Just now, Edema Rue said:

Rue blinked. “That’s…hard to believe.”

Lerac shrugged. "I assure you it's true. Like I said, one of my reasons for being here was to check in on TAAron. Generally, those who have died and are revived end up... rather scarred. I'd guess his well-being is connected to this amnesia."

Rue frowned. “Prove it.”

"How do you expect me to do that?"

Rue shrugged. “If it’s true, I expect you can come up with something.”

"Anything I could do would most likely be able to be disregarded as an illusion."

“Then maybe you ought to leave before someone gets hurt. TAAron doesn’t need your ‘checkup’.”

"Who is it that would get hurt, exactly?"

Rue paused, seeming to rethink her words. “I suppose you’re probably immune to most magics, aren’t you?”

"I can tell you that trying to fight me would be... inadvisable."

“Mm…yes, I suppose reaping souls isn’t a problem for you.”

"I do not kill indiscriminately. I wouldn't kill you, if you fought me."

“Lovely,” Rue murmured. Then, to TAAron, “is there any truth to what he’s saying?”

"I... have no idea. I don't think it's a good idea to try and fight him, though."

Lerac looked distracted by something.

“I’m not that dumb,” Rue said, watching Lerac.

Lerac began to speak softly. It didn't seem to be directed at them. "I'd rather not... Really?"

“We should get out of here,” Rue whispered to TAAron. “I have a feeling this won’t end well for us.”

TAAron had gone still. Unnaturally so.

Lerac addressed Rue. "I'm afraid circumstances have changed. I will have to take TAAron now."

Pic began tossing the now crystalline Oath Rod like a baton, pulls up a chair, and sits on it backward.

“I’m afraid I can’t accept that,” Rue said flatly. “You will have to leave now.”

"You will have to accept it." Rue caught a glimpse of Lerac's face. It was quite young, likely not much older than TAAron. His expression was grim.

“Do you accept it?”

Rue frowned. “Unpleasant work.”

"Is that a yes or a no to an explanation?"

“Go ahead.” Inwardly, Rue felt a sense of panic, one that, try as she might, she couldn’t shove down.

Idiot. This is what comes from caring for others…and being too weak to save them.
