What are your thoughts on the name for the Brandon Sanderson convention?

I like the name a lot. Nexus invokes a sort of cool interconnectivity/central hub. I did find it a little funny that Brandon says they are using the name Dragonsteel for too many things so they need a better name for the convention, but then it is still called the "Dragonsteel" Nexus. We have Dragonsteel the material, the book, the company, the convention....

Still, I really like the name and am very excited for the event.

I do have a question regarding Dragonsteel 2024 that the community may be able to help clear up. I am traveling in from Germany and may not be able to attend on Thur. On the Dragonsteel website it says, "The Wind and Truth Release Event will be held on Thursday December 5, 2024 from 7-9pm". Haven't the book release events normally been the 2nd day? I'd hate to miss that part of it. Also, do we have any details on how this one will differ from past Dragonsteel conferences (Dragonsteel nexi, nexuses, nexus?) since it is going to be 1 day longer?

See you in December!

I'm pretty sure Brandon said it was named after a place in the Cosmere, which I actually found on a map in Rhythm of War: The Nexus of Imagination. Beyond that, I dunno much about the specific details of the actual convention either.

*I think the Nexus was actually the Silverlight Nexus he mentioned in a WOB somewhere.

WoB Referenced (Slight Spoiler):

Spoiler

Brandon Sanderson

We needed to come up with a name that is a little bit different than just Dragonsteel [for the convention], and we spent forever arguing. We finally landed on something; it does have Cosmere applications. We're just gonna call it Dragonsteel Nexus. There's no big convention named Nexus in fantasy/science fiction. We realized that, and it's also... (Secret!) It's the name of the perpendicularity at Silverlight; it's the Silverlight Nexus.

So is it Dragonsteel Nexus Convention or Dragonsteel Nexus? I think he's saying it's the latter, but it is still a convention named Dragonsteel Nexus.

If they didn't like Dragonsteel Convention I don't think they solved anything with this.  It's still the name of the company and then a name for a place where things/people meet. They just made it slightly unclear the nature of the thing by taking out Convention and putting in Nexus.

Whatever.

I think Brandon said you could call it whatever. Still, you are correct about the fact that it still doesn't exactly solve their problem lol.

I’m guessing that this year it will be Dragonsteel Nexus and slowly they will drop Dragonsteel and within 5 years everyone will just call the convention Nexus.

Just like when you get a new dog and you want to change its name from Spot to Duke. At first you call it Spot. Then you call it Spot-Duke. Then you slowly drop Spot and Duke sticks.
