Some shift under your weight, but some are evidently imbedded in the ground. Rust anchors nodes to them, lifting loose ones out of the ground. The group gets near a sort of mound with a small cave, iron stitched together into an overhang. “Watch out for that. Copper demons sometimes hide in there.” Rust says, pointing at it.

Snapping out of his mood, Kal's head turned to the cave. He nodded, then his spirits seemed to fall again.

Within it are two passages that seem to curve around into one another through the wedge shaped mound. A breeze picks up some rust haze, and it is visibly sucked into the cave as it passes by at a diagonal. To see this better, Rust expands. “If there is a copper demon there, it is very small. So it is safe.”

They eat people - swarms, not you - and hide places to attack them. They are made of something different, something less alive; copper is the sky people word for it.”

Rust contracts. “If they are where they were, around - distance is hard to tell you. I am going to the planet spirit, and then I will go to where the sky people are. There are markers at the two planet spirits; they tell you where to find things. The sky people were going to put one there, when I was still with them. If it is there, it will talk to them and let them come to us.” Rust points at one of the sharp metal bushes, around fifty feet away, perhaps. “That blade plant is three medium numbers away. Twelve of those make a big number, and twelve of those make a very big number. This is more counting than we do usually, but twelve of those would be a very very big number. I would say the planet spirit is three very very big numbers away - we were close, which is good.” @Spark of Hope @Through The Living Glass Quote For reference, a very big number would be around half a mile. So a very very big number is six miles, making the total distance eighteen miles, or six hours of walking. Also, I made that counting system up on the spot. I figured base twelve made sense for several reasons. (You’re not the only one who’s being forced to worldbuild, Wrath. I did want this to happen, but I still don’t know what I’ll say if you ask the sky people inconvenient questions. Please do, though. Forced worldbuilding is helpful.)

But then I did it again, and it didn’t… I trust the first time more anyways. Adtae cocked his head, doing multiplication. Then getting confused. “So… ok.”

Rust sets up some segments as an abacus, trying to help. (It doesn’t work, because I don’t think abacuses can do exponents, or even really multiplication.)
