have there been any meaningful changes to this character since era 8?

Worth noting that the Alleys are a separate realm to the physical realm, being a sort of mix of the cognitive realm and the spiritual realm, but dark and evil. People can absolutely survive in it, but it requires being very lucky and/or skilled and/or powerful. Your character could absolutely survive in the Alleys, but I assume what you probably want is something more like an actual place in the city, like the underground. But if you do want to have your character live in the Alleys, I'd have them live in there for a shorter amount of time, and move about less. Its an absolute maze of a place, and even with a cryptic helping out, there are some incredibly dangerous things in there.

Not really, unfortunately. I didn't get much rp in before people I was in plotlines with started dropping off. Only changes are specifying how he got here through the spiritual realm, now that we are post WaT spoilers, and a few connections to other characters that may or may not come back.

Mmmmm. I do really like the idea of someone who knows the alleyways (at least enough to not die there) well. I could make it so that Lux lives in The Underground, but frequently goes out in the alleyways to try and find his way back home. (Obviously he hasn't succeeded, the Alleyways are still very confusing for him, even with 5 years of exploring).

Oh! I have an idea!

Spoiler

Name: Lux Textor
Appearance: A small kid with a shifting pattern on his sleeve, it moves in a fractal-like pattern. Ragged clothes, messy hair, dirt everywhere as if he’s been sleeping on the ground. Also wears a mistcloak but doesn’t hold themselves the same way a mistborn would.
Affiliations: Part of the Radiants, lived in Urithiru for a short while.
Human Personality: A shy kid who has gone through a lot of stuff, and isn’t really fazed by much anymore. Treats everyone as their equal, doesn’t bend to authority. Quite Introverted, but if you crack them out of their shell, they will imprint to you because they crave companionship. Is scared of conventional security, prefers places he knows, even if they might be more dangerous.
Spren Personality: Fractal has been with Lux through thick and skin. Fractal was there when Lux's life fell apart, Fractal was there when Lux swore his first Ideal. Fractal has become one of Lux's only companions. Fractal has the general cryptic vibe, and enjoys repeating patterns. However, Fractal would also do anything for Lux, as Fractal sees Lux as Fractal's responsibility, and even acts as a parental figure often. Fractal doesn't interact with many except Lux, but will give warnings to those he perceives as dangerous to Lux.
Concept: A lost child turned lightweaver.
Motivation (Short & long term goal): Lux desperately wants to find a friend, although he is wary of strangers. He wants to find his way back to his family, and get higher ideals as a Lightweaver.
Merits: Lux’s major merit is being a first ideal lightweaver. His normal merits are that he knows the alleyways like the back of his hand, and he is fairly skilled with knives. Lux knows how live on his own, without a stable income, how to sleep in the alleyways (without dying), and knows how to haggle.
Flaws: Not only is Lux a poor beggar, Lux has deeply repressed trauma (think dragonsteel main character) that will be a great impediment to his goals of becoming a better lightweaver, and finding his family.
Relationships (Eg. Family and Friends): Had 2 parents, and a few friends when he was living in Urithiru, but doesn’t expect to see them again. Os friends with a cryptic named Fractal.
Home Planet: Roshar, Urithiru. Was born somewhere around the end of RoW and the beginning of WaT. Parents never bothered to explain to their 1-8 year old child what exactly was happening, and only knows early RoW levels of history.
Current Residence: Sleeps in the Underground, spending his days in the Alleyways.
Backstory: Born to lightweaver and Windrunner parents, lived in Urithiru until he was 8. He made friends with a Cryptic named Fractal. His parents took him outside of Urithiru on a vacation, and he was mesmerized by the outside world. Whe staying the night in a hotel, it burned down, and he awaked in time to see 2 charred bodies in his parents bed. Running away, and getting trapped in the Alleyways, he repressed the sight of what he believed was his parents dead bodies. Thinking that his parents were still alive somewhere and mad at him for running away, he navigated his way through the alleyways and made his way to The Underground. He stayed in the Underground because he was too scared of city above, and ventured into the alleyways almost every day, becoming increasingly comfortable in it. One day, when he was 10, he got trapped in the Alleyways for days and was terrified. Through all the pain, he finally swore the first ideal, and was able to navigate the alleyways a bit better with his lightweaving. Bonded with his friend, Fractal, he the found a discarded mistcloak at the age of 11, and realized it made some things avoid him, not knowing the reason.
Loose ends (What is unfinished in their life?): Still believes parents are alive, although Fractal knows better.

I wouldn't say that he would end up knowing the alleyways like the back of his hand, as the Alleys are ever changing and highly unstable, so truly understanding the layout is impossible, but having an idea of how to navigate it is fairly possible.

That's a @Ookla the Cutest question, as they're currently trying to take the lead on that (as I currently understand), but I would expect that it would be unlikely for the era to actually start until the new year.

