Evan sees two people a little way into the water sitting in a canoe. "Who is "you"? Are you the one in the canoe cuz I'm the one waving at you." Evan waves at the tributes.

It's all good!

And they're in two kayaks, not a canoe btw

Aerol waved to Evan. Yeah, that's me! I'm in the blue kayak. She started to make her way towards him, Reef chirping excitedly.

First looks at the boy waving from the shore, "You sure that is him? What if it is a kandra, they were in the last game" she says somewhat nervously.

"Yeah!"

She made her way over the boat, swimming through the pool to get there.

The boat had a smooth white hull. It wasn't discreet whatsoever, but it looked sturdy. Not deepwalker-proof, certainly, but far better than a plastic kayak.

There was a step to climb into the boat near the back.

She stared at the boat suspiciously.

Looks fine to me!

"It might be rigged with explosives . . ."

Oh, so now your being careful? 🤨

"It just feels too easy, that's all," Sharlin swung her leg over the edge of the boat, testing out the bottom with her foot. "Forrest made a big deal about 'surviving this long' and we haven't run into anything dangerous."

What if he's just being nice.

"I'm too jaded to believe in nice people, just like The Survivor,* you figure out they aren't real once you get old enough."

But I'm nice!

"In an annoying way, see? So you're not actually nice, your overbearing, which is completely different."

That was mean, even for you 🥲

"I just told you nice people don't exist!" She smirked to herself.

There was no clear reason to be suspicious of the boat revealed in her examinations.

Ha! See? The boat is fine, nice people do exist.

"You realize the person you're defending is in charge of a murder tournament, right?"

I wasn't thinking that far . . .

Sharlin snorted, and stepped fully into the boat, examining the inside.

The entire boat was open to the air; it wasn't big enough to have anything as fancy as a cabin. Still, there were cushioned seats, and storage compartments filled with some quality fishing gear and a few days worth of food.

And, sitting on the drivers seat, was a single handgun, along with a note.

All of this is yours on a single condition: Don't kill any other tributes unless necessary for your survival.

Wanton violence will not help this country re-build itself.

Give them a hero who wins through perseverance.

I'd assume you suspect my true motives. I have no need to explain myself to you. Know only this; it is not my intent to have you killed.

If you aren't careful, the islands will do that themselves.

my dumb butt forgot about this, so here we are...

"THERE'S A GUN!"

Teenage girls and their strange obsessions.

"It's so pretty!" Sharlin bent over and carefully picked it up. She sat on one of the seats and started examining the craftsmanship.

Umm Sharlin there's also a note that looks important.

She picked it up and read it, scrunching her face up. "Aaaaw, he says I can't kill anyone . . ."

THANK THE SURVIVOR

It's not like she'd been planning on a murder spree, but she doubted this game would be as easy if she couldn't attack anyone first. She'd accept the deal, though, she wasn't so stupid that she'd pass up an opportunity like this.

"Why's he so set on me being a hero, anyway?"

It says you might be able to guess his intentions . . . maybe he's a spy or something and he wants to overthrow the big bad government?

"No he's been too harsh for that, 'only one can survive' and all. I don't think he's planning a rebellion, at least not one based in the arena."

I do find it a bit odd that'd he'd choose you, I mean, you'd think there'd be other tributes who are more honorable. Forrest wouldn't have to bribe them not kill people.

"Maybe it's my experience or something, I have gone into an arena and come back out alive, even if I wasn't a tribute."

True.

Is the pool in the cave connected to the ocean? How hard is getting the boat out going to be?

Squall waves from where he is. Blackjack flys over and sits on his head. He walks up. "So? anything interesti- OH A BOAT DAMN" he looks over the boat.

Evan waits on the beach and realizing he doesn't have a weapon, very obviously drops his apple that he's eating, leans down to pick it up, and covertly picks up a palm sized rock and stuffs it into his pocket. Then he pulls out another undroped apple that he had picked from the tree and holds it into the air then asks himself, "Want an apple?"

Sharlin hopped out of the boat, and started carefully pushing it towards the pool. Hopefully she could steer it out to the coast from here.

Squall took it, getting onto the boat. He gets it within walking distance of where they were before the cave, hops out, grabs his book, then hops back in.

the differences between these two are astronomical and highly amusing.

Sharlin also hops off, and runs to were she stashed her bag.

Winter looks at the boat admiringly. It was far superior to anything he has had growing up. It might be a bit obvious, but it could get them access to distant islands that didn’t have tributes on them. Maybe his long term survival strategy was going to pay off after all.
“This will be useful…”

"Does anybody have one of those mental shielding birds?" Sharlin asked as she climbed back in.
