Tyrannius Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 What should I read next? I started with Stormlight, read them all years ago. Decided to read more cosmere and in 6 months I have read all of Mistborn era 1 and 2 with all supporting novellas and short stories, Elantris, Emperors Soul, and Warbreaker. It all culminated with a completion of The Lost Metal yesterday and holy crap! So much cosmere lore! In prep for Wind and Truth, should I restart the Stormlight Archive now or try to hit all these other standalones like Tress, Sunlit man, White Sand, etc? I don't want to run out of time and still be halfway through my SA re-read because I decided to read 4 or 5 more standalone when Wind and Truth releases. Which other standalone should I read before jumping back into SA? Which ones should be left until after a full SA re-read (to include Wind and Truth)? My reading time will be somewhat limited as I have a new kid on the way (she will be here in a few days lol), so I'm trying to make a good decision now before I jump into SA again, I wouldn't mind reading a couple more standalone if it gives my SA re-read more meaning though. But, if it's just very surface level stuff and not really cosmere heavy like Mistborn era 2, then I think I would hold off until the end of my full SA reread. What say you?
Ninth of the Night Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 (edited) I'd say go ahead and start your SA re-read. Especially if you've only read them once, they get better a second (or tenth) time through. Tress and Yumi can wait for later, they're more standalone than the rest of the novels. Still definitely worth reading eventually, they're also relatively short. Sunlit Man however I recommend reading after finishing Rhythm of War. It's got lots of tasty cosmere bits. a Faceless Immortal he/him Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 (edited) The secret projects were both quite fun reads, but they are very much insights into the future of the cosmere. They tell us quite a bit about where the technology is progressing to, and give hints to some of the broad future conflicts that we will see taking place in later eras of Mistborn and Stormlight. I can see an argument for saving them for later, when they are more 'current' in the timeline, but I would't have the self restraint to save them for reading in chronological order . A Stormlight re-read is probably the best option right now though, considering W&T is coming out fairly soon and the Secret Projects don't offer much immediately relevant insight. reisleK she/her Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 I would say you have (at least) two options. Option one: Stormlight re-read and get Sunlit Man in after Rhythm of War but before Wind and Truth Option two: Tress, Yumi, and White Sand (in whatever order), then Stormlight Re-read with Sunlit Man I read Tress and Yumi in the span of a week and a half (They're about 350 pages, if I'm remembering right) My recommendation is go with what interests you the most! Plus, you don't have to read Wind and Truth the second it is released, there's no issue in waiting a little so you can catch up. Overall, it really depends on what you want and your reading speed.

There is a lot of discussion on this type of question. This thread also has link to many other similar threads. However, for your specific case (if I understand correctly) you intend to do your first re-read of the Stormlight Archive, and it has been many years since the first reading, and they were your first Cosmere experience back when you started. In that case, you may not know that (not including Wit): Way of Kings has references and/or cameos from: Major: None Minor: Elantris, White Sand, Mistborn Era 1 Words of Radiance has references and/or cameos from: Major: Warbreaker Minor: White Sand, Mistborn Era 2, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, and multiple Curiosities[1] Oathbringer has references and/or cameos from: Major: Warbreaker, Elantris Minor: White Sand, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, Mistborn (both Eras) Rhythm of War has references and/or cameos from: Major: Mistborn (both Eras), Warbreaker, White Sand, Elantris Minor: Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, Sixth of the Dusk If any of those are on your "incomplete" list, you may consider doing those before starting your re-read. [1] - If you are not aware of Sanderson Curosities: Spoiler They are the "unpublished" works he has made available for fans. Because I can’t think of any in OB, but there are definitely some in RoW, and you didn’t mention Elantris there. 1

Nope, but thanks for mentioning I forgot to add Elantris to the RoW Reference Oathbringer Spoilers Spoiler The Oracle of Rii is Riino - the "Beautiful, once so beautiful" Hoed from Elantris that Spirit and gang drop into the Perpendicularity before they know what it is. By WoB, he is now also a member of the Ire (but there for his own reasons): Quote Questioner Why did the Elantrians came to Roshar in the first place? Because the question came up after I reread Elantris, so... Brandon Sanderson Are you talking about... specifically... the old ones? Yeah, why were they on Roshar? So, those specific individuals - the Ire, as we call them - are a group of Elantrians that are not representing all Elantrians. They were there. The one you've met is there for a specific reason. The Ire are involved there. They're mostly... where you've seen them, is on Scadrial so far, but they're interested in Roshar. You are talking about the lighthouse keeper, I assume? So, the lighthouse keeper, wouldn't... would be counted, I guess, as one of the Ire and is there for a specific purpose, but it is not related to their general purpose, that they're trying to achieve. How's that for being vague? I'm sorry. ICon 2019 (Oct. 15, 2019) Edited August 7, 2024 by Treamayne SPAG
