Solomon Grundy
Hello folks, I'm working on a tattoo design for myself, and I wanted to use as authentic as possible glyphs or writing from the Stormlight series to create the first ideal of the Radiants into "words": "Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination." I looked briefly through the wiki pages on glyphs and such, but don't believe it has what I'm looking for. Your help would be appreciated... Argent he/him
There are three writing systems we know of currently, and only one of them will do the job for you - the Alethi women's script. It's possible that the Thaylen script is complete enough, but it doesn't look as good anyway. If you were looking for glyphs specifically, such as these ones, they are not intended to write sentences with - they represent names and singular concepts for the most part, and our knowledge of them is far from complete. Refer to this thread for details and what we do and don't know. Edited July 3, 2014 by Argent
Solomon Grundy
cool, thanks. I kinda knew that glyphs weren't the way to go, but I was unclear what else "official" was out there.
Swimmingly he/him
By book 10, there'll probably be enough glyphs out there to cobble something like that together, but I agree that the woman's script is the way to go. Thayleneh is more blocky and rune-looking, but less complete - it's a matter of preference.
Solomon Grundy
Something I just thought: I noticed that on the glyphs page there are glyphs created/translated for the various order of Radiants. Seeing as how the first ideal is common to all orders, and the only one to be so, is it possible that the glyphs themselves contain the first ideal in each of them as part of the glyph? (mostly just thinking out loud here)... Edited July 3, 2014 by Solomon Grundy
Argent he/him
It's possible, but they even with the insane level of detail each glyph has, it's not enough for all the Ideals. Plus, Brandon doesn't know them all yet, in their exact form, and from what we understand about glyphpairs, they require at least some detail.
Joe ST he/him
it would be great if someone would compile some of the available info on writing on Roshar onto the various coppermind articles, we're currently really lacking in this stuff that would be great
Solomon Grundy
So I took my first stab at the Alethi script portion of this, and to do what I want with it, I'll need to alter my design slightly it seems. Originally, I was going to put the script inside a two-sided arrow, on the inside of my forearm. At one "tip" of the arrow I was going to have clouds in a clear sky, at the other "tip" I was going to have black storm clouds with red lightning and the script running between the two. Seems I might have to alter this to have just the script in the arrow, with the sky motifs around the arrow as more of a full sleeve design. I thought about placing the three components of the First Ideal one on top of each other, but I believe that will make the arrow too thick... Thoughts?
