FearTheAluminumMisting
I'm at the beginning of my re-read for Wind and Truth, and the Way of Kings doesn't hold back in interests. For context, I started reading the cosmere with TWoK back in 2020 and I've never re-read it. I've completed all other works besides the stormlight novellas and 6th of the dusk (waiting for IotE). The first of Dalinar's visions contains mentions of the ten deaths leading to desolations. It's making me increasingly positive that we will see each of these deaths in each of the ten days leading up to the dual of champions. My question then is how many aethers are we going to see. The numerology doesn't match up for each one to be an aether, and the n=1 dataset is not nearly enough for me to be confident in predicting what they could be... If they are not aether related, could each one be an unmade? Perhaps the first nine are each of the unmade and the tenth is Odium itself? I'm also starting to suspect that there are 10 unmade, and that the bright light is also one of the unmade that is in contrast to the 9 shadows for reasons... Sorry these are just rambles.

Ten Deaths WoB: Spoiler Quote Pagerunner The Starfall vision. Ten Deaths, referring to the Midnight Essence. That's what the one Radiant said, they're the Ten Deaths. Is that the Unmade, the Ten Deaths. Brandon Sanderson Well, there's nine Unmade, so... JordanCon 2018 (April 22, 2018) Spoilers for Tress: Spoiler There are twelve Aethers - they do not corrospond to the Rosharan philosophies of 10 (heralds, essences, fools, etc.) but there may be some connection as they derive from a similar source Quote MoriWillow Is there any significant relationship between the twelve types of aethers and the ten essences on Roshar, even just in a sense of recurring cosmere-wide patterns? Brandon Sanderson I would say yes, but it's tenuous. Secret Project #1 Reveal and Livestream (March 8, 2022) Quote Comatose Kind of a similar question about the Midnight Essence, now that we have seen that crop up in Tress as well as in Stormlight Archive. Is something similar happening with the Midnight Essence? We have also the nightmares, in Yumi, that appear similar, they're also mimicking things. Brandon Sanderson So, there's a couple of things getting interwoven here. The actual idea of Midnight Essence is a concept like Lightweaving that predates the Shattering of Adonalsium, that various magic systems are basically "borrowing" a law of the cosmere and creating a parallel effect from the same basis, if that makes any sense. Yumi is a little distinct from that. It's feeling similar; I would not call it true Midnight Essence. It's an awful lot more like a Lightweaving that has--because Lightweavings can have mass to them, because investiture can have mass to it--so you're looking a little bit more like... imagine a bunch of Stormlight becoming tangible, you can touch it, because of a powerful Lightweaving or something like that. Of course, these things all bleed together because I'm using the same fundamental principles to make them. But, for me, Midnight Essence has this personality that comes prefixed. What the Midnight Mother is making, what you're seeing in the Midnight Sea and things like this, you're gonna get some similar personalities to these things, and not necessarily the same with the nightmares. <edited for lenth and relevance> Shardcast Interview (July 30, 2023) 3 hours ago, FearTheAluminumMisting said: besides the Stormlight novellas and 6th of the dusk (waiting for IotE). Will you be reading the novellas on this re-read? Also, are you aware that there are Sixth of the Dusk references in Rhythm of War? SotD: Spoiler If you do decide to read it, may I recommend the Shadows Beneath version? If you like "behind the story" information, the Shadows Beneath anthology shows, not just the Final version of SotD, but the Brainstorming Podcast transcript for the story, first draft, Critique Podcast Transcript, and editing process and draft. Hope that helps
FearTheAluminumMisting
The Novellas are on my shelf for when I get there, I know there are some 6th things, but not specifically where. I had assumed that it was something I missed having not read edgedancer. I also think there only being nine unmade doesn't dissuade me from comparing them to the ten deaths. I think there are compelling options there. Perhaps Odium himself or his champion could be the tenth death "source"
