Cool!

This project is gonna get a plot eventually. But I wanna flesh out the worldbuilding first. (EDIT - Plot has arrived)

So

The first vestiges of this idea were actually formed a loooonnng time ago

My second ever writing attempt. (The first is… I mean, I don’t even want to revisit that one.)

The project got to a good amount of pages, but it wasn’t very good.

But I still liked it.

I’ve wanted to revisit it for a while.

So

Like

I got rid of most of that idea for this… but it was all the baaaad stuff. The idea I really liked was my villain, Talaman. Some other aspects, though, are preserved in The Illuminated - which I haven’t given up on! Don’t worry.

Talaman, I realized, is a hive mind villain.

I had another hive mind villain, much more recently, known as The Constant  ( @Dragonheir interacted with that idea.)

The Constant, also called the Eternal King, was another idea I had trouble finding a place for. (Poor Adtae…)

So I decided…

Why not make the Eternal Kingdom evil, and put it into an eternal war with Talaman? (I found a title for him… I wanted to use chains in it, but this is better. “Binder of Souls”)

Those people are in a war now

Except

The primary magic system, something completely new, is Rending - more on that later.

It plays a role, but imma divide my updates on this into two parts, the Magic, and the Worldbuilding - which are interrelated.

My plan is to have freakish Worldbuilding eventually, but it is very empty rn.

WB:

Spoiler

Kind of empty right now - at least the beginning.

But

There is a supercontinent, in which stuff happens. There are deity like beings that have set powers. (This is the unfleshed out part.)

Talaman and The Eternal Kingdom emerge through some power - tbd.

Their war is very bad, and it is very destructive, so people step in and stop them - the Renders.

(But of background on the Renders - context - they are immune to the mind control/blessings of Talaman and the immortality of the Eternal Kingdom, and they can kill those from the Eternal Kingdom. They were neutral in this conflict until now.)

The First Render (one of the deities), name TBD, saw the death and the destruction and decided to impose their own justice on the world for this war, and “The Great Rending” transpired. Essentially, it split the supercontinent with non traversable gaps of Rending - those do have importance other than being there, but that will be covered in the magic. But now, armies of the Hive Minds (not an official term, just how I think of them.) are split - they have no contact with the others of the Hive.

This has different effects depending on the hive…

For the Eternal Kingdom, the soldiers have a weak link to those up the chain (although chain is a strange term… heheheheh) so they establish their own, smaller kingdoms within their continents.

For the Binder of Souls, this hive takes direct orders from Talaman - except he has to give them the orders audibly, he can’t just think them. So since they are permanently separated from him, their continents become seemingly lifeless, the Thrall (that’s what they do be called) sitting there, not aging, doing nothing. However, their previous orders still stand, and they attack any life they sense.

A third type will be the continents that were the fronts of war - still locked in eternal combat.

Finally, there are the continents that escaped the war, either Renders were able to kill the hive on their continent, or there were few enough that the people were able to capture them and push them into the gaps.

That’s about the extent right now, but I am going to individually worldbuild each of the continents, as well as the history b4 the Great Rending.

M:

Spoiler

Magics…

This ‘ere spot don’t have much rn, but I’ll do my best to make what little I have seen like a lot.

There are the deities - they have their own magics, but most keep their magic to themselves.

The exception to this is the First Render, and whichever deity blessed the Eternal King and the Binder of souls. (I’ve been thinking something along the lines of smt to do with discord or war).

The First Render the only deity that ever gave their powers to mortals. The powers, although destructive, were used for good by the people the First Render chose, a very rare selection. Before I can continue with this thread (and get to when it turns dark), I need to explain some of the mechanics of Rending.

Rending channels destructive power to shatter things - form cracks throughout. The power is channeled through a focus, which can be whatever, but some are better than others. The best focus is the Render’s own body, although this is dangerous for various reasons.

When a Render uses their powers, they touch the focus to something and Rend that something. However, the amount they can Rend is dependent on the strength of the focus, as the focus will be Rended along with the target (the rate of this Rending being directly related to the rate at which they want to Rend the target) - and once it is broken, it cannot be used. Stronger focuses Rend slower, the strength depending on a tbd factor.

