CoderDrag0n8 He/They Posted March 16, 2025 Posted March 16, 2025 I haven't read Warbreaker, so that might be a source of much confusion for me, but I do know that Breaths and Nightblood and a few other things are from it, so I'm not asking questions about them. Instead, I am confused about Wit and Dragons. As you might notice from my signature, I really like dragons. So it was of no suprise that when Wit said some stuff about talking to dragons, my reaction was: "DRAGONS! YES YES YES! I THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT FOR EMBERDARK FOR A DRAGON REFRENCE!" as I silently added 'Wind and Truth' to my Books That Talk About Dragons In The Cosmere list in my head. By the time the epilogue came around, and Wit used bones too look into the world of the dragons or whatever, I was like, Wait. I read all the cosmere (Except for Warbreaker) Did I miss something? Is this the first introduction of bones and dragons in the cosmere? Or is this from Warbreaker? Could someone please explain? 1

The primary reference for most of this is the Non-Canon Dragonsteel Prime. But, if you have read everything Cosmere except Warbreaker, you should have already seen a dragon in-story (Tress of the Emerald Sea). Also, Cultivation's Vessel was a Dragon before taking up a Shard; and some of the Epigraph Letters are from a Dragon (Frost). Dragon WoBs (excerpts below) Spoiler Quote Feifner Do you think you will ever include dragons in your books? Brandon Sanderson Dragonsteel, a series I’ll do someday, has Dragons in it. Hint: This world/series is very important to Hoid.. #tweettheauthor 2009 (July 8, 2009) Quote Questioner Do we have yet to see a dragon from you? I was wondering if those were coming later. Brandon Sanderson I did put, one of my world has Dragons. Questioner Is that Dragonsteel? Brandon Sanderson Yes it is! Salt Lake City signing (March 29, 2014) Quote Blightsong Are sandlings from White Sand an early concept for crustaceans on Roshar, with greatshells being a parallel to deep sandlings? Brandon Sanderson No, um, the idea for white sandWhite Sand came first, and it was more that I was exploring divergent ecology, but I've been doing that in Dragonsteel and in White Sand and in here with Roshar. I would say that the fact that white sand hadn't been published meant that I could do something's that were similar without worrying about repeating myself, but it's not like I used them specifically as models. Blightsong *jokingly* So are we going to get to see little dragons running around in Dragonsteel? Brandon Sanderson Uh, well, in Dragonsteel the dragons are sapient, so when I write Dragonsteel I will put dragons in there, but the dragons are intelligent and uh, can take human form, but there are actual little dragons. Blightsong Wait, they can take human form? Brandon Sanderson Yes, yes, yup. OdysseyCon 2016 (April 8, 2016) Quote Questioner The second question is about dragons! One race, on Yolen, are dragons with the ability to shift. I'm positively sure that we haven't seen any dragons in dragon form around yet. How about in human form, and would it be possible to actually recognize a human dragon? Brandon Sanderson So, the question is, I haven't written the book yet, but one of the books I've talked about that is the origin of all of this is called Dragonsteel, and there are dragons in it! 'Cause, like I said, 'Why not? Why wouldn't you?' And she's asking about Dragonsteel. Have we seen dragons hidden among the characters in the books that we have seen. You have very likely seen - Questioner A letter. Brandon Sanderson Yes, you have seen a letter from a dragon. And you... there are some that are off-world, and so you might have seen them. I won't tell you for sure, but you would not recognize them. Leipzig Book Fair (March 24, 2017) Quote Questioner (paraphrased) Regarding a certain dragon mentioned in Stormlight Archive, and dragons in general in the cosmere: is functional immortality a natural part of a dragon's lifespan? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) The way I have written dragons in the cosmere… ALL dragons are naturally functionally immortal. They can be killed, but they don't age. Supanova 2017 - Sydney (June 16, 2017) Quote Questioner What are dragons like? Brandon Sanderson In the Cosmere? They are sneaky and long-lived. Questioner 2 Will they have wings? Brandon Sanderson They do have wings, depending on what form they're in. They are natural shapeshifters. Questioner Are they Cognitive Shadows or are they people? Brandon Sanderson They are people. FanX 2021 (Sept. 16, 2021) Quote Comatose Can we confirm that Xisis is "Foil," and do all dragons have a nickname? Brandon Sanderson Yes, all dragons have a nickname. It's very common. And you are allowed to confirm that. Shardcast Interview (July 30, 2023) Very slight Warbreaker Spoiler: Spoiler Russ LeBar Is "dragon's nest" a Nalthis to English translation or are dragons part of their culture? Is Edgli a dragon? Peter Ahlstrom I don't know the answer to that. Brandon Sanderson Dragons are mythological on Nalthis, but there is a reason that the stories exist. It's not a translation quirk.
