Looking For a Book

Looking for a book for a friend. The way he described it to me, the man character covered is covered in magic runes. Main female character paints runes for people in the town to hang for protection. Later in the books the characters remake town roads and borders so the town itself is a giant rune. (Sounds like Elantris, but that wasn't it.)

It didn't sound familiar to me so I thought I would check the collective knowledge of this group.

The Painted Man  (The Warded Man in the US?) by Peter V. Brett, first book of the Demon Cycle. If there were demons in this book then that's likely it.
