"Um, sorry to interrupt what was happening" his cheeks flush a bit, and he turns red. "I was wondering if I could look at one of those flowers, I have never seen one like it.." He peers at the flower held in Edgars hand.

The smell was horrific, but that normally meant something could be done with them, as his mother always said, 'The worse the medicine tastes, the better it is for you". He glances at it once again before adding a small "Please" onto his earlier request.

She was smiling back. Well, it seemed more like a half-smile, but that was better. “I will…I really don’t trust him. I wonder if there’d be a way to get him off this quest. Not killing him, another way,” he whispered back. She looked like she’d been having a rough time too…he’d made that so much worse for her.

“I’m so sorry Jenny.”

If your brain could catch on fire and send all coherent thoughts jumping out of the windows, then that was what was happening to Jenny. She didn’t understand. Sorry? Why was he sorry? Why was Edgar always sorry?

People say sorry when they do something bad, Jenny. He’s doing something bad.

”I don’t know why you’re apologizing. Please tell me what’s going on.”

Jenny was getting desperate. If he was apologizing, then that meant she hadn’t done something wrong. What had Edgar done? Why was he always sorry?

She didn’t notice Aaron speaking.

Sorry Scars, Jenny is just losing it right now.

Edit: I got ninja’d, sorry she ended up ignoring you twice.

Edgar put his in his pocket immediately. “No.”

He laughed, a brutally, terrifyingly honest laugh. “There’s a lot of things,” he said, quiet enough that no one else could hear. “But right now I’m especially sorry for who I am, and for making you hurt because of it.”

“But you aren’t doing anything! I like who you are! You make me happy. Happier than I’ve been for a long time. I don’t understand…”

Jenny was just so confused. Why did Edgar laugh? Did he think it was funny? Had she missed a joke? How did he think he was hurting her? By existing, somehow?

What did he mean by ‘a lot of things’?

She liked who he was? No…that wasn’t possible. She only liked who she thought he was. “I…I don’t really understand either. But I do have a lot of reasons to be sorry. I’m just surprised you haven’t found them out yet.”

That’s exactly what he thinks.

The thoughts trying to flee out of the windows had now also caught on fire.

He’s admitting it, Jenny. He isn’t telling you what he is doing wrong on purpose. He wants to hurt you. Why would you ever think someone would like you?

Jenny felt trapped. She was stuck in the limo and couldn’t escape. But she didn’t want to abandon Edgar, did she? He’d been nice to her. Maybe he was just confused.

He’s calling you stupid, Jenny. Too stupid to notice all of the terrible things he’s been doing.

”Edgar, please just tell me. I don’t understand this. I’ve never been able to understand anything like this. I can’t see what other people feel, what they really mean. I’m blind to it.”

He’s forcing you to admit that in front of everyone else. He’s playing you, Jenny.

“Do you really want to know?” He laughed again, a cold, uncaring laugh. He didn’t care if everyone heard, it was best they found out now. “I’m bad with people, that much is obvious. I’m a disappointment to my father and siblings. The people closest to me get hurt. I’m not dependable.” He pointed to Roy. “He’ll tell you that much. I didn’t abandon Kylee, but I didn’t save her either. Do you want more?”

Jenny wilted, looking downwards.

”Edgar, you’re describing me.”

He stopped abruptly. He hadn’t thought about that but…well maybe there was a reason they’d gotten along so well. And now he was ruining it.

”I disagree. I think you’re amazing with people, or at least with me. You’ve shone more kindness in two days than anyone had for a year.”

“You’ve shown me more kindness than anyone has for eleven years. Edgar, I’m just you but worse.”

Jenny felt sick. Edgar thought she was a terrible, worthless person who had to apologize for existing. He left Kylee to die. Jenny had done the deed herself. He was bad with people. She couldn’t understand if someone was yelling at her or praising her. He was a disappointment to his father. Her father hated her.

The voice was right. Edgar only pitied her.

Edgar was being a liar. She stared at him. Her eyes were angry.

”Don’t pity me.”

