The biologist huffs. “Well, avian species are seemingly most likely to become sapient, and it did follow my instructions, although that could just be confirmation bias.”

His mouth tightened. He didn’t like this.

The man begins to panic, then calms as his suit injects him with sedative. This may not have been the best idea, however, as he then goes. “If you’re a criminal, you’re under arrest. Through the authority of the IISC, I’m confiscating whatever it is that lets you teleport, your suit other than life support, and any other weapons or xenotech you may possess.”

Adtae shook. Almost like laughing. I have no “life” support. And believe me. My crime was much too long ago to prosecute me on it. And compared to the crimes of the world today, it was minor. But in my time, it was enough to get me executed.

Weapons or xenotech? Whatever allows me to teleport? Good sir, your shadow is your own.

Although I guess you could steal this vehicle from whichever noble owns it.

The biologist scoffs. “You’re insane. We haven’t had a feudal society for more than a millennium and this talk about shadow magic? I’m betting a Quantum is bored and messing around.”

Adtae is starting to get very aggravated. He holds out his hand, and the shadows pull themself together, condensing in his had to form a black dagger of the same material as his cloak.

I’m not from around here. Now you are going to let me and my companions go, or I will have no choice but to attack you.

The bird hopped off his shoe and huffed in agreement.

The man, who continues to have no actual authority and no weapons, stands his ground. “That would be assault. I would have to report you to the authorities!” The Vvondin sighs again, and gets out the car’s emergency first aid kit and weapons, hoping to prevent any problematic consequences.

The bird hopped over and pecked his foot defiantly.

What's he wearing, again?

“Nothing. I just question your authority to experiment with living beings like that.”

Could I not argue self defense against kidnapping?

Adtae stabbed at the man.

One of the suits Rust misinterpreted.

The man’s foot is shod in a black fabric, which seemingly contains a lattice of ridges beneath it. Pecking it leaves no mark, and it tastes horrible.

The human biologist is distracted by Adtae, but the Vvondin, who is more inclined to explain anyway, speaks to you. “Calm. We do experiment - life is versatile - but we will not experiment on you, who will be, despite what my colleague says, our guests. We will swap the insides of your mouths to insure you do not spread disease, and we may give the bird set of puzzles to determine how it can communicate and what it can understand. These will be voluntary, though we will reward successful completion.”

All this man has done was act rude and claim he could arrest you. That’s at worst fraud, not kidnapping.

The man’s suit is reinforced against tearing; punctures in a foreign atmosphere can be catastrophic. An ordinary blade could not puncture the suit, but Adtae does not use an ordinary blade.

He bent his eyebrows. He still didn’t like the idea of being a test subject, but with this man’s wording he seemed slightly more open to it.

Aaahhhhh fine.

Adtae diverts the blade at the last moment, then throws it at the wall of the car. It went straight through.

The bird hopped onto the handle playfully.

The Vvondin sighs again. “Thank you for not harming my colleague, but I can only repair so much damage. I do not wish to walk.” They open the door for Rust and the rest of the group. “If you are done threatening violence, perhaps you may wish to journey to the research station.”
The human biologist realizes that Adtae may quite possibly kill him, and decides to shut up until he’s in a position of power.

The man thought. This was probably their best option here. He sighed through his nose.

“Come on, little one.” He cradled it in his hands as he settled into the car, then laid it in his lap and put his hand over it.

The human biologist is driving, and he attempts to passive-aggressively hit every ridge, bump, and hole he can find. Unfortunately, he’s foiled by the vehicle’s impressive suspension. The car is fast, too. Distances that would take hours to walk snap by in minutes as they head for their destination.

The car is going over 100 miles per hour, so you don’t get very long to see any particular features. There’s a chain of mountains in the distance for a while, and closer up dunes can be seen, grey on one side and rusty on the other. More blade-plants scatter the landscape, although not nearly as many as the strange thicket. And after around a half hour, a small ravine comes into view, straight in your path.

He was mostly zoning out.

The bird yawned and woke up again.

It was getting very annoyed about having to fall asleep so often, but it snuggled up to the man's arm happily anyway.

He moved it to his shoulder so it could snuggle his neck.
