She shrugged. "I just . . . never saw much of a point. Seemed like a lot of work for something that was just going to die in a few years, anyway."

He hesitated, then told her that he had a friend that he tried to save from evil magic, but his friend died instead.

“That’s probably one of the more difficult aspects.” He pet Stea’s head. “Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about that.”

He advised that she makes sure Vey knows she appreciates him. He also told her not to apologize. It wasn’t her fault- if anyone’s it was his. He’d brought his friend to his sister hoping she could help, but instead of removing his friend’s taint it led to his friend’s death.

Eventually Trevor became visible. He watched the dance with a distant expression on his face… at least for a bird.