Spoiler

Name: Starseeker
Appearance: A man in his late 20s when he Returned, he is 201 cm tall, has black hair and violet eyes. He wears the robes of a Returned, violet for him.
Affiliations: The priests he left behind in T'Telir, whom he hasn't seen in a long time,  Kaladfin, who helped him sabotage the Skybreakers on Roshar, and his Inkspren Crimson.
Personality: He is rather casual and rather easy to gain the trust of, though living around the gods makes him weary of those who seem too eager. He treats almost everyone like an equal, except for the few he sees as evil. He is also quite optimistic.
Concept: A Radiant Returned to wants to see the Cosmere.
Motivation (Short & long term goal): Starseeker doesn't really have any major goal anymore besides exploring, since he now is no longer reliant on taking Breaths to live. However, he does have to find a way to pay for his room.
Merits: He's a Second Ideal Elsecaller, a Returned (is this too much?) and has an affinity to music.
Flaws: He's unpracticed with his Surges and can't yet Elsecall out of Shadesmar yet, and has WoR Shallan-level Soulcasting. Starseeker's also prone to deception by those he thinks are helping him and still misses having his priests around.
Relationships (Eg. Family and Friends): He does not know any of his family, if he even has any. As for friends, he really only considers Crimson as one.
Home Planet: Nalthis, Hallendren
Current Residence: He rents a room in New Hallendren.
Backstory: He left Nalthis via Endowment's Perpendicularity after hearing a story from Hoid. In Shadesmar, he learnt of Roshar and the Skybreakers, and saw this as a chance to drop his reliance on Breath. He emerged from Cultivation's Perpendicularity and travelled to Purelake where the Skybreakers were training hopefuls (it's a Sanderson Elimation game, and what he was created for). Starseeker joined, but turned on them when he became an Elsecaller and realised that the other Radiant Orders were still possible. He fled once again to Shadesmar with Kaladfin (a character of TwinStorm's) and his new spren Crimson. Sometime later, he split up with Kaladfin and encountered on of the Doors, leading to the Door-Ways RP, where he was discovered by 18142, a character of mine made for TLT. 18142 told Starseeker of places like TLT, BftS and Trisolaris. Starseeker left sometime later, back in the CR, and encountered the Alleyverse,
Loose ends (What is unfinished in their life?): Starseeker does want to meet back with his priests eventually, though he doesn't know that one of them was a Pahn Kahl in disguise and died sometime after he left (another Sanderson Elimination game)

This is true. I am currently trying to read some of the other eras so that I can learn how to be a better mod.

Do you know when Era 9 will start IRL yet? I would be interested in joining but may not be hugely online for the next two and a half weeks.

Seems interesting! and no, returned+elsecaller isn't too overpowered. My main wondering is his personality, but if this is a threadhopper, I assume you've created a solid personality for him. The only thing I'd consider is how his abilities and experiences flow into merits and flaws. However, I trust your character is fleshed out enough, so I'll go ahead and approve him.

I thought we were only allowed to have one major merit?

Spoiler

Name: Saitaku

Appearance: A twenty-five year old JinDo, dark skin heavily scared from previous fights and failed spikes. You can see the points of some sticking out of his shoulders if you look closely. Most of the time he will wear enveloping cloaks to hide his spikes, with a white formal shirt and black formal pants with sturdy boots underneath. He has green eyes and black hair with streaks of it bleached to white. Oftentimes he will have iron spikes on his belt, both to be used as a weapon, and for hemalurgy as needed.

Affiliations: He has negative affiliations with most of the organizations on Scadrial. Harmony does not like him, and neither do the ghostbloods. He isn’t in an organization right now, but wouldn’t mind being in one. He only recently got to the Allyverse, so he doesn’t have any affiliations there.

Personality: He’s willing to engage in conversation, but he is reluctant to give out any information. He’s wanting more spikes, so if he feels like he can harvest strength from you without others knowing he will. This means he’s open to working with people, but also means that usually they don’t end up working together twice.

Concept: A Heavily spiked person who harvests stuff from the people he kills.

Motivation: Right be it’s one of survival, Harmony is very mad at him, and so he’s trying to avoid his agents. Long term would be to go back to Sel and liberate his people from the Fjordel Empire

Merits: He first off practices hemalurgy, stealing strength with Iron spikes(he has 3 right now), He’s a passable knife fighter(helps him get spikes) and he’s a good at cooking, specifically making street food.

Flaws: He doesn’t see people as people. He doesn’t even see the JinDo as people, he’s trying to save them out of National Pride.

Relationships: He ended up running into Lux during his brief time in the Alleyways, and tried to kill Lux for a spike( I’ll be filling this out later after I talk to people)

Home Planet: Sel, but spent a lot of time on Scadrial.

Current Residence: After leaving Scadrial, he currently doesn’t have one, he’s trying to find a place though. He arrived through an Alley in the Mistkeep district, and is hoping to leave that area quickly.

