Long Game 109: The Lords of Luthadel

Let's do a reads list.

  • Penguin: Obviously evil. I don't need to really go into more detail here.
  • dplost: Almost totally inactive. I saw that they have logged on two hours ago, so hopefully we get more out of them. Leaning evil, just because I want activity.
  • Akmiko: Either she's been totally pocketed by Penguin, or she is on Penguin's team. Either way it doesn't look good for her. Leaning evil.
  • Booknewt: On the one hand, he was poke vote from Penguin on Day 1. However, I'm not sure that's very alignment indictative. Also voted on me, which is tainting my perception a little. Neutral read.
  • KSauce: They haven't been the most active player, and feel like they are going a bit under the radar. Something feels a little off, but I'm not sure what. Neutral read.
  • Hoid Slayer: My paranoia is getting to me. While I certainly appreciate their contributions, I'm worried they are deep wolfing. Neutral read.
  • RulerOfTheMists: I don't see any world where they are evil in an evil Penguin world. Is there logic sometimes questionable? Yes, but that doesn't make them evil. Village Read.

If I'm deepwolf, y'all are screwed 😋

It's actually kinda funny in the... seven? I'm pretty sure games I've played before this, I've only ever gotten exed once, and that was for a sudden rollover vote switch when I was village

I guess I just look innocent 😁

Edit:

Soooo I guess we’re just gonna run smoothly from here to rollover

Only people not voting for Penguin are Penguin and Akimiko (who are likely both elim) and dp who is inactive / could be third elim cause otherwise third elim has wised up, voted Penguin, and Akimiko just ain’t getting the hint

I don't care. Vote me out or don't. I'll probably die tonight anyways.

...

Why would you?

Also no one is proposing voting you out right now. We're just stating that some of your behavior (namely, your seeming refusal to vote Penguin despite being unable to express a clear reason why) reads as elim to us.

@TwinStorm Hoid's Essay #2:

Thought about skipping this one but don't like the idea of Akimiko with a roleblock after recent events

We'll see where things end up after this

Spoiler

My last essay was a critic of this game.

This essay is a critic of its players.

We have already established that SE is more than anything a game of chance. We ride our hopes on desperate reads that often have little standing, because we refuse to accept our powerlessness - and indeed, through practice and refinement, we have trained methods that sometimes do indeed yield, if not solid, then serviceable results.

Standard solving in SE - that is to say, meaningful motion in the game - follows a pattern:

1. Pressure is applied

2. Pressure is reacted to

3. Reaction is noted and analyzed

4. Pressure is adjusted as needed

This pattern is simple, yet beyond specific game mechanics (like the one that is presumably allowing us to execute an elim as I speak) is the only effective way of gathering information. And yet, there are many flaws in it that render the system far from perfect - often with a common root cause: player impatience or lack of completion.

Step one is easy to carry out - through poke votes, trains, and accusations left and right. And step two evolves naturally from there. It is step three where we get stuck so often, so terminally; because in our desperation, or our (honestly understandable) lack of time or commitment to the game, we give too much weight to the results from our target's reactions, forgetting the overall fragility of that data. And we often forget step 4, perhaps the most important step of all; we end up so stuck on steps two and three that we do not adjust pressure until our whims have been satisfied, and by then, it is often too late.

We will fail in C1. It is almost a certainty. There is hardly enough time to branch out and apply the pressure to make solid reads, and so we must work with what we have. TOW was hanged on a hand's worth of posts. Yet we cannot blame ourselves for his misexe.

We should blame ourselves for future ones.

Why do we only poke-vote on the first day? Presumably, it is because there is enough evidence to go on at that point to make meaningful moves. That could not be farther from the truth. Yes, some claims can be made. But pressure in the first cycle rarely reaches even half the suspects in question, and yet still little efforts are made to extend it. Every game, players thrive the entire extent without an ounce of pressure, while others are hammered into the ground until at last even the most loyal villager shows signs of strain. Even the most normal rock shatters under enough wait; even the most innocent witness will slip up if interrogated enough.

Time runs out, and so I must end this rant. I will not deny I am complicit in these flaws. For I am, as is everyone here.

Let us begin to fix them.

The sky was blood red as Lord Markus returned from his meeting with the King. Their talk had been simple, yet had left him unsatisfied. Although, back in the council, things seemed to be getting better. Dared he believe - dared he hope - in Lord Sart's claims? Something about them nagged at him, and yet his logical brain told him this was the right choice.

Yet he doubted.

Markus let out a long sigh as he settled down in his chambers, and gestured for a new bottle of wine. He would need it for what was to come.

Whatever was to come.