There is more, but that comes later.

Now that those mechanics are explained, I can explain the Great Rending. As stated b4, the First Render Rended the world, using their own body as the focus. They died in the process, leaving Rending a magic no longer overseen by the First Render. And so, after this, Rending was bestowed by some other process (I have ideas, but not too concrete). By this, Rending is going to be used by the less… moral peoples.

Ok. Had to stop for dinner, so I lost my train of thought somewhere in Australia.

Uuuuuhhhhhhh

Oh yea

Importance of the yet-to-be named gaps between the continents.

They are magic, and the space between is, not filled, but… occupied? Not sure… the stuff doesn’t fill it to the brim. There is Rending stuff in between the continents.

The “Rending stuff” is important.

When ya Rend something, Rending monstahs appear in the “Rending Stuff”, ya know? And if it is small things, the monsters are also small - taking the form of germs. These germs cause what is called “Rending Sickness”, which can take various forms. (Yes, the comma does go there. I just makes more sense.)

So that’s a thing

Ya know?

And then

If there are biiiig Rendings, like the Great Rending, then it spawns biiiig monstahs, as well as anything in smoller. So this is the origins of Rending monsters, which come from these.

Soooooo…. Yea.

This was fun to creatifyishyanatationingle.

Imma be placing more as this evolves

Officially created a section of my shool folder for this!

Made major Worldbuilding Steps

Spoiler

Some major creation power spawns two deities,

Aeia, the Duchess of Light,

and

Keylana, the Shadow of Creation

Both are not so good, but Aeia pretends to be very good and demonizes Keylana, so the entire world hates what they believe to be the Shadows.

Aeia tells them common folk that if they were devoted to her, she would bless them. To support this, she makes the Blessed Immortals, false demigods that help uphold the vision of her perfection. The people, suffice it to say, take this, and are loyal to her. And her only, ya know?

Hmmm

So

The people now

Taking advantage of this zealoutry, Aeia sets up evil beings,  giving power to those that are loyal to her (this is a bit convoluted but not really) so that they will pretend to work for Keylana, giving the people a face for the enemy, if you will. These people, fire demigods, are called the “Corrupted Lights” (well, those are the main ones, led by Kilad.)

She also sets up The Judge and The Healer as good people, and later on establishes the Eternal Kingdom, and this is created after the creation of Rending, whilst it is still a new art, and before Renders gain ground in the battle - they are immune to the Rending Sickness… (uuuhhhhh there was a better reason, but I didn’t write it down for some reason. *sigh* I’ll remember eventually)

At around the same time she set up the Eternal Kingdom, she created Talaman, the Binder of Souls, and said that it was Keylana that created him.

On the other side of things, Keylana did little. There is a reason, and I should explain that.

Aeia endlessly manipulated her, and she lost her confidence in her allbilities. Ya?

What she did do is place a portion of her power into another, Adtae, and he did stuff.

There was also other stuff she did, but that is also tbd.

Some person, reason tbd, approached Keylana’s lair, and confronted her for her inactivity whilst Aeia demonized her. She challenged him to do better than her, and gave him all her power. He became the First Render.

So he slowly gain presence, building an empire, ya?

But

then the conflict between EK and TtBoS breaks out, and he decides to intervene. This results in the Great Rending.

I also made a preRending map.

Posted

Update three!

Worldbuilding and a sprinkle of magic.

WB

Spoiler

Detailed a (preRending) map, which is in my backpack right now. Established borders and such.

The Land of Light (rough name, subject to change) is divided into six districts ‘n’ stuff. Not actually called districts, filler name.

District 1:

Spoiler

Military region, on the edge of the map, bordering the Kilad dissenters and army.

Person (I wrote the names, but forgot. I have their titles) The Warrior oversees this district, and grants soldiers magic.

This one is focused solely on combat.

District 2:

Spoiler

Military region, bordering the Kilad dissenters as well.

Person, the General oversees this region, and is in charge of strategic planning and such (handling supply), as well as leads a school/university to this effect. Grants magic from both D1 and D3 to train Knights.

