She shrugged. "I just . . . never saw much of a point. Seemed like a lot of work for something that was just going to die in a few years, anyway."

“I suppose. But they’re so sweet.”

She said that was very sad, and that she was sorry.

She shrugged again. "Maybe."

“That’s probably one of the more difficult aspects.” He pet Stea’s head. “Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about that.”

He advised that she makes sure Vey knows she appreciates him. He also told her not to apologize. It wasn’t her fault- if anyone’s it was his. He’d brought his friend to his sister hoping she could help, but instead of removing his friend’s taint it led to his friend’s death.

She looked alarmed. "You . . . won't live as long?"

"I'll still live to maybe seventy. But yeah." He shrugged. "I don't know if I'd want to get any older anyway."

"Oh."

That didn't seem so bad . . . she'd been thinking of a way smaller number.

"Yep. Absolutely worth it."

Stea twittered.

"Because I have a best friend." He pet her. "And I can heal people, run faster, jump higher, break stuff... all sorts of things."

"You can . . . do all that because of her?"

He nodded. "She can do the same. And she has a far higher measure of intellect than regular birds."

Stea hopped onto her shoulder and twittered again.

She shied away from Stea slightly.

Stea twittered, nibbled her hair, and hopped back to Vey.
