I am curious to interactions of Shardblades and Lifeless. I can think of 4 scenarios.

1. Somebody is cut through the arm with a Shardblades. The arm is rendered useless and they then die naturally. If they are turned into Lifeless, do they have control over the arm?

2. Somebody is stabbed through the chest with a Shardblades, severing the spinal column. Can the be made Lifeless, and if so, what happens?

3. A Lifeless is sliced through the arm with a Shardblades, do they lose control of the limb, is the Breath somehow shrunk?

4. A Lifeless is stabbed through the chest with a Shardblade. The spinal column is severed. What would happen to the Lifeless. Would the Breath be released; would they ignore it?

Shardblade cuts the current soul of a living person, Breath replaces the now missing soul of the body with itself in Lifeless. Lifeless will be fine. Mostly. There would be very minor side-effects, that's it:

Spoiler

little wilson

Can a Shardblade-killed body be turned into a Lifeless?

Brandon Sanderson

Can a Shardblade-killed body be turned into a Lifeless.  Yeees, it can be re-Invested. Yes.

little wilson

Are there any side-effects to doing so?

Brandon Sanderson

Uhhh, there would be side-effects. I won't tell you what they are. They would be minor, minor, mostly inconsequential side-effects.

Yup, see the WoBs above.

Yes, they will lose control over the cut off limb. Breath replaces the soul, Breath is now cut in two pieces, it's still in the arm, but is unconnected to the bigger piece, making it dead. Just like in the case of a living person.

That's a good one. I don't know. Breaths are more sticky in the Physical Realm, a Shardblade cut through the spine might not sever the Breath from the Physical Realm, as it already exist largely in it, stuck here. I don't know.

Adding one more thing, a Lifeless that is more invested than with a single Breath, let's say 50 Breaths, or something like a Kalad Phantom, would resist a Shardblade cut to some degree (Vasher's Awakened straw man was invested with around 25 Breaths iirc):

Questioner

Shardblades cut organic and inorganic matter differently. How would they interact with an animated construct like an Awakened straw man? What about a Lifeless?

Brandon Sanderson

So I walk kind of a fine line here. Something that's animated as a construct, like an Awakened straw man, is likely going to block the Shardblade to some extent, as powerful Investiture would. A Lifeless is probably just gonna act like it was a living being.