District 3:

Spoiler

Military-ish region, as well as trade. Borders the Kilad, but also the Eternal Kingdom, an ally.

Person, the Monk, oversees this region, in charge of wartime supply distribution. Trades with EK as well as gets supplies from D4. The people can become soldiers, and most do, but some become farmers.

Magic.

District 4:

Spoiler

Agricultural Region, bordering EK.

Focuses on plant growth, led by Waela (this one I remember) the Healer.

Magic

District 5:

Spoiler

Fine Arts, sciences, etc.

University of Light (and or Truth)

Led by Person, the Painter, who oversees education’n’stuff.

Magic

District 6:

Spoiler

The CAPITAL!

Borders every district

Overseen by Aeia herself, as well as Stil, the Judge. They do government stuffs.

ya

So

There’s that

But no magic here.

I also worked on the Kilad Dissenters, but didn’t make much progress.

There are people called the Lights of Doom that enforce Kilad’s reign.

Yea

Magic:

Spoiler

D1: Strength increasing magic, these peoples have glowing eyes

D2: D1+D3

D3: Speed increasing magic, these people have a glow round them, like an afterimage

D4: Healing and crop growth. Subjects of their magic glow briefly.

D5: Creation magic. I need to flesh this one out :)

Kilad: Fire magic, a shadow follows the fire.

Yall, I wish for feedback 🤪

This is really cool. I always love to see world building projects, especially magic systems. I can advise on magic systems if you’re looking for that. Not so much on the political stuff or anything unless you have super specific questions. Deities and magic are my focus so I love what you’re doing here and look forward to seeing more.

I think, right now, I gots a good idea of the preRending situation, so now to find out what happened the 1000 years AFTER

Ehehe

I have ideas

How does culture and magic interact? Especially the healing magic - how do people feel about that obligation-wise?

WB:

Spoiler

Ok, so in D1 the people are almost all drafted, so if you run into someone, it’s usually one unfit to be drafted (if they are smart, they would be sent to D2), so the culture there would probably be some form of rudimentary art. This one specifically would be important, actually.

D2, the culture is more competitive, where people must prove themselves. They can become Knights (D1+3 magic), which is the main goal, tho a select few become generals. This place would be the place I insert a game like chess.

D3, these people will be… hmm… on one hand they handle trade, but they are still one of the wartime districts, sooooo… their society would be one of cutthroat trade. Loyal, tho. Like, we need this, if you can’t supply it, too bad, we shan’t do business with you. However, the do still train soldier, Monks, that will be sent to the warfront. It’s kinda difficult to balance this due to the size of the districts (really freaking large) (Brazil wud be the size of D6… around.). So imma probably need to tweak some things, but it makes sense that D4 would be able to supply the necessary food because of their magic. But, rant aside, the culture of this place would perhaps be similar to… maybe the Aztecs? Like, they did trade, but they were also a conquering empire. I’ll have to look into this.

D4: So… farmers. They do farming, and they do healing. Occasionally, they would send a few healers over to the warfront, but they are mostly used to provide food. They are seen as the most holy district other than 6, because they are giving everything to everyone, ya know? They have close ties to D3, but their leader would be the Healer, one of the original Blessed Immortals, who is viewed with respect among all, ya know? But the uuuhhhh… obligations… hhmmm… is that like, obligation to religion or to war? Cuz with religion, they believe that the healing and creation is divinely granted, and as such should be treated with respect, no frivolity. The farmers are relatively rare, ya know? Cuz they are handpicked by Waela. Obligation to war… a few of em are sent, but the farmers are a) no combat experience, and b) they are extremely essential to the supplies of the entire empire.

D5, this one… I need to work on this one. Their culture has lots of art. Not sure which style(s), but Art is there. Ya. The people see themselves as being closest to the reality of Aeia, even though… no. Many universities across. Crap. Idea. They prob also supply stone and extraction resources, as there is no other District suitable to this, while they can just… create it.

