This is just out of curiosity, and perhaps something to ask Brandon, but you know how holding Dawnshards or large amounts of investiture alters your spirit web? I was wondering: If you stamp yourself with a soulstamp and then gain access to a dawnshard or temporarily ascend or something similar, could it alter your spirit web using the stamp as a guide and make the effects of the soulstamp permanent?

How much of the Cosmere have you read? Spoilers for the greater Cosmere.

Spoiler

In TLM, Moonlight stamps herself with an Essence Mark that transforms her into an Elantrian. She has to chug a jar of Unkeyed Dor in the process. What is particularly notable about this is that I believe the Ghostbloods were still looking for her later in the book, which I believe meant the stamp did not degrade after 24-ish hours. They seemed to have reason to believe that she would need to be found and recovered, and not that the stamp would wear off on its own and she would make her way back independently.

As for Dawnshards, Brandon probably would RAFO that since he has quite intentionally never let us see a current Dawnshard holder use an Invested art. We know they're incredibly powerful, responsible in part for the destruction of Ashyn, and were used in the Shattering of Adonalsium. Considering the abilities that Nomad gained from just holding a Dawnshard for a period of time, it's hard to say whatΒ can'tΒ be done by someone holding a Dawnshard so long it is not an action diametrically opposed to the specific Dawnshard.Β

To summarize outside of the spoiler box, we have no idea of whatΒ can'tΒ be done with the Dawnshards rather than specifics of what can be done - other than acting in opposition with the Command of the specific Dawnshard. With destruction of planets and the Shattering of Adonalsium on the confirmed list, making an Essence Mark permanent is much, much lower power scale.

Beyond that, if you throw enough Investiture at anything, you can force a lot of things to work. For the Essence Mark, it probably depends on what it's trying to do.

I have read most of the Cosmere, but I don't remember this event. What is TLM?

The Lost Metal (Mistborn - Era 2, Book 4). Please see the Sharder FAQ (in this case section 2 -Β What are all those acronyms?)
