Personally, I didn't enjoy the books as much as other people. I thought they were pretty good, as in the plot was interesting but the style was a little lacking. And the next two books went a little downhill...

On the other hand, I really enjoyed the movie. I found out from somewhere (I forgot where exactly) that Susan Collins had originally wanted to write the story as a screen-write, but those are hard to sell. I think the movie is one of the better book-to-movie adaptions I have seen...although I really haven't seen too many. I'm looking forward to how they handle the next two movies (if they will make them. Does anybody have news on this?).

Anyway, I was curious to see your reactions and thoughts.

Loved the book, and loved how they handled the adaptation. It was possible for them to have done better, but the changes they made were the right changes to make, and they handled a lot of the problems that develop from going from a first-person limited narrative to a third-person limited film.

Only issues I had... I felt the actress that played Katniss was a little too tall. Not too big, like some people had complained, as in too well-fed, too fit, but just too tall. And that wasn't nearly a big enough problem for me to dislike the movie.

My other issue was too much use of shaky-cam. It made my head hurt.

Ah, yeah, the shaky camera was annoying, especially when she was just walking around. You couldn't see the scenes as well because of that. But I really loved in the wasp scene. I think that was done really well. It's definitely one of my favorite scenes.

One of the things I was disappointed with was when she and Peeta were being presented to the capitol. I think they could--and should--have made the fire more dramatic. It seemed a little wimpy to me.

The wasp scene was great, although I admit I missed most of it when I got up to use the restroom. I'm gonna see it again on Saturday, though.

Agreed on the fire. It was great, and the part during the interview even better, but the initial presentation could have been flashier. I felt like they skipped over too much of the stuff that happened in the capital, although I understand why they did- they needed to get to the actual games faster than they book did.

I loved it as well. I think it's probably the best book to movie adaptation I've seen, at least in terms of sticking to the plot. That probably has something to do with the fact that Suzanne Collins is a producer. I agree that I was hoping for the fire to be a bit more dramatic, in the book they had headdresses and their whole bodies were covered in flames, and they were said to look otherworldly. It seemed to me you probably could have put them out with a bucket of water.

Other then that I had very few complaints. I liked how the commentary from Caesar the audience understand what Katniss was thinking, like about the mines. I also liked seeing Haymitch try to sell people on Katniss. I wish that District 11 had sent her the bread, but there was no set-up in the training facility, so it would have had less impact.

Now I see that some idiot is going off his rocker on Twitter because Cinna and Rue were black. I can't even believe it. If the person read the book, people from District 11 were described as darker skinned and Cinna's ethnicity was never mentioned. And even if it had been, I loved how those characters turned out, they looked better onscreen then they ever had in my head.

I thought it was a really good adaptation as well. Unlike most people I actually liked the shaky-cam, I thought that was a pretty good way to translate the 1st-person-present-tense narration of the book. One bit that especially stood out was when they boarded the train and the camera immediately flashed to all the food. The only part where I felt it was overdone was the hallucinations from the wasps.

I did feel that after they were out of the arena, the ending was a little rushed. I would have liked to see a bit more interaction between Katniss and Peeta after they were out, just to make it a bit clearer what was (or wasn't) going on between them.

I liked most of the costumes, except I wasn't a huge fan of her interview dress--other than the fire, it looked much too modern of a style, like the costumers were making her look good for the movie audience rather than for the capitol. And I don't think it should have been on fire, that was more of a spectacle for the parade and it makes it seem like Cinna's only got one trick up his sleeve. The fire outfits for the parade were okay, I liked the design of the black outfits but I agree, the fire itself wasn't impressive enough.

My favorite thing about the movie is how they managed to portray Katniss's viewpoint. Her thoughts and emotions come through very clearly and strongly. And one of the tools they used to accomplish that was the shaky cam. So I actually enjoyed it this time. I usually do not.
