He smiled weakly at her, then started walking to the other side of camp. There, he helped her down to the ground, sitting with his shoulder against hers. He sighed softly, his legs starting to shake too. Why was he so scared?

Because if Jenny left him, not only would his happiness be gone, but also his only usefulness.

Now Ed’s legs were shaking. Jenny was getting very worried. He had started to seem like he was getting his energy back. What was wrong?

”What did you need to tell me?”

She glanced back at where they had been sitting. She was glad they were out of earshot.

”Did Roy hurt you?”

She had some very not-nice things to say about him if that was the case.

He shook his head. “He didn’t hurt me. It’s a lot…stupider than anything like that.” He gave a halfhearted laugh. “I think Roy might have a crush on you.”

Ed was laughing. Surely that meant he was joking. A weird time to be joking, but he likely was trying to lighten the mood. That was a good sign.

”Ha ha, funny joke. But seriously, what did you need to tell me?”

Thankfully it seemed like Roy hadn’t hurt Ed. He would’ve probably told her immediately if that was what had happened.

His smile, halfhearted though it was, disappeared from j his grace immediately. “I’m not joking, Jen. And it makes sense, with how  he’s been acting.”

A look of absolute horror slowly dawned on Jenny’s face. Ed wasn’t joking.

”Oh. Oh no.”

She didn’t understand this at all. Roy had literally impaled her about thirty minutes ago. But Ed didn’t lie, and he could read body language better than she could. And Roy had been acting weirdly nice to her. She had no idea what to do.

He looked down and retracted his hands, putting them by his side. “It’s ok.”

“I don’t know what to do. Should I be extra mean to him, try to drive him off? Just not talk to him? Straight up tell him I’m not interested? Oh gosh, this is so weird…”

Jenny had now put both hands on her head and was freaking out. Why did the person she hated most in the world like her? He said he hated her. Maybe he just liked how she looked. She wasn’t sure if that was worse or not. It was certainly creepier.

Edgar looked up at her. Did she not like Roy back? It made sense that she wouldn’t…but he’d been so worried. After all, logically Roy was the better choice. He smiled.

”I don’t know, I’ve never had that problem.”

“Maybe if I just if ignore it he’ll lose interest. I can pretend I don’t know. There’s no way he’d actually admit it to me, right?”

Jenny was far too panicked to notice Ed’s smile. She was very much not smiling herself. Her head was hurting again, but now for a completely understandable reason.

“I don’t think he would…he’s too scared of you,” Edgar said, putting his arm around her again. She wasn’t going to leave him.

“You know…this could be a very funny way to get back at him…”

 “…how?”

Jenny’s intrigue at Ed’s idea cut through some of her panic. Most of it still remained, but she was no longer on the edge of hyperventilating. Maybe getting back at Roy could help drive him away. She desperately hoped it would. Things would become very, very awkward otherwise.

“I don’t know…reject him in front of everyone? That might be funny? Or we could just not, tell him by ourselves. I don’t have to be there if you don’t want me to.”

But if he wasn’t there…well, he needed to be able to help Jenny in more than just fights.

“I think Roy already knows that I hate him.”

The idea of telling Roy felt incredibly awkward. She’d probably manage to also embarrass herself.

”I’d rather try and keep him being nice to me, too. It makes a lot of things easier. I really don’t want him to try and impale me again.”

Jenny had learned that she very much did not enjoy being impaled.

“Yeah, I guess. Though I am worried, he threatened me again while you were asleep, and kept mentioning he only protected you because he needs you for his plans…I don’t like the sound of that. It doesn’t follow the other ways he acted though. Not being impaled would be good.”

He hoped that Roy would lose interest quickly.

“That doesn’t make much sense. Why would he say that about me if he liked me? Maybe he doesn’t like me as a person, just how I look.”

Jenny had decided that Roy being attracted to only her looks was the worse option. It meant his tenuous politeness to her could easily disappear if she got disfigured in battle or her hair looked really bad. It also just weirded her out.

”I need to figure out how to be nice enough that he doesn’t take his anger out on you but not nice enough that he takes it the wrong way. I’m the absolute worst person for this.”

“Maybe…it would make sense, with how he is.” He squeezed her hand gently. “You can do it, I know you can. Just keep being yourself, and if he gets mad at me for some reason…well, I’ll be ok.”

Both of them had come very close to never being ok again because of Roy. Ed probably didn’t need to hear that right then, however, so Jenny just squeezed his hand back. She relaxed a bit and started leaning against him more, glancing over her shoulder at where the others were.

”I don’t really want to go back there right now.”

Jenny didn’t trust herself to not immediately make a fool of herself by acting strangely in front of Roy. She needed to cool down for a bit, first.

“I don’t either.” He put an arm around her waist, letting her head rest against his shoulder. “In fact, I think I’d like to stay like this for a long time, as long as you’re here with me.” He smiled at her, his earlier anxiety completely gone.

Jenny smiled back and snuggled closer. She didn’t want to fall asleep in the slightest. She wished that they could stay in that moment forever, or at least without the pressure of the quest weighing on them. Hopefully they’d both survive the quest. Jenny managed to hide her anxiety about that, not wanting to ruin the moment.

Edgar laid his head on hers again, leaning against her. This was right. This was how things should be. Roy could never understand Jenny like he did. And no one, not even Kylee, had understood Edgar like she did.

After a while, Jenny decided that she should practice using her powers. If she was careful, she wouldn’t tire herself out. Necromancy didn’t strain her at all. She didn’t want to quit sitting with Ed, so she decided on Cryokinesis. Jenny had managed to use it a bit during the fight with Roy.

She placed one of her hands on the ground in front of them. Closing her eyes, she imagined its heat. The warmth held in the soil, remains of what sunshine left in its wake. She tried to pull it away, steal it for herself. Jenny warmed slightly, but that warmth dissipated quickly. The ground surrounding her hand now had a thin layer of frost from the nearby air also losing heat. It wasn’t much and would likely not have any practical usage, but it was something. It was also rather pretty looking.

Edgar shivered a little. Why had it gotten so cold? Her looked down, seeing frost covering the grass. “Was that you?”

“Oh, sorry! That was me.”

Jenny felt terrible, Ed was shivering. She hadn’t thought through this very well. Jenny could only lower temperature, not raise it. Her siblings had made craters that shot up fire before, but that wouldn’t be helpful here. She wrapped her arms around Ed and tried to give him a big hug to warm him up. She herself wasn’t cold, perhaps slightly warmer than usual.

”Is this helping?”

He hugged her back, smiling. “You’re fine, it’s ok. But…this is helping. In more ways than one.” He looked into her eyes. In them, he thought he could see why some people anticipated entrance to the underworld. Elysium…he could see it there.
