Adtae, coincidentally, is that culture. Adtae thought. How about we ask the idea for some of this "Alive" metal. He approached the idea, forming the thought in his mind.

The Ferrians can die, but nodes have memories and are interchangeable, so an individual swarm is more transient than a human body would be. The Idea does whatever Adtae thinks it should in order to interact with him, then makes what he thinks alive metal should be. Quote For the swarm pure iron is something like sugar, but they need something closer to protein in order to heal. So a life form from their planet would work, but a random living metal construct wouldn’t.

They are mostly made from rust and other iron oxides, such as lodestone, but need trace amount of several other elements, including aluminum. The nodes are made by colonies of microbes the metabolize iron by oxidizing it, then divert some of that energy to moving, and most of the rest to powering the node itself. They’re held together by, and thinks using, a set of electromagnets in each node. They store memories in the nodes, and need to consume an amount of food proportional to the amount of nodes they have. I’ve got more, but I need to eat dinner. 1

Why do you think the alive thought had it? It does think to create, but why would it create this?” Rust puts the strange thing aside, deciding to address their new name. “You can call me Rust, I suppose. But rust means many things. It will be a copy, but anything generated by the Idea is a copy. If the thread dies, the idea-plane can burst, spitting out anything someone wants to keep in this thread. The nature of the gate or path depends upon the idea of the person creating it, and whether we can view or interfere that thread is up to them as well.
