Oh right

I was thinking mystery woman would appear right then, since Kerin is gone

Oh.

A woman appeared suddenly in the corner behind Variance, with a gray cloak and a grim look on her face. She held a dagger with a blade that was so bright that it was nearly impossible to look at, but that didn't cast any light at all. She lunged at Variance, plunging the blade down towards into his back before anyone had time to react. He froze, and his form began to fuzz at the edges.

In an instant Ayia snapped a metal quarterstaff into existence, spinning it over her head to build up momentum before sending it whistling at the assailant's head.

Allera stood frozen for a moment, then blasted a jet of flame at the woman’s chest.

The woman ducked easily. Ayia and Allera immediately began to dizzy and disoriented, their vision spinning.

She lurched to the side as fast as she could. It seemed like the flames grazed her, but there was no visible harm.

Allera lunged for the woman, angling their palm towards her, then let loose another blast.

Note that it would be much, much harder to do stuff like that given how disoriented they are.

This time, as she moved, she kept Variance in the line of fire. He took the brunt of the blast, severely burned, though until now he had been incorporeal.

“Hells!” Allera’s eyes widened, and they stepped back, breathing hard.

Also, they like haven’t fought anyone in like two years.

It should be noted that Ayia is wickedly fast. Like... probably killed gods in the past kind of fast.

Though I doubt she'd go all-out right now

Honestly, she hadn't expected her first attack to miss - suddenly, her stave was headed right at Variance.

Well that's not good.

Ayia Stabalized her staff, then heaved herself through the air across it to send a flying kick at her.

This assassin has some limited atium-esque abilities. But also, not everything that appears to be happening in this fight is happening.

She managed to block the kick. Ayia's world seemed to tumble and spin.

That's a little weird.

Vision and balance, mostly. It's been affecting them throughout the fight.

Variance looked blurry. He began disintegrating into floating points.

"He must die!" the woman growled. Her grim determination had shifted to fury.

Allera snapped out of it. Brute force wasn’t going to work, then. Maybe… They jumped in front of Variance, cawing.

Is that trying to get him to "snap out of it" or something? Also, brute force absolutely would work, but they don't know that.

Nothing much happened. The woman twisted the blade.

Allera spread their wings and blew a huge jet of fire at the assassin and away from Variance.

The woman is basically holding Variance to her, so especially with the impaired aim that comes from the dizziness and such, Allera couldn't reasonably aim away from Variance.

Simultaneously, Ayia twirled overtop her staff to bring a massive kick down on the woman's head.

Even when dizzy and off-balance?

She avoided him as much as possible, but it hit her in the shoulder. Still, she seemed strangely uninjured.

Oh, okay. I thought there was enough room between them for Allera to squeeze in.

Let’s say Allera still does that. See what happens.

Again, the woman moved and Variance took most of the impact. He seemed to be consumed by the flames.

Then, the dizziness stopped. Variance went back to looking uninjured, though still blurry and frozen. And the assassin was lying dead on the floor, bludgeoned and on fire. The smell of burning flesh hit the pair suddenly. The chaos of the fight turned to an uneasy stillness.

Allera’s beak turned up. “That’s what I thought.”
