It also wore fingerless gloves and spectacles, though it seemed to see fine without them. It wore a satchel that was rustling, as if something living was inside.

The more people are involved in something, especially in what’s basically a fetch quest, the more likely one of them is to be gone for weeks. 
Of course, that doesn’t mean the whole plot is dead - for instance, Rebus is now at that party, which has managed to remain active precisely because it has turned into a bunch of individual conversations.

We were actually discussing the reactivation of a different Thread, which in turn would eventually lead to the reactivation of this one (the plots have become entwined; it's complicated). 

Also I'm realising I've gotten to the point where I subconsciously capitalised thread.

I would like to note that the DOOR-WAY need not be limited to one storyline or thread. it connects to all doors, everywhere, everywhen. It actually got way more serious than I first imagined it, but that's okay.
