Aela nodded.

The Duke noticed the shivers. "Can't do much about those."

"Your powers work as such. When in presence of a certain element, thing, or other - it is specific to who you are Servant to - you will be strengthened. When you use your powers"

He looked to Felicity. "When you are skilled enough, you will be able to pinpoint where any emotions are coming from, and what they are."

He stared to the others. "This will not be particularly useful against the Servants of Rage, but there is a trick to your power. A dangerous one, but useful in a pickle."

He raised a hand, and suddenly a loud explosion and fire appeared at the side of the hall. It went out quickly.

That’s for sure.

Freedom hissed. "Don't tell them that you're going to kill the Duke."

Cole nods semi-imperceptibly. “Honestly, Freedom just told me to follow those other people. I can do carpentry or something, as I said.”

Technically all true, but only technically.

I didn’t know it was possible. Intellect must be making some progress with deciphering the Archstone.

Ya know, the Archstone originally had a name from other languages, but… uh…. It sounded like crayon-stone…

"What-?"

The Duke smiled. “Something I find quite interesting is that when the air is cold enough, it will separate into parts. One is very flammable… the trick, though, was making sure that the actual explosion would happen. Because to get it, one needs energy to strike the flammable part. So I actually have to cool only the non-flammable part… it is quite interesting, and should by no means be possible.

You mean, even you don’t know everything about the powers you give? she asked curiously.

Freedom nodded. “Yes. That would be quite interesting, wouldn’t it?”

They result from an exploit in how the Archstone works. Madness underestimated the capability of a soul to affect other Threads. I know of the powers, but I only know that because Madness exploited it herself.

Now here’s the magic system within a magic system.

The Duke smiled. “Science. It was a well known fact among our people that cooking something down too much was dangerous, but only recently we started researching it as a weapon. I also sometimes like to modify the air currents ever so slightly by cooling it down. It is nothing like what a servant of Madness might do, but it is useful.”

You are rn spying on Retlen, and your employer has been following you from a little ways back.

You would have seen it when Retlen hallucinated (o ye he hallucinated, just talking to the air), and I can assure you that your employer would wish to hear of the hallucination.

Retlen stared into the fire, the look of a madman. A fanatic. What would you have me do about the heretics, Flame? My knights may have failed, but I will serve you.

A trail of fire extended from the flame, and Retlen put a hand to his head. The flame pooled into one spot, reaching higher until it took the form of a human. “My servant. I have decided to show my form to you, for your services to me. You must hurry, speed along to the castle of your once father. And there, they will have rebelled. You must kill them.”

Not a single other person could see or hear the figure, though they might see Retlen.
