F-duralumin Preserving Cognitive Shadows

As I understand it, the reason souls don't stick around after death for so long is due to a lack of viable Connections to the Realms. This can be negated as you could Invest yourself enough to give yourself some viable Connection (I think that's why the Investiture trick works anyway).

Does this mean that a Connector Ferring could tap enough Connection to an ally who died near them to act as a functional anchor to the Physical Realm, letting the deceased person's spirit persist longer than normal in the CR, perhaps even letting them endure as long as the Connection can be sustained (i.e., theoretically an indefinite length of time)?

Also, would all that Connection allow the deceased person to speak and interact with the living person?

Yumi spoilers;

Similar to how Yumi and Painter could interact and speak with each other despite sort of being Cognitive Shadows?

You'd probably need Compounding to make any of this work though, as I imagine you'd need a strong Connection.

That would be insufficient. Cognitive shadows are formed from infusion of large amount of Investiture to the cognitive/spiritual aspect, Connection alone is not enough.

So far every single example of CS involved either Shardic intervention (Fused, Heralds, Returned, Kelsier) to provide necessary Investiture and changes or Yumi spoilers

truly gigantic amount of Investiture in a person, like Yumi. Nightmares are more akin to Shades, and are sustained by Investiture from Father Machine.

Possible exception to this are Shades, however they are clearly not 'full' CS based on their behavior.

WoB on necessity of large amount of Investiture to remain as CS

Questioner

Because Zahel was especially Invested when he died, he became that other soul. Does that mean that Elend wasn't actually...?

Brandon Sanderson

Zahel is a special case. What happened with him is, on his planet, he was specifically chosen by the Shard to be Returned. That happens, you don't have to be specifically Invested for that. The god gives them that. Now, to become a Cognitive Shadow, which is what certain people in the cosmere are, you need a powerful amount, an enormous amount.

Questioner

So not the bead?

Brandon Sanderson

Not just being a Mistborn, not just... he wasn't even close to being where he needed to be, if you want to end up as a Cognitive Shadow. You need to do some special hoops. We're talking, drawing forth the power of a Shard, or being endowed with the power of a Shard, or a certain number of Breaths would do it. There is a threshold that you could get, you're gonna end up as a Cognitive Shadow.
