobold. I've been trying to get her voice right, and I was rather proud of the storytelling Epic power. Expect a profile for her shortly (but not too shortly...)

Just so everyone knows, although I haven't posted bios for or even named most of them I have a good hundred or so Epic profiles for the MEE which are just based around some of the more common powers (Illusionists, fire Epics and so on) with some pretty severe limitations and there'll probably be a couple of those in each of the attacks so feel free to mention offhandedly killing a few.

And here is little Ari!

I considered a pen or inkwell for her cutie mark, but since she tells the stories in her head, I figured something representing imagination was more appropriate.

That's amazing!!!!

I think i´ve said this before but should the attacks turn out as bad as it seems they will I think most of those will have the sense to quit the MEE.

Edit: Also, going through TVTropes reminds me of just how many Woobies we have. I'd even contend that all of our vanilla characters, with the exceptions of Autumn and Revolution, are various shades of Woobie.

Of course, given the setting, that's kind of expected.

And Blastaway is meant to be a Jerkchull Woobie.

Ok so I already mentioned this to TwiLyght and Edgedancer, but I had this idea for the Astoria thread.  Basically, there's this super-powerful epic who lives on an island, and he takes other epics as prisoners.  Some of those prisoners escaped, but they know they are too weak to fight him themselves, so they figure out a way to bring him to Astoria so the other epics will be forced to fight him.  Here are the details:

Chaos

Age: 50

Appearance:  Brown hair winged with grey, slightly taller than average.  He's the kind of guy you would expect to see driving a very expensive car.  Each version of himself wears different clothes so they can tell each other apart.

Primary power: Specialized Mitosis.  Every time he hears someone swear using the word "Calamity", one of him duplicates.  The multiples of Chaos are not a hive mind, but they all agree with each other and work together.

Secondary power: Power steal.  Whenever he kills an epic, he gets its active powers.  He also gets its weaknesses.  Only the Chaos who killed that epic gets the power, not all of them.  Chaoses can give away their powers to each other, but it requires skin contact.  If a Chaos is killed, any powers it held are lost.

Names: In order to differentiate themselves, Chaoses choose different names, but always prefix them with Chaos.  Usually, it's the name of an epic it killed.  For example: Chaos Boyfriendpants has the power to telepathically open jars of pickles.

Weakness: Actually, I haven't thought of a good weakness for Chaos yet.  Suggestions are appreciated.

Order, Chaos's island home

Order is actually technically an archipelago, but all the islands are very close together and are connected by bridges.  They were raised from the ocean by Chaos Godforge, the most powerful Chaos, ever since he lucked out and managed to kill a volcanic epic.

Here is the hierarchy on Order:

Chaos>Agents>Servants>Gladiators>Slaves

Chaos:  There used to be a lot more of him, but many Chaoses were killed in the Servants' Rebellion, including a particularly important one who could influence the growth of plants.  They do work to build Order, but they prefer to have the Servants and Slaves do it for them.

Agents:  Chaos has a few Epics who he trusts.  They have a higher social status on Order, and are sometimes sent on special missions around the world.  A servant must tell Chaos his weakness in order to become an agent.

Servants:  These are Epics who are enslaved by Chaos.  Almost all of them are weak epics.  While slaves do the menial jobs required to build Order, the servants do the heavy lifting.  Chaos often threatens to kill them if they stop being useful, and they know he's serious.

Since the recent Servants' Rebellion, there are no more servants on Order.

Gladiators:  Sometimes, Chaos brings Epics to Order who are too volatile to be given even the slightest amount of freedom.  While servants are supervised while working with important equipment, Gladiators are imprisoned between fights.  Chaos forces them to fight to the near death, then finishes the loser off himself to gain the power.  This is a rare event.

Slaves: There are humans on Order.  They are forced to labor every single day, but the food and healthcare aren't half bad.  Chaos likes his slaves strong.

The Servants' Rebellion (This is backstory)

Obviously, Epics don't like to be subjugated.  Servants often get fed up, but they almost never succeed in taking down more than one or two Chaoses before they are killed.

