Berin thought quickly.
“My blood, you say?”
Berin lowers his voice, so it was only audible to the creature.

”Why are you subject to these people? What have they done for your respect? Or are they controlling you? What are they doing for your loyalty?”

”You are so much bigger than them, so much more powerful. So what if they can negate your powers? You are better than them.”

He guessed that they could negate the creatures vine power, otherwise it would never be a prisoner to them.

”When I get out of here, there is someone I will kill, someone close to the game makers. If you let me go, I promise I will also kill the game maker responsible for your confinement.”

Berin said this, while struggling against the vines, pushing them away from himself.

The Greenspine paused. "THEY PROMISED ME THE BLOOD OF MANY, AND I AM FREE TO ROAM THE ISLANDS. I HAVE NO GRUDGE AGAINST THE GAMEMAKERS."

It might have worked with the Redspine, but the Greenspine is a bit different.

A vine found its way into Berin's arm wound, pushing into his flesh.

Flop. Flopping flop flop flop. Flopping flop. What the floppy flop. Who the flop does this guy think he flopping is? Floppy flop flop.

Berin screamed, but he was no longer afraid of the vines. They could kill him, but so could everything else in life. He gritted his teeth through the pain and continued.
“You are free to roam the islands? Since when did a creature like you need permission to go where it wishes? Look at you. You’re pathetic. An animal, barely able to talk, whipped and tamed by the game masters. They bought your loyalty with something you could have had without any trouble.”

”The islands can hardly be a satisfying  space for one such as you. It’s like they dropped a man in an orphanage and told him that they could ‘give’ him the space.”

The Greenspine shook with rage. "HOW DARE YOU? I WILL MAKE YOUR DEATH SO PAINFUL YOU WILL WISH YOU HAD SIMPLY GIVEN UP!" Vines wrapped around Berin's mouth, crawling inside, and bent his arms until they neared breaking.

It seems my shenanigans were accounted for with the new design. :)

Come on. Don’t I get aaaaannnnnyyyyy Verdant Vine manipulation… my hallucinations fit all the requirements… and Berin is only missing the “willing them away” part.

*wink wink*
*cough*
Im looking at you, Gamemakers.

Berin chocked on the vines, barely breathing through his nose.

He could see them pulling at the vines to no effect. He adopted a cynical mindset. He had killed them, but if he died, then they stopped existing. No one would remember them.

“A real shame,” the voice cooed demeaningly in his ear. “Such promise… such disappointment.”

Spark… spark.. take pity.

The only person we have seen with the ability to manipulate the spores stumbled upon it accidentally while about to die. Please. I beg.

Berin’s anger flared up as he heard these words. These gamemakers were worse than he was. *Maj* had mentioned that dishonor kept him up crying. It did the same for Berin, occasionally. But he doubted these people ever felt an ounce of doubt, or guilt. No regret. To them, he wasn’t a person, he was an experiment.

He raged at the vines, willing them off of himself.

There. I said it. Now can I has the power?

The greenspine is a spore eater. Based on Tress, the vines would react primarily to protect it, and wouldn’t be controllable by anything, including the greenspine.
(GMs can overrule this of course.)

Well there are spores, and then there are spores. The greenspine is obviously controlling something, but a sporeaters vines would only be there to protect it. So it needs extra spores (perhaps given to it by the gms)

Despair, you come to me
With your poison and your misery
O Death, you come to sting
With your poison and your misery

Death, death, death, death
Death surrounds me, singing to me softly
And the shadow spreads his wings around me
(Death) In the night, close your eyes, or it means to come in
This is how it feels when you’re bent and broken (this is how it feels when your dignity’s stolen
(Death) In the night, close your eyes, or it means to come in
I can feel the shadow creeping in my mind
Don’t close your eyes!

Haven’t read Tress, so can’t realistically give it to you 😋

This greenspine is so interesting, however. It's a different kind of symbiosis than we see in TotES. In the book, the sporeater cannot be killed because of the spores that protect her, but here we see the verdant vines actively helping the greenspine hunt?

Then again, the vines only became apparent when the greenspine was injured, right?

And yet now they are actively trying to kill Berin, not just protect the greenspine.

What an interesting creature.

. . .

But my point still stands.

So does mine. These vine could just be extra spores they equipped the person with. Plus, the only reason it didn’t use them b4 is bc they were underwater the entirety of the fight.

The Greenspine pulls Berin towards its face with the vines, and the vines around Berin's mouth loosed, allowing him to speak again. "GOODBYE, YOUNG ONE." It opened its mouth wide. One of its fiery orange eyes trickled blood.

I'm playing fast and loose with the rules here, but this seems to make sense so maybe I'll stick to the stuff stated here.

Hang it (not a person, sadly). I’m still waiting for GM word.

*stubborn hypocrisy*

I won’t let my character die until I’ve explored every plausible way out.

That's up to the GM, but yeah.

It would be odd if you have spores though. The only thing they sent you in with was a basic knowledge of the arena and you Aviar.

Hmm

Welp, we'll see what happens! 😁