Well, this is splendid 😋

I think this might actually be the first time I exe an elim as a villager

This game is actually winnable

Sart is cleared village

Ruler is practically cleared village, and Akimiko is almost certainly elim

On that note: can we get someone to scan Aki tonight? Ideally, with PMs, we can also get someone to scan dp, but he’s lower priority. Maybe two people scanning Aki is best for insurance

I’m now faced with a dilemma as well; do I Guard myself, or do I roleblock Aki?

@TwinStorm@The Unknown Misting can more than one elim send in the NK?

Also, what Political Power placements did people get today? Maybe we can coordinate this here

The NK is sent in by 1 elim

Do we know how many people are elims.

If we assume that i and Sart are not guilty, the other three will still be annacounted for.

I don't think we do, but there are probably two more - all the games I've played have had 3 elims.

It's almost 100% 3

Two is way too easy for village, cause after a single slip-up like this, the remaining elim would now have to end up among the two last players, and if there were four elims we'd already have lost

Sadly, probably very little 😔

I don't know if we have any specs for this game so it's just been TOW and CD

Wait really?

Yup

And the only game I've played in which an elim has been exed before this was last one

Lord Sart stood on his balcony, and contemplated his death. He was old, so he had plenty of experience with this. However, tonight would be the closest he had been to death. He did not have the resources to protect himself, and so he was practically defenseless. Anyone could come in to his keep, and murder him while he waited. Yes, this was a precarious situation. Still, his mind relished the thrill of the moment. It was time to do a gambit. He dipped his quill into the ink well, and began to write.

@Akimikoisthecutest

"Lady Cricket, I have need of your services. If you are truly loyal to our cause, you understand the danger that I am in. No one now doubts that I am on the reformer's side. As I have already explained, I did not speak enough to protect myself. Instead, you have the power I require. I implore you to protect me. I am obviously the preferred target of any kill tonight. If you are good, you might very well save my life tonight. If you are evil, and choose to kill me instead of protect me, everyone would obviously assume you are a Final Empire Loyalist. The choice is yours, but I believe you will choose to make the right decision."

With the letter, delivered he drank another swig of wine. If he was truly to die tonight, he might as well enjoy his last night on Scadrial.

Sart's sacrifice would not be forgotten.

The message rang through Markus's head as he walked the streets of Luthadel at night. It was a quiet night, with the mists flowing in strength. Many feared them. But Markus did not. He feared no threat he could see with his own eyes.

Yet the threat that assaulted the Lords of Luthadel now was far from visible. It hid, and in its hiding it acted. It killed, and it took, and it ruined without recompense. With only a single cause. Most men would flee from such a threat, overwhelmed by fear. Markus was overwhelmed by fear. But he would not flee. He wanted to, yes. Almost constantly. It was the little voice, the speaker in his head that came when he took a swig too many, reminding him of his weakness. Fool, it called him. And indeed, Markus was a fool. He had been a fool when he fled from his family, lured by the lights of Luthadel's balls. They had warned him then. He had not heeded them, and he had lost. He had been a fool when he allowed Lyra, sweet, passionate Lyra, to slip from his fingers, scared of the judgement of the bastards he had begun to call peers. She had warned him. He had not heeded her, and he had lost. The Charming, they called him. Yet he had not been able to keep the one person who had truly mattered. He always lost. And the voice was always there. Now, those warnings came again. But he did not know where they pointed him. Was he to leave Luthadel, running as he should have done when Lyra begged him forth? Or was he to stay, stand his ground as he should have done when his family most needed him?

He did not know.

The only thing he did know was the every little voice, every warning in his head was telling him that he would lose. He hated it. Loathed it. And so the conviction grew in his heart to prove it wrong. He had failed his entire life.

He would not, could not, fail now.

For the court of elegant bastards that surrounded him.

For the passionate people whose lives he held in the palm of his hand.

For the rusting King who now held the power to fix the wrongs of the past.

For himself.

"Lord Sart, I would love to save a fellow Lord. I have already sent my personal guard over to you. I hope you find them accommodating."

Btw Hoid, would suggest you use your protect on yourself - my guess is that elims will view you as a prime target if Akimiko is in fact village bc Sart'd be the one being protected

Akimiko

For obvious reasons

So uhh where the actual heck is everybody?

  1. @Booknewt - Lord Renalis the Realistic
  2. @KaladinsSenseOfHumorSpren - Lord [insert name here], who is highly suspected of being a Kandra
  3. @dplostthegame

Did anyone scan Akimiko? What are the results of our actions?

Anybody?

I defended myself, for anyone curious

Sart, I threatened Akimiko so she'd protect you

You may have been willing to sacrifice your life, but I was not

@TwinStorm@The Unknown Misting are there any plans to swap out dp?