That was before Planeshift arrived.  Planeshift had people skills (epic skills?) and he got the servants to band together.  They told each other their weaknesses so that if a Chaos killed one, the others would easily be able to kill that Chaos.  They arranged "accidents" for the servants who wouldn't join them.  The formed a plan to escape.

Their plan didn't go as well as they hoped.  While they were successful in killing a large number of Chaoses, in the end most of them were cornered with no hope of escape.  Many committed suicide so Chaos wouldn't get their powers.  That's how much they hated him.

Only three escaped.

Fugitives from Order:

Planeshift

Planeshift worked to keep Reckoners in Idaho safe.  They were ignorant of this fact.  He encouraged the other epics he knew to avoid using their powers when they weren't absolutely necessary.

Age: 26

Appearance: Almost always covered in bruises.  Light brown hair, buzz cut.  Ratty, torn servants clothes.

Active Power:  Dimensional dilation.  Planeshift can stretch or contract, but only in one dimension at a time.  The dimensions are relative to his body (z-axis is up and down, y-axis is right and left, x-axis is aft and fore).  So he can contract with z and then walk through the crack under a door, or crawl under a car then expand with x to lift the car.

Passive Power:  Unbreakable bones.  Note: the rest of Planeshift is very breakable.  So when he uses his powers to lift something, or to punch someone very hard, his bones are fine but his tissue is very bruised.

Weakness:  When his weakness is activated, his bones become breakable again.  Osteoporosis runs in the family.

Current Event: He follows Planeshift.  He can control currents.  His ability allowed them to escape Order.

Memori: She follows Planeshift.  Limited telepath.  She can temporarily give people selective memory.  She is terrified of other telepaths.

The plan:

Now that they have escaped Order, the Fugitives are heading to Boise, Idaho.  Planeshift knows an Epic named Tektonix who lives there. When Calamity gave Tektonix the ability to move continents, Planeshift convinced him how stupid it would be to use that power.  Now Planeshift plans on convincing Tektonix to bring Order to Oregon.

The Fugitives rode the currents up the Columbia River.  Current Event was just commenting on how lucky they were that they got through Astoria and Portland without running into trouble when he was shot by a bow-wielding panda.

So what do you think?  I was thinking of having the Fugitives scurry through the Dalles, then having at least one of them escape in a car up the 84, then return for the Astoria thread.

I am open to all suggestions, especially for a good weakness for Chaos.  He's supposed to be powerful, but even though he has no invincibility, I think he might still need to be nerfed a little bit.

Wow. That's super detailed (and sounds super awesome). :D

For a weakness, here are some ideas….

Napoleon Dynamite: Chaos, from the information here, seems to be a typical grandiose, god-complex Epic who was more successful than most in gaining territory. Napoleon Dynamite is a movie about a strange boy with strange tastes, who befriends an exchange student and, after a lot of what seems like nothing, wins. Napoleon is extraordinarily ordinary. His victories almost look like accidents. He seems to have no interest in ruling the school for himself, but wants to see Pedro become the leader. In other words, Napoleon Dynamite is as close to Chaos' opposite as you can get. Maybe he despised that movie as a vanilla, and grew to hate it even more as an Epic?

A book on, documents from, or records of the Navajo justice system. With family and domestic disputes, the Navajo courts take a "horizontal" approach to justice: Unlike Anglo courts, which hand justice down "vertically" (the judge hands the verdict down to law enforcement, who see the sentence is carried out) these courts believe justice should involve everyone who will be affected by the verdict as equals. So let's say there's a custody dispute. Rather than having the couple argue their cases before a judge, who decides what should happen to the child, the couple, the child, and other extended family members would be called together to discuss the case, air how they feel and what has and would hurt them. There are arbiters, and together, they come to a conclusion that is "restorative" rather than "retributive." If this isn't the antithesis to Order's laws, I don't know what is.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The villain creates holograms of himself to serve as an army of yes-men. He is also morally bankrupt and has limbs that defy the laws of physics. And yes, in the end he dies in a fairly horrifying way. This might make Chaos feel uncomfortable deep down.

Pug puppies. These are so adorable that Chaos would be too distracted to do anything but sit on his knees and say "Aww….what a cute little bandit mask you have! Oh, you just tilted your head! How did you get to be so cute?"