Backstory: So… Saitaku was forced out of JinDo during the Fjordel Invasion, he didn’t agree with the others just letting them do it. Fought the Fjordel for a while, but eventually ended up getting thrown into Dominion’s perpendicularity and into shadesmar. After getting his bearings and getting away from the Dor, he made his way to Scadrial, where he joined up with the Set and learned some Hemalurgy. It was there he got his first iron spike. After the failed attempt to bomb Elendel, he ditched them and ended up killing a Kandra and taking their blessings, which is how he got the other two iron spikes. That caused Harmony and The Ghostbloods to be pretty mad at him, and he had to flee, and he ended up going into an alleyway and coming to the Alleyverse

Loose ends: Fjordel, Harmony, Ghostbloods, they don’t like him, they’re probably hunting him, he is a monster, so it’s perfectly reasonable.

Ok I don’t have names for things yet, but I’m planning on going through everyone else’s characters and finding who could potentially interact with my character, so once I talk to people about that I can add that.

Edit: after looking through all the others characters, most of them seem to be from Roshar, which means my character wouldn’t have any contact with them, so if any new people want to be a part of my backstory, just pm me to let me know, otherwise, it seems all the people are NPCs, so… yeah.

Aren’t you already two characters? Lux and Fractal.

Edit: I found this, idk if it’s still accurate, but idk

I thought we were only allowed to have one major merit?

yes, that is largely correct. However, being a returned isn't really a major merit, and is more of a normal merit at best. Like it gives you a bunch of small buffs (agelessness, immunity to poison/sickness, up to 5th heightening), but doesn't actually impact your abilities in major ways, in comparison to something like a steelrunner.

yes, on the condition that you are able to handle twice the responsibilities. Two characters mean that you can be involved in two separate scenes, but that means that you need to actually be active and present for both scenes. The more characters you have, the more you need to be involved and push forward the plot. I'd usually recommend starting with one character, see how you are doing with that, and then maybe add another character if you think you can handle it.

  Reveal hidden contents

Merits: He first off practices hemalurgy, stealing strength with Iron spikes(he has 3 right now) and he also practices ChayShan, but unless he has access to to investiture, he can’t use it, he’s far from Sel. He’s a passable knife fighter(helps him get spikes) and he’s a good at cooking, specifically making street food.

Flaws: He doesn’t see people as people. He doesn’t even see the JinDo as people, he’s trying to save them out of National Pride.

Relationships: (I’ll be filling this out later after I talk to people)

That's what the collaboration thread is for! and is probably something to figure out once @Ookla the Cutest has an idea on how they want era 9 to operate in comparison to era 8.

As for the character, I assume he is intended to be an antagonist of sorts? Also, does he currently have only strength spikes? Three is a very dangerous number, as it takes four spikes to turn into a Koloss. Does Saitaku know this, and does he appear koloss-esque in any way?

As for Chay Shan, I am slightly hesitant to approve that, as we really don't know all that much about the mechanics of it. And plus, the whole location thing isn't much of an issue, if you have read TLM (which you probably should if you're doing this RP, as all cosmere spoilers in regards to magic systems are allowed) you know why.

Oh, I see. Doesn't being returned give you a whole shape-shifting thing, though?

Maybe I'll stick to one. After all, I do really like my current character.

the thing to keep in mind about the merits system is that its a guide to ensure that people aren't accidentally building overpowered characters. The main issue with having overpowered characters is that its really hard to play them without making other players feel kind of worthless. If someone was roleplaying a thieving crew, for example, and you had a seeker, a coppercloud, a coinshot, and a mistborn, there would be a slight imbalance in who is going to be sent to do what. And if there was ever a physical confrontation that occurred, like if one member of the crew was secretly a mole for another crew, then they would feel a bit restricted by the fact that they're up against a mistborn. We want to make it feel like folks are on a relatively even playing field, as while some amount of variance in that isn't an issue, and it is completely okay to have an intentionally overpowered character (see my character, Perses), it requires a lot more effort to properly RP power differences.

In this case, a returned elsecaller is not going to be too out of place in comparison to a fourth ideal skybreaker, a fused, and an A-Tin F-Chromium super sleuth.

Perses, who has been around for a few eras now, is overpowered. However, I have about four years of Alleyverse experience, and am planning on using Perses as more of a helping role to move the plot along than a central role (unless it becomes otherwise needed that he is to be a big bad). I'm paying close attention to Perses' power as I roleplay, and am going to ensure that all interactions I have with people will make it so that they don't feel as though they are being backed into a corner, RP-wise. Thats a skill that comes with time, and something that I'm not going to assume that every newcomer to the Alleyverse has, as that can cause problems with things such as god modding and poor sportsmanship.

Sorry for the long winded response 😅. Hopefully my point got across, at least somewhat?

All the spikes are iron, yes. As for the 4 spikes, yes, he does know that, but thinks he can get around it with some clever placement (idk if he’ll be a koloss or not, I haven’t decided) he currently does not exhibit signs, though, he hasn’t had his 2nd and 3rd spikes for very long.

My understanding of TLM was that Purified Dor was hard to come buy, which is what he’d need. Ordninary Dor is still location based, so since the Alleyverse is far away from JinDo, ordinary Dor wouldn’t help him much. Am I wrong about how that works?

That makes a lot of sense, thanks!
