These medallions seem to be a great way to get most of the Metallic arts without limitations Hemalurgy has like The Flaw. I just was thinking of a better way to make medallions, but for some reason hemalurgy is still useful in making it.

Back before the Final Ascension, if you had a full Feruchemist and a Mistborn, both with access and knowledge of all 16 metals, could they make medallions without the use of Hemalurgy?

Brandon Sanderson

If they knew what to do maybe. Much easier with Hemalurgy - but it would be possible.

And another one about some weird F-Nicrosil stuff

Questioner

So nicrosil.  Wax couldn’t use a blank gold metalmind because he’s not a gold ferring, why can he use a blank nicrosil metalmind?

Brandon Sanderson

So this will all come out eventually but the idea is there are certain ways to connect yourself to magic, to hack the magic and make it think you have the Spiritual DNA that you don’t actually have.  And this is one of the ways.

Questioner

So then the people who made this medallion have this thing that a regular nicrosil Ferring couldn’t--

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, you’re picking up on it. We’ll dig deeper into it as the series progresses.

How does the Malwish make an unsealed metalmind?(Excluding the Malwish workaround, how on Scadrial do they do this?)

A couple of questions first. If you burn a Nicrosilmind storing A-pewter and you burn the metalmind (you have a blank Identity, should be a good workaround for Identity stuff) do you permanently gain that power? Or does it run out eventually? Is the Hemalurgy to make an unkeyed metalmind, and is the medallion method a thing because Era 2 compounding is stupid difficult? If a few of these could be answered I might be able to think of a production process.

Well, Malwish don't have Allomancy giving metallions, and not every obvious Feruchemical power is used by Malwish. It seems there are limitations to medallions that we don't know about yet.

No. Just like in regular compounding, you get a surplus of attributes, in this case innate investiture which gives you A-pewter, that you can store in a metalmind again. The investiture in metalminds serves as a key to investiture coming from SR, telling it what power it should provide. You get more or less 10x the time what you've stored.

Medallions are different from metalminds. They have an identity of their own, a life force. They are a little bit alive, thus they likely form a connection/bond with you, which gives you the ability to draw from metalminds.

In Era 1, Sazed says the only thing you can Feruchemically store while sleeping is wakefulness, but in Era 2 they have the sky ships that require everyone to be storing weight to fly and they don't land while people sleep. Was Sazed just wrong, or is that a difference between normal Feruchemy and using the unsealed metalminds?

Brandon Sanderson

Unsealed metalminds, I am moving toward complete—you probably already guessed this—mechanical uses of Investiture, and this indeed is a step toward that. And so we are stepping toward having a little machine that gives you powers. That's what the world wants to try to find. And this is—this being mechanical—we'll just say that the medallions and the things that they're building have more of a life-force, more of an Identity of their own than a traditional metalmind does, even though they're unkeyed and all of this stuff.