Some of those were fairly tongue-in-cheek, but hopefully they help with ideas.

That´s a lot and a lot of good stuff. Okay, first of all my standard round of clarification questions: On the power stealing, while meta-powers like that always feel a bit weird the one copy limit and also getting the weakness keeps it from being broken, so I´m not objecting. Although, I would add the caveat of him not being able to copy the power of Epics while they are under the effect of their weakness to keep him from amasing prime Invincibilities.

Would Planeshift also return to his normal dimensions, while his weakness is in effect.

With currents do you mean air and wind currents, other ones or more? Does control also mean strengthen?

Selective memory in the "can remember every small detail"way or the "can only remember what she wants them to remember"way?

Most importantly: What number of Chaoses are we talking about and what range of powers? Your story also ommits why he would be in Astoria in the first place.

I love these ideas, especially the Napoleon Dynamite one. What should happen to Chaos when his weakness is activated?

Chaos can't steal passive powers at all. So he can't become invincible.

No, Planeshift wouldn't return to his normal size.

Current Event can control, create, and increase water currents. But they have to be currents within the water. So it's not like he could carry a floating stream of water around with him, floating in the air. But if his enemies are swimming, Current Event could create am undertoe or a rip tide to try and drown them.

The latter. It's useful for interrogations. Or for making Tektonix remember how much he trusts Planeshift, but forget how Planeshift convinced Tektonix to never use his powers.

I haven't figured out what a good number of Chaoses would be. It needs to be formiddable, but fightable.

And the Fugitives are going to convince Tektonix to move Order and bring it to Astoria.

Sorry if I have typos. I'm typing this from my phone.

I have an idea for my child epic:

Epic name: he doesn't have one (yet)

Primary power: Can control love and hatred. He can influence other people's love and hatred of himself and other people.

Passive power: Emotional projection: when he feels very strong love or hatred towards someone, other people feel those feelings toward that person.

If Mitosis is anything to go by powers don´t have to be pasive to make an Epic almost impossible to kill without his weakness. Granted the Reckoners also assume his cloning to be unique but... storms they suck at colecting info about what happend in Oregon. :P

Obligatory does this work on Epics question, because if it does he can just make everyone love him and with maybe the exception of a couple creeps ala Nighthound he just recruited all of them, making victory his.

Or maybe every time his weakness is activated, his newest duplicate of himself dies. Sort of like how everyone says "I don't believe in fairies" a fairy dies, every time Chaos hears someone say "Tina, you fatlard, come get some ham!" a Chaos dies.

Actually I was considering having a minor epic called Movie Quote on Order who could only speak in movie quotes, until one day, a Chaos finally lost his crem and killed him. Then he realized that it was actually an active power, but it's weakness was that he could never stop using it until somebody got so annoyed they killed him. It was a wonder that Movie Quote survived that long. So then Chaos Movie Quote would end up killing himself so that the power would die, because he thought it was so annoying. I never intended on actually including it. However, if the quote was something from Napoleon Dynamite and somebody saw it, it could be useful.

It wouldn't have been one of the three fugitives though. That would just be too convenient.

Given that it´s essentially a roundabout way to godmod I would discourage it.

Depending on what his weakness turns out to be that might start a chain reaction killing all his clones, making it not only a bit unpredictable but also necessitating you to keep track of the clones order.

Crap. My phone double-posted.

Isn´t there a hide function for stuff like this?

Oh, so there is.  Voila! hidden.

Well, I think I'll start working on a post for the Fugitives in the Dalles.

I do have one character whose favorite movie is Napoleon Dynamite. This has been in my notes for a while, but it hasn't been referenced in game yet. This character is currently in Portland and wouldn't have much of a reason to go anywhere near Astoria, so unless this character and Chaos cross paths after a viewing of this movie, I doubt it will be a problem for him.

Wow. This sounds really cool. I think you balanced his powers pretty well with the one copy limit and the weakness. Can a Chaos gather more than one power at a time?

Would Planeshift stay at whatever size he was when his weakness was activated?

Astoria is building up to be very cool! :)
