Sythrin Posted May 10, 2025 Posted May 10, 2025 Can Kandra take over the skelet of a Singer and put a spren inside their gemheart? If you would capture an Ancient one inside a perfect Gemheart and put it inside an Illuminium coated Vaccuum tube, would the investiture be cleansed like how they did with Stormlight in the Tower? If yes, what would happen if a Singer bonds with that Ancient one than? Would they get the powers of the ancient one without loosing their personalities? Would the same happen to spren from forms of power, like Stormspren? Do you think it likes in the realm of possiblity that in the future, humans somehow manage to implement a gemhearts inside them, ever through hemalurgy or some form of surgery and thereby get forms of power too? 1

They would not "have" a gemheart because a Skeleton is, to a Kandra, like clothes (something they wear, not something that is a part of their Identity). They could consume a Singer in a form and mimic that form, but it would not have a Spren Bond "powering" it (looks, but not ability). The gemheart in a Singer is part of the Sternum. A very Realmatically aware may be able to realize that, instead of using the Singer gemheart, they may be able to get a similar effect using True Bones for a similar effect. WoBs: Spoiler Quote Questioner If a kandra were a Parshendi, would he be able to take the forms? Brandon Sanderson The Forms? The actual-- To an extent, yes. To an extent, yes, but part of that is the spren bond. You're not gonna get everything. You could look like one, but there'll be certain things you won't be able to do, even with the Form. You couldn't take a form of power... You could pass. Oathbringer Portland signing (Nov. 16, 2017) Quote Questioner I was wondering, in Stormlight, what kind of gem the [singer] gemhearts were, or do they just, do they hold Stormlight well? Brandon Sanderson So, this is a good question. This is one that people have been asking me since the first book, if they had one, and I've finally kind of confirmed it in book three. So the reason people don't think [singers] have a gemheart is it is milky white, and looks like bone. Questioner But aren't their bones red? Brandon Sanderson Their bones, well-- Their bones are red-- not completely. If you're going to pull out the bone, what you're going to see-- I'll explain it in the next book. So what you're going to do is, if you break open the bone, you're going to find this white-- It's not marrow but it is, yeah I guess it's marrow. Anyway at the center kind of in their sternum there is a gemheart there, but it is fused to the bone and it is grown into the bone, and you have to kind of snap it open and find it inside, and it kind of just looks like marrow, but there's a gemheart in there. And it kind of relates to some stuff in Dragonsteel that I'm not gonna get into. But you'll see in the next books. But there's a good reason people just don't think that [singers] have a gemheart. Questioner So they must not glow much then, I'm assuming. Brandon Sanderson Yeah, well, it's surrounded by bone. So it's a different special thing. We'll bring it out in the following books. It might not be the next one. Emerald City Comic Con 2018 (March 1, 2018) Quote NeedsAdjustment Would a kandra be able to imitate a chasmfiend, given enough time? Brandon Sanderson It's not about time, it's about mass. A little one, sure. A full grown one? They'd crush themselves. They'd need to be able to make use of symbiotic spren bonds from Roshar, which isn't just a matter of digesting a body. Stormlight Three Update #4 (Oct. 5, 2016) Quote Ok-Row1050 If a kandra with a crystal True Body made their way to Roshar, could they use their crystal bones like a gemheart? Brandon Sanderson Yes, they could. That is an excellent question. I think you mean "perfect Gem" (there are no perfect gemhearts, as they are partially organic), and you likewise probably mean aluminum. Based on those assumptions: The Stormlight/Voidlight were not "cleansed" - they were stripped of Identity - temporarily; and that would not apply to a Fused in a Perfect Gemstone (with or without aluminum or a Vacuum chamber) because a Fused's identity is part of their being, not inherited by hearing the tones of Roshar the way Light does. Spoiler Quote Questioner We know that finer gemstones like the King's Drop can hold Stormlight longer and encases other things that I won't say because of spoilers. Is that because of the craftsmanship, connecting their Identity in the Cognitive Realm? Brandon Sanderson Excellent question. "You can hold Stormlight in gemstones, and the more perfect a gemstone the more Stormlight it'll hold. Is the craftsmanship required to create it part of the reason why?" And no, it's actually the crystalline structure. Fewer flaws in the crystalline structure means fewer places for the Stormlight to wiggle out. Questioner Do gemstones exist naturally on Roshar? Or are they all gemhearts? Brandon Sanderson Yes, but you gotta dig through lots of layers of cremstone to get to them, so most of the time you're getting them from gemhearts. New York Comic Con 2022 (Oct. 8, 2022) Quote Fantastic-Eggplant-9 It's stated that the Fused can hold Voidlight nearly indefinitely. Does this mean their gemhearts are perfect gems? Brandon Sanderson So, kind of. It does not necessarily mean that, how about that. But a similar mechanic is happening. Fantastic-Eggplant-9 Is this why they are so strict with how they handle their dead? Brandon Sanderson It is part of why. You are picking up on the right foreshadowing that I have seeded into the books. YouTube Spoiler Stream 4 (June 16, 2022) Quote Questioner Where do gemhearts come from? Brandon Sanderson They grow naturally, just like your fingernails grow. Questioner Where do they get the resources? Brandon Sanderson The rain that falls on Roshar is [hard] water, full of crem that crystalizes. If you drink that water, it gives you the nutrients that you need to make gemhearts. Starsight Release Party (Nov. 26, 2019) Quote TheFulgid Where do gemstones come from? Brandon Sanderson Gemstones on Roshar are mostly coming from gemhearts. And, I remembered to stick in some mentions of this in Oathbringer, 'cause a lot of people have been asking about this. It's not something-- like, the daily ranching of animals for their gemhearts is not something that we bring up a lot, but there is some limited mining operations on Roshar as well, you've just gotta get through the crem. Oathbringer release party (Nov. 13, 2017) 4 hours ago, Sythrin said: what would happen if a Singer bonds with that Ancient one then? The same thing that happens when any Fused resides in a singer gemheart and bonds the body - the singer's soul is ejected and dies; that's why they are called Fused (ancient soul fused to new body). 4 hours ago, Sythrin said: Do you think it likes in the realm of possiblity that in the future, humans somehow manage to implement a gemhearts inside them, ever through hemalurgy or some form of surgery and thereby get forms of power too? Depends, do you consider Herdazians and Unkalaki to be Human? They both have vestigal Gemhearts (which is implied to be part of why Rock and Cord can see Spren, their Gemheart has a bond). In theory, Hemalurgy could also bridge the gap. Spoiler Quote Snipexe Could you spike the ability to grow a gemheart out of a singer? Brandon Sanderson Yes, I think you could. Yeah.
