The Reputation System?

I know this has probably already been asked, but I was under the impression that when I liked a post, I gave the poster my own reputation? It sounds really dumb I know, but like for example, say I have 10 reputation and I like a post from somebody with 0 reputation. That person's reputation increases to 1,  and mine goes down to 9. Once again, it doesn't make much sense when I think about it, but I've been afraid to rep people for the past year or so because I thought that was the case.

No, it doesn't cost you anything. You have X amount of reputation every day, and you can give that away for free. It's just liking a post.

That's the thing, I don't know where I got that idea from  but the "X reputation every day" is interesting. What determines how much rep you get to spend each day?

I have no clue. It supposedly resets every day, but I'm not really sure when. I've had two day periods when I'm blocked. Beyond me

I didn't know there was an artificial limit, but I think you're only supposed to give 15.

Note: the "20 per 24hrs" is a rolling limit, if you Rep 5 times around 8 am local - go to work - come home and exhaust your limit before bed - then you will only have 5 available the next morning (not 6+) even though it is "the next day" - because this is a global community and rolling coverage is more equitable than some arbitrary time-zone reset.
