BridgeBoi Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 In WaT we discovered the intent of Sigzil's and Hoid's dawnshard, exist. Add that to Rysn's shard, change and we have two confirmed dawnshard names. (Plus maybe a shard with the bind intent from that epigraph). What do y'all think is the 4th dawnshard? 1
TheoreticalMagic Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Move. The Prime Command that turns all the parts of creation into moving parts. The "start" button for life that Commands things that Exist to do stuff, puts Changes in motion, etc. 3
logicless.bt Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 I've been meaning to make a post with my own chart and internal/external as well as pushing/pulling, but I'll drop my thoughts here. See, the Dawn shards are Commands AND Adonalsium'd method of creation. Ado Commander things to Exist, and to Change. Therefore we can assume that all four Dawnshards are fundamental actions that all things in the universe must do. This rules out Create and Destroy as possible Dawnshards. Not everything needs to create -- and also the four Dawnshards together are the act of creation -- and not everything needs to destroy in order to qualify as "existing." So we need to look at what every single thing in the universe does (and for me, it helped to try to break down the Shards themselves into four quadrants, but I won't get into that here). What does everything in the Cosmere do, that not everything in the real world does? They EXPERIENCE themselves -- or FEEL, if that's the word you prefer. All objects have a sense of self, from a stick to a lick of flame. They enjoy being what they are, and if they ever stop enjoying it they utilize another command and change into something else. Soul casting and forgery take advantage of this unique difference between our world and the Cosmere. BIND is a good final Dawnshard, but I think it's a little different than that. One significant aspect of the Cosmere is its set of stringent rules that everything follows -- all things are organized and regulated according to the laws of investiture. Therefore I hold that the last Dawnshard is ORDER: the ability of all creation to create order within themselves and to order themselves according to the world around them. The most notable example of this is how all investiture post-Shattering was assigned to a newborn Shard. Thus far, all magic systems can be plotted out into careful charts, whether they are complex like the Metallic Arts or simple like the Old Magic. The Cosmere is built upon magic as science, and science is just ordered information and explanation. (I think that the WoB which states that one Dawnshard is different from the rest refers to Experience, and it's difference is that it is unique to the cosmere) 1
Quantus he/him Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Im still very much convinced that they map to the Allomantic Table per the old Quadrant Theory, and the Dawnshard names have so far fallen in line with that nicely. Exist For things to manifest in the Physical Awaken for the Cognitive, as the Primal Command to crossing the sapience boundary, Connect to capture to fundamental quantumly entangled Spiritual nature of of the Cosmere (without having any specific flavor to the direction or nature of what that Conection will do) Change to anchor the very concept of Temporal Progression, that transition between the settled Past and the possible Futures (ie The Edge of Infinity itself). 2
NotLiamRoss He/Him Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Before W&T my headcanon was that they were Change, Survive, Obey, and Feel (or Experience, as logicless said). It seems like Exist nicely slots in over Survive, making the list Change, Exist, Obey, Feel. This comes from the idea that the Dawnshards kind of acted like a prism to split Adonalsium's pure white light into the various colours and Intents of the Shards. For Obey, It seems like several shards have Intents related to imposing rules and following them (Honor, Dominion, now Reason) and this also matches how the cosmere has rules it needs to follow as well (the 10 surges for example). This could I guess also be Bind, as some other people on the board seem to think, I'm partial to Obey though. Feel/Experience seems to be the driving force that pushes the cosmere towards sapience (enough investiture left alone does become sapient after all). This also aligns with some of the Intents of other shards as well (notably Odium and Devotion). I'm sure we'll get more info in the future but dang if we've seen what the Exist Torment does to Hoid and Sig, I'd hate to see what the Feel Torment would do to someone. That'd be a sight. 1

Interesting — this is basically the same list I have, so it’s good to know I’m not the only one thinking this way Out of interest, what Shards do you have in the Obey and Feel categories? I have: Obey — Honor, Dominion, Reason, Autonomy Feel — Odium, Devotion, Valor, Mercy
