Rysn's internal thoughts after receiving Change definitely imply it's "take what is and Remake it into something better" which is absolutely what I'd consider Invention, though I'm not 100% certain we should assume that's inhernet/canonical to the Dawnshard itself (we know Sigzil's relationship with what Exist permits can shift depending on his own personal viewpoint. That seems to be a major theme of the past few Stormlights, actually, in the whole "X doesn't work that way!" and then Dalinar reaches into the spirtual realm and makes things work that way, etc. In fact, I guess that's my overall concern with trying too hard to force the shards under the Commands, since at least as far as we understand it Intent can dramatically alter what a given Command will achieve (sigh, time to slot in another Warbreaker reread, isn't it?).

I need to point out that the difference between making something better and making something new basically depends on the scale you look at things. If you invent and add a new part to a machine then you have made something new and improved a machine. If you invent a machine used for a process, you have invented a machine and improved a process. Rinse and repeat.

This is why I made the grouping I did in the previous page. As the sense of improvement didn't seem to line up with Ruin. Grouping for reference Quote Shards pertaining to taking things and creating or improving- Virtuosity, Cultivation, Endowment, Invention
Szeth Pancakes he/they Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 I like Virtuosity, Cultivation, Endowment, Invention for Change and Honor, Preservation, Autonomy, Mercy for Exist. Ambition, Ruin, Whimsy, and Valor all have a sense of movement to them, but not change.
RedBlue Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 Since this has become the Shard Categorisation Thread, what do we think about the two unrevealed Dawnshards? Looking at the Shards that don’t seem to fall under either Change or Exist, there seem to me to be two loose themes: emotion-based Shards, and Shards pertaining to rules or order. If there is a Dawnshard that’s all about emotion, Feel sounds like a good name for it. Three Shards jump out: Odium, Devotion, and Valor. Not sure about the fourth one. Maybe Mercy or Whimsy? I’m less sure what to call the ‘rules’ Dawnshard. I’ve seen people suggest Bind. I think Obey or Rule might also work, depending what angle it goes for. Obvious Shards for this category: Honor and Dominion. There’s also Autonomy (self-rule) and Reason (logic is about following rules). Are other people thinking along the same lines with Feel and Bind, or am I out on a limb here?

Specifically in regards to Rysn, we see her applying for a patent during the Interlude. I think Invention could fit.
