I like needing an intricate knowledge of what you’re trying to do. Weakening the strong force is probably not allowed, though. Maybe you’re not allowed to know particle physics without intensive screening, because you can use it to make atoms explode.

I've always thought power over the strong and weak forces would be OP now I have a chance to use it 😈

So like if you wanted mind control you'd have to have an actual understanding of psychology and stuff?

Like magic can affect pretty much all things as long as you understand how they work and what you're doing?

And if you do too much it won't work/it'll be harder?

Yes, though I suspect mind control would very difficult, since humans are so odd. Big mood swings would be easier, by effecting neurotransmitter take up.

Mhhh good point. Maybe there's a group of mages who are constantly believing that atoms stay together, and by their collective will and power, splitting the atom is so much harder than it would be normally.

That's a thought. Trying to undo a spell by another wizard?

I think I like this take on "classical" magic.

TW: gore

Spoiler

That way some squire that knows how to magically patch up knife cuts can't save a dire wolf that's being crucified with its own intestines by spamming/empowering/upcasting said magic "patch up knife cuts" spell, or at least, it is more likely to cause more harm than if a proper healer were to mend; the squire likely doesn't know what a dire wolf's insides are supposed to look like, nor does he have the knowledge to recreate something as complex as the guts of an (soon to be) extinct wolf species, or if he does, most likely he lacks the required flesh to do so, or may mess up.

That’s a good idea. Perhaps we should have some sort of cost to magic, maybe just exhaustion but potentially something worse, and the two people conflicting both run through that reserve until one runs out or stops.

yeah, that seems balanced.

We could do backlash? Like, yes exhaustion, but if your control slips, you effect your own body and whoops! you've crushed every organ in your body!

But I do think we should have a reserve beyond physical exhaustion, otherwise we end up with 𝐖 𝐈 𝐙 𝐀 𝐑 𝐃      𝐂 𝐀 𝐑 𝐃 𝐈 𝐎

I think the backlash should be a thing whoever’s contesting you could do.
My ideas document has the following list of magic costs:

Causes pain, lose memories, gain scars; less power for passive magic, if you run out you die; your power goes to others, you strengthen some sort of monster that hunts you, energy (gravitational potential energy?), you disappear but keep aging.

I think memory loss could be an interesting cost, since knowledge is so important to magic. It lets spellbook-like things exist, as well.

I feel like each type of magic would have it's own backlash/consequence

Like if you're messing with someone's neurotransmitters then if you go to far it could end up affecting your own mind

Or if you mess with gravity you could just end up breaking it for yourself/in that area permanently

I'm gonna go on a limb, and say NO TIME TRAVEL UNLESS EVERYONE INVOLVED AGREES. It's messy and screws with agency.

I mean we could, but we should make them connected. Having to many magic systems that don't interact with each other feels disjointed, and doesn't make tooo much sense, especlly if we're approaching it from an academic standpoint.

On an aside, do we want magic highschool, or magic college.

yeah i should have guessed as much

so it seems like thermodynamics is still on the table and i always wanted to be like kvoth!

Yes Magic thermodynamics is very on the table

yay! i love the idea of taking a block of ice and lighting a candle with it! get it cause the ice has a lot of thermal energy only much more dispersed...

Yea.

That sounds good.

Hmmmm

Okokokok:

Heres my newest, most improvest thing:

At the second to last year, they take Force Constructs Principles (FCP), a beginner’s class that DOES NOT INVOLVE ANY NECROMANCY. They learn to create simple Constructs, like this idea I had where it would be a wall or smt, and it would have slots for arrows/bullets to come out. When a horizontal force is applied to the wall, that is nullified and the same force is applied directly to an arrow or poisoned dart in the slot nearest.

Stuff like that.

In FCA (advanced), they learn to make Constructs with multiple force manipulations, which involves NO NECROMANCY OR ANIMAL CRUELTY, and they make something like near autonomous golems.

An overhaul of the system itself:

They specifically identify sources of forces that they will nullify and use, which are then applied to a separate object, and the orientations of all applied forces can be rotated, though not dilated.

They have certain things that they can “see” or “foresee” and take advantage of, like gravity (not very useful, though, too chaotic) or more general magnetic or normal forces. However, when they try to look and foresee in more detail for things like the strong force, they cannot go into nearly that much detail.

For backlash, a very slight amount of every for taken is applied to the wielder, not doing anything perceivable on its own, but with enough… may rupture tissue, potentially an artery.

Ok, my house mascot should be a dragon, and I also wish to be the leader of House Inferious

Also, I am tempted to make math pyromancer.

I mean like, do we want to do personality houses (harry potter option) or anything else houses (not harry potter option)

Hmmmmmm

hmmmmmm

I hereby declare House Inferious to be renamed Infernious, because otherwise it sounds like inferior.

Also, if we are doing personality stuff, this is the practical science (as opposed to pure science) house.

I mean, I have zero understanding of frats

Not personality houses

We could split it by major?

Well I don't either. Major works.

At least until say, Hunted, finishes.
