Two minutes later, the mauraders had smashed open the belltower's front gate and begun to climb the stairwell. A good minute or so remained before what looked to be almost a dozen full-grown men with honest-to-Icona war paint and iron weapons. Swords, axes, spears: actual, bona fide implements of death.

Ahnalyn gripped her comparably tiny blade nervously, crouching into an old fighting stance she'd taught herself years ago and deciding to hang back behind the slightly less inexperienced-looking individuals.

Oh. It's real now. Val glanced behind her, and, seeing Ahnalyn cowering in the back, decided to do the arguably smart thing and join her.

"I never really...fought back home. Pretty much just played with a knife. I am quite curious of these folks' motivations and political views, though..." Xe peeked through a gap between some people, hoping for another glance of the rebels. Right then, an axe swung right in front of her peephole, eliciting a scream from xer as she jumped back. "Notcuriousenoughtodienotcuriousenoughtodie." She cowered even further back, trying to make xerself as small as possible.

Itzal howled like a madman, his eyes alight with a joy. It was rare that he got to see fighting first hand, and he was pleased with his results.

His first stone took and advancing mercenary in the head, causing him to topple over. He would likely never be the same again, even if he survived. The common people underestimated the power a sling could provide, and it was much easier to learn than archery.

"You had best run little ones, while you still have lives to preserve!"

"...Me neither." Ahna looked somewhat perturbed by the other sprite's ruthlessness against the freelancers. "Maybe we could just leave it to that guy?"

Crowe adjusted his grip on his axe. If he did end up dying, at least he definitely wouldn't have to pay his tab at the tavern.

He moved in front of Ahna as she backed up, and swung at the nearest freelancer. She was the one with the money, so she was the one he was gonna protect, even if they hadn't reached an official agreement yet. The man fell, hopefully that would be enough to deter him. Crowe swung at the next one in line.

It's gonna be a long day, he thought to himself.

"Yeah we'll be fine, there's only like a couple hundred of them, and . . . uh five of us, that's pretty good odds . . ." Crowe said, realizing halfway through he was just making things worse.

Eceline swallowed nervously. “Yeah, yeah, um, you sure you don’t want to run?”

"I'd love to, but there's only one way out of this tower." Ahna glanced over her shoulder. "Unless you're into jumping from dozens of feet up."

Eceline hesitated. It wasn’t that high…and she’d climbed from higher… “I’ll go if you go.”

Eceline flinched, feeling a sudden anger. She shouldn’t need someone else’s protection. She should be able to fight. That was the whole reason she’d come here, wasn’t it? She needed to stop running and start fighting. She smiled back weakly. “Okay. Let’s do it.”

"Wait, what?" Val hissed. "You guys are gonna fightYou do realize you'll probably die, right?" She tried to hunker even further behind everyone else. "Better to just...hide and hope the others will deal with it."

"Trust me I would love to run and hide somewhere, but we're pretty much already in the thick of it," Crow said. He swung at another soldier as he came running towards their group, weapon raised.

The situation wasn't good, such a large group of enemies made it difficult for him to Sense anyone sneaking up on him.

Ahna handed her a knife. "Sorry. I... don't really have anything better than that."

Eceline accepted the knife.

She looked at Val hopefully. “We’d all be more likely to survive if we run. We could…we could rig up some sort of harness, find a way to get down?”

Val didn't respond. No, no escape, something like that would take too long and draw attention. Hide, just hide, the others will deal with most of them and if one of them finds me... She tightened her grip on her dagger. Well, I should be able to deal with that much.

Are they seriously talking about running again? Itzal thought, shoving the latest mercenary off of the railing, sending him to tumble down the entire tower, hitting the ground with a satisfying crunch.

This is literally the most advantageous position we could find ourselves in.

Itzal grabbed a spear from a fallen mercenary, and moved in front of the stairwell, the small entryway allowed only one of the mercenaries to fight him at once, and after they had just climbed the stairs under a hail of his sling stones, their morale was already low.

Itzal grinned as the mercenary at the top of the stairs hesitated, a short ugly little guy, who was almost immediately pushed onto Itzal's spear by the mercenary behind him.

Is he seriously still fighting? This is literally the least advantageous position we could find ourselves in.

"I doubt it. The ground down there is swimming with these freelancers." Ahna held her shortblade tightly, glancing at the shade and the sprite in turn. "Uh, if you haven't ever fought with a knife before... keep a low stance, like what I'm doing. Get your weight to sit on both your legs about equally. If someone comes at you, worry about defense first and offense second: most of these guys should only have a couple attacks worked into their brains, so after you watch them slow down to follow-through, just sorta..."

One freelancer with a pike came rushing at her from the stairwell. All of a sudden she was painfully reminded of just how real the situation was, a spike of adrenaline bursting aflame within her and heating every inch of her body. Fortunately for her, he was pretty much set on just one direction, so she somewhat easily strafed alongside the pike and found herself right next to him.

Here comes the nasty part...

She was a bit slow on the uptake, but that was probably fine. This guy looked more shocked than anything right now. Ahnalyn grit her teeth and slashed out with her knife, cutting into his shoulder. The assailant let out a piercing shriek in reply, immediately dropping his pike and crumpling to his knees to cradle the wound.

"Just... um... shank 'em."

Eceline froze and started breathing rapidly. “I…I don’t like blood,” she finally squeaked out. She hopped nimbly backwards, breathing rapidly.
