Immortal Platypus Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 It's time for another Dawnshard and Shard chart! Now that we know all 16 Shards, and another of the Dawnshards, I put together a table (with some help from my brother). There is a key to what most things mean, and reasoning for why I put everything where I did. Without further ado... voila! Spoiler Primary -> Exist Change Control* Connect* Exist Preservation Invention Odium Valor? Change Cultivation Whimsy Ambition Devotion Control* Virtuosity Ruin Autonomy Mercy Connect* Reason? Endowment Dominion Honor It wouldn't let me unbold the stuff, so you lucky ducks get to see my redesign! * mean that the DS isn't confirmed Reasonings: Exist: Preservation: Exist | Exist | Preservation is has the alignment of basically Exist Cultivation: Exist | Change | It needed Change, Exist or Control felt like the other options, and I felt like Invention works better in Change, Exist and Ruin can’t be in Exist, so Cult goes in Exist, Change Virtuosity: Exist | Control | Virtuosity is all about Controlling a skill that Exists, but the skill Existing is more important than the Control of that skill Reason: Exist | Connect | I think therefore I am (Exist) and mostly I needed it to go somewhere Change: Invention: Change | Exist | Invention definitely needed both Exist and Change, and Change felt more important. I could see it being switched with Cultivation for Exist, Change Whimsy: Change | Change | Whimsy is about changing your mind on a whim, or changing for the sake of change Ruin: Change | Control | Ruin needs Change. WOB lets us know that Ruin is about entropy (or Change), and Control seemed to fit better than Connect. It obviously doesn’t like Exist, and Change, Change was Whimsy Endowment: Change | Connect | Endowment is about bestowing things upon someone (Changing them) and it felt right for it to be in Connect Control*: Odium: Control | Exist | Odium seems to care a lot about Existing, and Control seems to be very important to it. Its goal of removing other Shards from the Cosmere comes from a place of wanting to be able to Control the cosmere and what happens in it Ambition: Control | Change | Ambition is about trying to reach higher and higher, and Changing to do so. They also go higher to take Control Autonomy: Control | Control | Autonomy is about having control over yourself, and no one else Controlling you Dominion: Control | Connect | Dominion is about Connecting others through Control. You establish Dominion over someone/something by controlling them, and you force them to Connect. Connect*: Valor: Connect | Exist | Originally in Connect, Control, but that fits Mercy better. Valor Connects people, and I needed it to go somewhere Devotion: Connect | Change | Devotion Connects people, whether it be through a faith, or other things they’re Devoted to. Oftentimes, the thing you’re Devoted to will call for Change of some sort. Mercy: Connect | Control | Mercy is about sparing someone who you have power over (or you control). Mercy also Connects people. Honor: Connect | Connect | Honor is about Connecting people, especially via oaths Some of these I feel more confident than others, but all are where I feel works best (ie, fitting them best as well as the rest of the table) 4
Dreamwa1ker she/her Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I was looking for a thread like this. I don't have a full chart yet, but for the other 2 dawnshards I had been kicking around: Create and Destroy. This makes all 4 almost like phases of life or existence: Create -> Exist -> Change -> Destroy. I also thought however that we have Exist and Change which feel quite physical, should the others be more cognitive. I could really see one being like the spark of awareness/sentience like Feel or Think. Especially with several shards seeming more in this vein of emotions or mental things (Odium, Devotion, Mercy, Ambition, and then Reason, Invention) 2

Especially with several shards seeming more in this vein of emotions or mental things (Odium, Devotion, Mercy, Ambition, and then Reason, Invention) I thought about each DS being something related to one realm (a PR DS, a CR DS, a SR DS, and a DS that connects them all like Connect), but both Change and Exist apply to all realms. Your body can change, you can change your mind, and your heart can change. Exist also applies everywhere, as all of your Realmic aspects exist (unless you're a CS). I could see Feel as a DS, but I don't know how well that would work with a chart. It would have to replace either Control or Connect, and those if one of them changes to Feel/Think, the other probably has to change in order for the chart to work. 21 minutes ago, RedBlue said: Could you expand on why you chose Control and Connect as the two speculative Dawnshards? I originally had Create and Destroy, but in the process of making the full chart, they didn't seem to work well. Change, Create, and Destroy all kind of encompass the same thing. Creation is Change, and so is destruction. I also ran across a WOB talking about how one is different from the others. I thought about Connect because it seems like the "Unite them" Dalinar heard wasn't from Honor, so I thought it might be a DS. Control seemed very on-brand with Autonomy and Dominion, and it works well with Odium. I kind of reverse engineered my way from the Shards into the last DS that I needed. Spoiler Curtis Could you write something about Dawnshards that we don't/won't know? Brandon Sanderson One Dawnshard is different from all the rest. Words of Radiance release party (March 3, 2014) Spoiler MoriWillow You once told us that one of the Dawnshards was different from the others. As of the events of this novella, is that still true? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Footnote: MoriWillow is referring to this WoB . Dawnshard Annotations Reddit Q&A (Nov. 9, 2020)