D6, the CAPITAL! This is by far the most population dense district, overseen directly by Aeia. A great number of them have seen Aeia in person, even taking into regard the size of the district. This is also where justice is carried out, almost always execution, as mandated by Aeia. This no mercy thing suggests a cruel people… hhhmmmm

The Eternal Kingdom: don’t actually have much on this - most of the development will be after the Rending bc of its nature. But I doooo know that, strangely, crime is easier to carry out here, because Eternal Citizens of a lower link kinda have a sense for everyone above them. I’ll explain this in more detail, I just realized I haven’t.

M:

Spoiler

Eternal Kingdom Peoples: They are a hive mind of sorts…

Soooo

It started with one person, the Eternal King, one who was actually ignorant of Aeia’s evil, ya know?

But the hive mind can spread from person to person like an infection, though a bit different.

Say Person A infected Person B. B would get the entire package, the power (inability to die), and the mind. The new mind doesn’t necessarily take over, and when it enters person B, it like… shoving clay into a mold. It keeps clays properties, but it shifts to match the mold. So with every infection, it becomes slightly different, like strains of a disease taken way to far.

Person B would be able to sense and feel Person A through the link, but Person A would not be able to sense or feel Person B.

OKAY OKAY OKAY

IVE CANONIZED IT

AHAHAHAHAA

Spoiler

Dint opened the grandly decorated door, stepping into a large chamber with a mural opposite the door. Leading up to the mural, and a large basin set on a table, were rows of seats, in which a few people sat. A purple carpet with a golden trim ran across the room, and windows of stained glass lined the walls.

And then there was the mural. A symbol not many had time for, a symbol not many observed. It depicted a person in dark clothing, a glowing crown of gold and sapphire. Shadowy energy flowed from him, shown as lines of greys and blacks which extended from the man into the ground. As well as these shadows, however, streaks of red poured from him, soaking the ground. Two other figures, one of stark light and one of stark darkness, were also depicted in the mural. The Twins, they were called. Aeia, Duchess of Light, and [I forgot this one… I’ll have to check],  Shadow of Creation, facing against each other as a rift opened between them.

The man had no name. He was merely known as the Render. The event was known as the Rending, an end to the eternal battle between the Twins, and the birth of planets.

Dint had never really observed religion. Life as a soldier wouldn’t allow it, as the constant migration prevented any Priests from setting up in their camp. But he had heard of it. A few soldiers that had been drafted later in their life observed on their own, but he never joined them.

He knew the movements, though. He had, as a child, made a point of learning it to spite his unbelieving parents.

He stepped through the pew, quietly approaching the bowl and taking hold of a small knife placed to the side of the dark, wooden vessel. He held his hand over the basin and made a shallow cut on his palm, letting the blood drop into the basin. The blood met a small amount in the bottom, ripples forming as the droplets disturbed the liquid. It was a symbolic action, meant to represent the Render’s self-sacrifice. The priests taught that through this, the Render would help resolve internal conflicts, bring peace to one’s life.

He hadn’t believed before. But… his life seemed to have upended itself. He had been confused recently, and there was a… peace… to those who observed these practices.

Setting the knife down, he took a seat among the pew, holding his head with his hands as he considered. Pyk, Kintlen… they were calling for him to help him. Pyk… he knew Pyk. He trusted Pyk. But Kintlen’s arguments and ideas just made sense.

He waited, hoping for… something. Some sort of divine clarity, a miraculous solution.

Nothing came.

A person sat next to him. A woman with a blindfold, her movements much more measured than they should have been; Dint had always assumed the blindfolds to be partially transparent. A Priest.

“You saved my brother, that day.”

Dint frowned, unsure how to reply.

“It was… a regrettable incident. Too many deaths.”

He found himself nodding.

“I… I guess it’s selfish, to regret these deaths. So many other people die every day in places less fortunate.”

She was quiet. Dint nodded, and started to excuse himself. Her hand shot up, catching his arm. “Wait! I…”

She bit her lip, her blindfolded face cast downwards. “I need to thank you, for what you did. You saved my brother… We are so much more fortunate than others. Thank you.”

She let go of his arm, and Dint stood, walking away in a slightly hurried pace.

Okay guys

Ive added another magical era…

0) Magic of a singular deity, the Embers and Ashes.

1) Magic of Aeia and Keylana.