“Why do you hate yourself so much, then? It doesn’t make sense. I don’t- I-“

Jenny’s voice had started shaking enough that she couldn’t speak anymore. She buried her face in her hands. The thoughts that had caught fire were now nothing more than ashes. Her brain shut down. She stayed like that for a few moments. When she looked up again, her eyes were glassy.

Edgar looked down. This was why he hated himself most of all. He did this to people. He reached into his pocket, feeling the flower. Should he eat it? He should. Then he looked at Jenny again. No…no, she needed him. Putting an arm around her had helped before, right? He did it again, slowly raising his arm and putting it around her shoulders.

Jenny drifted. She felt separate from her body, from everything. It wasn’t good or bad. It just was. But she knew she was missing something. It nagged at her. That hadn’t happened when she drifted before.

There was a flash of recognition in her blank eyes when Edgar put his arm around her shoulders. It was the only thing tethering her to reality. She focused on it. It was like her thoughts were fighting through a sandstorm. She couldn’t see, so she went in the direction of Edgar’s presence.

The glass shattered, and she was back in reality. Jenny started crying. She managed to keep it silent- she had lots of practice with it. Jenny didn’t want to disturb the others too much. She suddenly felt like everything was too heavy, so she leaned against Edgar, tears streaming down her cheeks. She shook slightly from the muted sobs.

What have I done this time? Edgar thought. She obviously didn’t want him close to her. He almost withdrew his arm, but hesitated. She was leaning against him, did she want to be near him? The glassy look was gone from her eyes, that was good, right?

Unsure of what else to do, he leaned back against her a little bit. “It’s ok now. Everything’s going to be ok,” he whispered.

Jenny eventually stopped shaking. She was ok. He was right. She was ok. Even though she was being a massive inconvenience, he still was helping her. You didn’t do that for someone you merely pitied. She wanted to apologize for that, and she suddenly understood Edgar. She whispered to him.

”Thank you. I understand now, I think. You aren’t fair to yourself.”

She turned so she was looking at Edgar.

“I’ve figured out part of why you make me happy. You’re like a mirror. We’re alike. I see me in you, and I like you. So it makes me like myself too.”

“Do you know what that means?” He asked her, whispering. “If we’re similar like that, you need to be more fair to yourself too. I’m glad I can help you like yourself more.”

He looked her right in the eyes. She was pretty, he hadn’t realized, or at least appreciated that before. Then he realized how awkward the situation was. He had his arm around her, and now he was thinking about how she looked? He’d barely known her a few days!

 He didn’t move his arm.

Edgar was listening to her. He was finally listening. She smiled. Hopefully he could see what she saw. A kind person who cared about others, who helped even when he could be excused for doing nothing.

She liked how his arm felt around her shoulders. He was pretty handsome, too. His amber eyes were beautiful. It was unfortunate he probably wouldn’t feel the same way about her. Everyone else thought she was ugly, so he likely did as well.

She didn’t move anyways.

So does Edgar.

He smiled widely at her. She wasn’t moving, she wasn’t crying any more, she was still with him. This was good! He almost told her how pretty he thought she looked, but didn’t. He probably should have, but for some reason saying something like that scared him. So instead he just smiled at her.

Edgar was smiling. That was good. He wasn’t moving away from her, either. That was also good, if unexpected. It probably didn’t mean what she hoped it did, but it was nice anyways. She blushed a little bit despite herself. She internally kicked herself for that. It wouldn’t do any good to set herself up for rejection. Jenny didn’t want to make things awkward.

Was she…blushing? Was he making her uncomfortable? Should he move, did she want him to? She hadn’t moved away, but he couldn’t tell. Maybe she didn’t want to make him sad or something like that. Yeah, that was probably it. But he could ask her and find out.

He whispered softly. “Do you want me to move? I’m sorry if I’ve made you uncomfortable like this,” he said, moving his arm slightly, but keeping it around her shoulders.

“No.”

Jenny said that a little too quickly, which just made her blush more. She was gonna stub her toe from kicking herself at this rate. Edgar had asked if she wanted him to move. Did that mean he actually wanted to stay? She spiraled a little. Being unable to read people made situations like this incredibly difficult for her, although she hadn’t been in a situation like this before.
