"Nothing," June replied, "Well . . . you just said you thought I was funny but I don't really know what else besides that." He pulled his legs up to sit cross legged on the sofa, thinking.

She looked at him sadly, not saying anything. What a sad existence these people must live. No wonder August and July ran away.

He didn't notice her sadness. "Sooooo . . . what are you good at?"

He nodded. "I'm sure Father will let him have more freedom after we explain what happened to him."

She sat silent for a few moments. “Tell me what you did out there.”

She sighed. "I guess I can do a few things." She picked up her lute, plucking the strings lightly. "I play my instruments, obviously. I perform for people; not just music, but I tell stories as well."

"I'm really great with throwing knives, and I can usually defend myself just fine in combat . . ." she eyed Arke.

"I'm a decent enough cook," she chuckled, "And I like to go swimming in the ocean and climb trees. I'm good with people and make friends fairly easily. I can pick locks, fish, use a bow and arrow to hunt, and I'm a pretty good gardener, I guess."

She shrugged. "There are other things, but that's just off the top of my head."

"That's so many . . ." June replied, seeming a little overwhelmed.

He leaned forward conspiratorially and asked, "Can you read?"

“Yeah, but… what did you two do?”

"We . . . well, we went off and did different things for a while, but when I found out that September was coming after us faster then I realized, I caught up with him to warn him."

Her eyes widened. "Can . . . can you not read?"

"Weeeeeeell, technically I can read sheet music which counts for something, right?"

She shook her head. "Ah- no- those are . . . those are two very different things." She tapped her finger on the armrest anxiously.

"Did they . . . teach you anything besides music? Anything at all?"

"Well you don't need to it to play music so . . . I wish I could read though, it'd make ordering at restaurants easier."

"So you can leave as you please, then?"

"N-no sometimes patrons will want me to play at a restaurant and I get to order food as a perk--the older ones of us have more freedom though, because Father trusts them more. That's why October and December are always gone off on missions and stuff."

My goodness; no wonder he's been acting so innocently! Niamh thought, He's practically a child!

"Wait, so are you all . . . the king's children? By blood?"

Besides his age, of course. Mentally.

"Now we're like . . . adopted . . . sorta . . . it's weird. I guess he hated all his real kids for some reason so he disowned them all and then hand-picked knew ones. Something about keeping the fate of the empire in line."

He chuckled, "Not that I'm involved in all these politics."

Clearly . . .

"That . . . that is really weird." This whole thing was starting to make her feel sick. She decided to change the subject.

"So, June, do you . . . have any hobbies you like to do in your free time?" But as soon as she said it, she wondered if he even had free time.

"Oh yeah I write my own songs sometimes, and people usually like them but I'm really slow at it."

"Only when people aren't watching."
