The guards are confused. But they still charged, and two have readied their crossbows.

The pancake slams into his face, and he is knocked over, unconscious.

A guard slams into his prone figure, tripping. The third had been aiming a crossbow, but when the pancake flew towards his companion, he flinched and misfired his arrow at the one who tripped.

Cole’s jaw drops. “Oh no! How did this happen? I was just trying to give you a snack, and now the pancake is ruined! It was a good pancake too; apparently quite dense.” He walks up to the uninjured guard, then attempts to deck him. “Like I said, you looked tired. I think this rest will benefit you.” Cole says to the now-unconscious man.

“No, not wonderful! My pancake has been destroyed! On the bright side though, I found a crossbow.” Cole picks up the crossbow right next to the unconscious body of the man who had it. “I didn’t do anything wrong, but I doubt the others would agree. So I think it may be time to move along.”

Feeding the insanity is nice. Convincing Cole to become a cannibal would be hard, and potentially triggering. 
Unrelatedly, I think one of my characters is waiting for one of yours in around half of the RPs I’m in.
