“I made it quite clear that there was a half-and-half chance of getting exploded. You were all for it.”

"You basically coerced us to go to that portal! And how did you even know it exisited? And why have you been keeping secrets when everyone else has been transparent? If I didn't know any better, I would think you were working with the beorin!"

“I doubt that will be the case.”

I was thinking Variance and Allera were out of earshot (mostly because Allera wouldn’t have shared that much if everyone else was there)

"You won't have to. I'm sure we're going to need all the help we can get for whatever's coming."

“Yeah.”

“I haven’t been keeping secrets. There’s… a lot to tell.”

“Variance.” Allera blushed. “I…”

"Then start explaining. How did you know about the portal, and how did you know about the Beorin in the other universe?"

[Strohger hates Aiya since she was the one who dragged him into all this]

"...Okay. You just shared a lot, you don't need to say anything else if you don't want to."

Allera didn’t trust themself to say anything else, so they just nodded.

Variance continued to stand by them, silent, watching the others talk. He focused carefully to keep him form from blurring at the edges. This was taking a while.

"Would you believe me if I said the thing that traced the portal was in that Semirealm that Beorin now has access to?"

"No. I want a better answer. How do you know everything about the Beorin? What is a semi-realm? Why did you team up with Allera in the first place?"

[Eh it doesn't sound good enough. Strohger got here by doing some Telluric rending so...]

"Answer one: I grew up under Beorin rule. I don't know if it was this universe or some other universe or even what planet I was on. I joined a resistance and met some wizards and almost liberated my home city but then they just invaded it again. Turns out it's impossible to take them down by force, so instead my friends and I spent years studying Beorin protocols and codes and tracking wherever they are... and turns out they have access to far more forms of power than you could count."

"Semirealm's just a pocket dimension. One power among millions." Ayia shrugged. "It's nothing special. As for how I stumbled across Al over there... it's sort of a long story, but the gist of it is that I got ripped out of my last mission and thrown into this universe somewhat unceremoniously. We wound up teaming up upon finding Variance, fought a few guys, and then you showed up. It's... honestly, it hasn't been that long, all things considered. But a lot has happened."

"And what was that misson before you met Allera? And why do you care so much about the beorin If you can't defeat them?"

"Mission is classified, and I mean that. All I can say is that it was another job to destabilize the Beorin imperial machine, and that we're still doing it because we might as flipping well."

"And are we part of that mission? And why can't you move on with your life?"

"You are not, in fact, a part of the mission. I suppose you could be if you really wanted to, but that would take a little more spine than you seem to have."

"A little more spine! What do you mean? BY NIHL'S END, YOU THINK YOU'RE STRONGER THAN ME!?"
