She nodded a little.

Elan confirmed. “She’s had time to rest. Having other things to think about helps.”

Insa nodded slowly. "Okay. I believe you."

She sighed, "If it's still alright, I'd still like to take a look, make sure nothing is truly wrong in the normal way or the magical way. And then I know some more natural painkillers that exist here, or I can get you some more Earth-like painkillers. Whichever you would like."

... I don't know where I'm looking. I don't actually know where she was stabbed.

Insa moved closer. "Alright then, show me."

Elan turned away, and Aventine carefully lifted the hem of her shirt, showing nothing above the rib cage. There was a single, faint scar under her xyphoid process.

Insa glanced over it. "Same spot five times? Anything about it looks different to you?"

“No, it was a few spots. Lerac took most of them away.”

Insa frowned. "Why did he leave one?"

“I willed one to stay. So I’d remember.”

Insa nodded very slowly.

"Well, I don't see anything too off with it. But you may know better if something appears off."

She nodded and lowered her shirt, taking another drink of water. Elan turned back.

"Would you like any painkillers of any sort?"

“No. It wasn’t exactly physical pain. More like a ghost-pain. A memory of pain.”

Insa nodded. "Fair enough. But if anything changes or happens, it would be wise not to keep it to yourself."

Insa looked over Elan and Aventine. "I'm curious, what else has happened while you two have been at the Clinic?"

“Well, that was the second time that group held us. Um, she fought several Steel Inquisitors. She almost had her body possessed, but I prevented it…”

”I was almost stoned to death by a village who feared magic.”

Elan jumped at that. “Really?”

”Yeah.”

“Tal’s home world.”

Insa nodded slowly. "Y'all have been through a lot. Didn't you go with Bookwyrm to help Thaidakar at some point too?"

“Yeah,” Elan answered. “I don’t think that one ended up with any lasting trauma, though.”

She looked down for a moment, trying to hide her confusion. Her mind was racing through her memory. Saar had pretty much told her they had died. Clearly, that was false. But to some extent, she had believed that it was just a twisted truth. No lasting trauma didn't imply that.

When she spoke, it was quiet. "Someone tried to tell me you all died or, at the very least, disappeared with no real hope of return."

I said no such thing.

It was heavily, heavily implied.

“Well, we were in a void between worlds. Compared to some other stuff that’s happened, that was a walk in the park!”

Aventine quietly countered, “Didn’t you lose control of your body to the Being?”

Elan blinked. “Huh. Yeah, I guess I did. But that won’t be a problem again, and I ended up fine.”

Insa nodded. "But you weren't ever like dead or lost without any feasible way back?"

Insa. Stop. I was acting in your best interest.

That's what you always say.

Cause it's always true, my dear.

Elan thought a moment. “I mean, technically I died, and Ave almost ran away, but we both bounced back, clearly!”

Insa nodded slowly.

So you lied.

Are you listening to them? He said he died. I was right! It was the truth.

You know full well that you weren't talking about him.

Okay fine. But this time I'm telling the truth!

Too late. The trust is gone.

Insa searched through her mind. Gently examining connections. They had been built over time. To people, things, and gods. It took her a moment, but she found the right thread. It looked worn. Like something that had been used far too often. It had clearly been cut and knotted back together several times.

I'm done Saar. You've lost the privilege.

You forget, you can cut the connection there, but I still have an in. I can make you feel pain like you've never felt it before, remember? I still have you.

No, you don't, and you won't. I have some things to take care of here first. But then I'll take care of you.

And with that, she cut the thread.

"I'm glad." She smiled. "We should get going. We've got some stuff to take care of."