2) The Rending

3) Magic of the Adari v Ichor, dragons

4) Magic of the Adari v Ichor, galactic war

5) Magic of the Adari v Ichor, societal collapse (due to Undead Vessels) and back to medieval times (at least where the focus is.)

6) The Great Spirits, the Ashes are locked away, and only the Embers fuel the magic (for now)

7) TBD!

(IT NEVER ENDS)

BTW, Ashes and Embers are a magic system I’ve just barely thought of, not sure how twould work yet. But they come from a single deity, and Aeia and Keylana somehow channel power from them - Aeia Embers, Keylana Ashes. Embers focus of creation, Ashes focus on destruction.

Suggestion for the focus, what if the strength of the focus is dependent on its own fragility? Like obsidian/glass is stronger than metals? So glass focuses are really concentrated, but can only be used like once or twice, while metal focuses are a lot weaker, but can withstand more uses. This could create sort of a system based around your access to a supply of expendable focuses, versus mass produced, cheaper focuses?
And uhhh extra idea, gemstones, because fantasy magic always needs gemstones. A focus w/ a gem is stronger, or as strong, as a glass one, but can last longer. So it can Rend like 5-6 times, and can Rend well. But they're expensive and rare, mayyyybe only available in the big continental cracks?? idk this is really cool concept and I enjoy thinking about it

Also I think I got myself confused, what's the nation situation like. Aeia made Talaman and EK, right? Did she put them against each other in the original war? But Keylana made the First Render to put a stop to the fighting, so now they're allied against the dissenters, and Aeia is cool with that? And the district stuff is TtBoS stuff? whaat

My ideas on this have been constantly evolving…

hehehehe

Okokok

So, stuff up there may be waaay outdated

Kilad was created by Aeia to act as like, a bug light that would pull those who would betray Aeia away from Keylana.

She recently made Talaman conveniently right in front of where the Render originated to make it extra difficult to join the Render.

Keylana - she didn’t make the First Render. Tel (his name, don’t know if I specified it here) was a squire-ish  of Kilad before he became the Render, which is when he got it in his mind that he should just… kill Keylana.

He failed - and Keylana was slightly outraged that he would question her, but more than half corrupted by the “real bad guy” (The Slumber), which induces a trance/sleep like state on the victim. Sooo… she wasn’t able to make decisions or think, and she was like - “you try to do better” and she shoved the power at him while she slowly died.

Basically everyone attacks the Renders, whether it be Aeia’s official forces, or Kilad and Talaman (Those two also fight.)

Aaannd…I don’t know the acronym?

Okok

It’s mostly accurate.

Dissenters: They fight everyone - including TtBoS. Their purpose is just to attract anyone who might turn to the shadow. Talaman actually emerged within their land, but soon spread all the way around Keylana’s lair in order to attempt to cut the Renders off. These guys are also fighting everyone - Aeia uses them to point out the senseless chaos that Keylana represents. The EK is trading with the Districts, and fighting everyone else (However, they aren’t adjacent to the Renders, so they can’t really fight em). The Districts fight Kilad, but are adjacent to Talaman or the Renders.

The Renders… they fight if fought. They are peaceful until attacked.

And what happens with Keylana…

Ok

Important note:

Aeia and Keylana are deities whose power was taken from a single individual - the Flame. This individual was the God of Chaos, but also benevolent. So Aeia, even though she can hold in the pure chaos of her power, her plots, her actions, they’re gonna spill over, tend to be overpacked, over exaggerated and over grown. Keylana, she has power from the Flame too, buuuuut…

Okokok

So

The Flame, before he “died”, was corrupted by the Slumber - which isn’t even sentient. The Slumber is just… an end. Keylana’s power, the “Ash” is destruction, but it doesn’t mean things stop happening - destruction is a change. I think I describe the Slumber as “The End of Endings” somewhere.

This corruption led to the Flame being nearly helpless - but it was specifically the Ash side of his power that was corrupted. So when Aeia took the “Ember”, she was free to be completely utterly chaotic. Keylana… was not.

So you’ll understand more, but the majority of Pyk’s stuff is the era right after this.
