Who spread the rumors about Vin turning the sun yellow, the skies blue and the plants green?

On WoA chapter 36 we see Vin following Demoux, discovering he is a member of the Church of the Survivor. We see him preaching about how Vin is gonna "save" Scadrial, meaning she will turn the sun yellow and the skies blue etcetera (basically what Sazed did after his Ascension). When asked by Vin about who told him that, Demoux answers that these are rumours that are spreading, but he doesn't know where they come from.

Do we know who spread these rumors and why? From my first read of Mistborn, I don't remember that's ever explained.

I think you meant to ask, "where did the rumors originate from?"

We know who spread them by repeating them, that was Demoux, the religion's literal first Seer. 😃

Who made them up to begin with, or revealed them in Demoux's hearing, could be any of one of many planted agents from secret societies (including maybe the Keepers i suppose) or random observers or inspired skaa.

Kelsier started the rumors - after he died, they got attached to Vin by default. It was answered in the Annotations (new Era 1 page has links to them), like so much that had to be cut for length/relevance.

Vin Follows Demoux

And, this chapter just keeps going! It's one of the ones that suffered a bit from the rearrangement of some of the sequences, in this case I moved the "Chase down Demoux" scene from an earlier chapter into this one to keep the suspense going.

I wanted this scene for two reasons. The first, obviously, is to round out Demoux just a bit and make spotting the imposter a more difficult problem for Vin. However, an equally important part of it was my desire to show how the Church of the Survivor is evolving.

Those of you who have read Elantris know that I'm fascinated by religion. In this case, I want to show a fledgling religion, and try to postulate how one would develop. A lot of the observations made by Vin here, then, are my attempts at tracing the beginnings of religious movement. Right now, there is no doctrine or ceremony—just belief and hope.

And one of those hopes is that Vin will somehow bring the sun and plants back to the way they once were. I don't hit the visuals on the world as hard in this book as I did in the last one. Hopefully, it's present enough in the setting to make you remember that the sun is red because of the haze in the upper atmosphere. Plants are brown, not green, and there are no flowers. The prophesy that Vin will restore these things is new, relating to some of the things that Kelsier used to talk about.

Oh I see. I guess the people need hope in uncertain times, and they will find it anywhere.

On the other hand, I am one to support Kelsier and his doings, but spreading rumors that he was gonna change the whole ecosystem of the planet when he had no idea how to do it or what caused it to change in the first place? Bit too much narcissistic, even for him.

Thank you for your answer.

I don't know if he said he would change these things (except once to Vin), just talked about how brown plants, a red sun and soot clogged air wasn't right (based on Mare's Dream - and the Logbook descriptions). TFE:

Spoiler

Ch 17:

“For me,” he said, “it was that night. Alone in the Pits, my arms bleeding from the day’s work. Mare was dead, and I feared that I was responsible—that my lack of faith took away her strength and will. She died knowing that I questioned her loyalty. Maybe, if I’d really loved her, I wouldn’t have ever questioned. I don’t know.”

“But, you didn’t die,” Vin said.

Kelsier shook his head. “I decided that I’d see her dream fulfilled. I’d make a world where flowers returned, a world with green plants, a world where no soot fell from the sky… ” He trailed off, then sighed. “I know. I’m insane.”

“Actually,” Vin said quietly, “it kind of makes sense. Finally.”

Ch 35:

Quote

She gripped the empty pouch, frustrated. Something crinkled inside of it.

She looked down, opening the pouch and noticing a piece of paper that she hadn’t seen before. She pulled it out and unfolded it delicately. It was the drawing that Kelsier had shown her—the picture of a flower. Mare had always kept it with her, dreaming of a future where the sun wasn’t red, where plants were green…

Ch 36:

Quote

It was like a radiant dome over the city.

The light was yellow, the color Kelsier had always said the sun should be

I think it's more likely he shared Mare's dream with some Skaa (and likely the soldiers in the caves) and, over time, that turned into the "prophesy" you asked about.

Wasnt it part of the Hero Of Ages prophesy?

That's not relevant here, see: Treamayne's reply.

But... technically? It seems that Preservation's plan, to some extent, needed Sazed to restore the yellow sun, the blue spikes, green grass, plants and flowers etc. But it's difficult to pinpoint the detail of this.
